We know as Christians, on an intellectual level, that we have idols—be it family, food, football or whatever. But to see the allure of idolatry can be hard for those of us in the Western world. That’s why I appreciate the points laid out by Doug Stuart in his Exodus commentary (450-54). Stuart suggests nine reasons idolatry was attractive to the Israelites and in the cultures of the Ancient Near East. 1. It was guaranteed. If you do the right incantation, you get the right results. Just say the right words and the gods show up. Who wouldn’t want that?...

My oldest son, Jake, taught Family Home Evening a couple of weeks ago. It all started with a simple experiment. I told Jake that if I poured oil on water it would float on top of the water. Then we went for the food coloring. Then it turned into a discussion, mostly his idea, that ended up being our lesson for FHE. He presented it all by himself. Here is how it went..... The water in the jar represents THE WORLD (meaning the things of this world, pride, basically the things that are not of the Lord). The Oil in the jar represents US. 1 John 2: 15-17: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. Romans 12:1-2: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. *What does "of the world" mean? *What can we do to "present [our] bodies a living sacrifice" to the Lord?" The food coloring (which was supposed to be red...but we were out) represents THE SINS OF THE WORLD. The oil repels the coloring and it passes straight through in droplets and then colors the water. The kids LOVED that part! It is pretty fun to watch! (Stir all together) Sometimes we sin and we become like the "world". Then we need to repent. (while everything starts to seperate again we read the scriptures below) John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his eonly begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting ilife. Isaiah 1:18: Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. (When it is all settled) Doctrine & Covenants 63:47: He that is faithful and endureth shall overcome the world. (Shine a Flashlight behind the jar. The lights won't cut through the bottom part but really lights up the oil.) Matthew 5:14: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. *How can we let our light shine so that it cannot be hid? 1 John 4:1-11: Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. I love that last scripture! I could read it over and over again! Jake did such a great job. Mallory was totally into the lesson. I would consider that a success! :)

This is a statement that is true. My morning prayer goes a little like this: "Thank you Jesus for waking me up this morning and seeing me through the night. Thank you for food on my table clothes on my back and a roof over my head. Thank you that your mercies are new every morning and that there is new hope in you. Lord help me to put on the full armor of God today and stand my ground against the enemy. The helmet of Salvation on my head to protect my thoughts. And Lord let me take every thought captive and bring it to you. The breastplate of righteousness on my chest; tucked into the belt of truth which is buckled around my waist. In my right hand, the sword of the Word to dig out the fiery arrows that miss and hit me. Psalm 139:23-24 NIV [23] Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. [24] See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 26:2-3 NIV [2] Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; [3] for I have always been mindful of your unfailing love and have lived in reliance on your faithfulness. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. Courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. Matthew 6:9-13 NIrV [9] "This is how you should pray. " 'Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored. [10] May your kingdom come. May what you want to happen be done on earth as it is done in heaven. [11] Give us today our daily bread. [12] And forgive us our sins, just as we also have forgiven those who sin against us. [13] Keep us from sinning when we are tempted. Save us from the evil one.' All this I pray in Jesus name. Amen. Bonus: Psalm 141:3 NIV [3] Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R9_caMq_iYc https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uFdhw6h8D_w https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dfZ56EMq4Zg https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2nnIZDNy74A Hope this encourages you to be prayerful in the morning and throughout the day.
