Some say the Runes (a type of alphabet used by Germanic tribes for over a thousand years) were traditionally carved from sticks from the Rowan tree, with each letter of the alphabet being named for a different tree. An early name for the Rowan tree was "Luis," which is the second letter of the Rune alphabet. Celtic people that the Rowan tree could offer protection from evil spirits. The berries contain a high concentration of Vitamin C, a good preventative and treatment for scurvy. They also contain organic acids, tannins, sugars. The berries have been used to make general tonics for the body since the ripe berries are mildly purgative and diuretic. Rowan is helpful with clearing the mind and opening our inspiration. The Essence of Rowan is used in vibrational medicine to assist in attuning us to nature, broadening perspectives, and making room for a deeper understanding of our place here in the universe. It also has a significant role in protection. Rowan wood was traditionally used to make spindles and spinning wheels, tool handles, stakes and pegs, dowsing and divining rods. A rowan wand or walking stick will protect you from being harmed on a journey and bring spiritual enlightenment along your path. To the Celts the Rowan was a symbol of the hidden mysteries of nature and the quickening of the life force. Scottish tradition did not allow for the use of Rowan wood for any other purpose than ritual. (it is traditional to use oak, willow, or ash wood) 2.Ask the tree for Permission if you can use one of its branches for a wand. Meditate a while to receive an answer. If you feel guilt, the tree said 'No'. You must find another tree. If not, it said 'Yes'. 3.Carefully cut a sturdy branch using a sharp knife, bollines are traditional. Make sure to make a clean, straight cut Tip. Rub Wax to prevent insects from harming the Tree 4.Thank the Tree Add an offering such as cornmeal, fruit, or just water. 5.Sand of the bark, leaves, and stubs, to get a smooth surface all around. 6.Use a sharp knife to whittle a handle. This can be elaborate designs, or simply a straight line. 7.Carve runes into the wand, saying the properties of the rune as you sketch it. At this point carve any sigils into the wood that you require. Plan a design – make it realistic to make sure you can follow it through. Don’t change your mind halfway, as you need to embody the wand with the concept that what you will DOES come to pass, including the design you planned! 8.Put a Small Groove into the Tip of the Wand and Add a pointed crystal at the tip, gluing it down using super glue. Quartz works best 9.Glue on one of your hairs to the wand's tip to infuse your power in it. 10.Now, the rest is optional...Some paint their wands, add clay, yarn, or ribbon. You may also add a copper wire loop to add additional charms and talismans to the wand. It is also wonderful to add bits of nature, such as shells, moss, dried flowers, leaves, seeds, nuts, etc. All things in nature have magickal energy. The wand you make will always help you in very special ways Tips Add Runes here is a list here or add other symbols that you wish Blessing the wand after creating it is important, this can be done by sprinkling Blessed water on the wand under the light of a full moon. Then letting it soak in the moonlight for a few hours. Wrap the wand to prevent any damage that can possibly hurt it. If you have any pets, add their fur or feathers to the wand, infusing it with the animal's energy. Varnish with transparent varnish. You can also use Bone or Deer Antler as well

I got several comments that my new Kraken Staff looked a lot like my Elvish Staff. I might see their point, but when you hold them together I hope you see the difference. The method I used is very similar to how I made the first staff. The core of a roll of paper cloth (yes I have many of those, because you never know when you want to make a Gatling gun) The tentacles here are made with strips of foam mat covered in aluminum foil, to help keep it in shape. Then you glue them to the staff. This time I wanted a larger orb with more lights. And I am looking for an easy way all the time. So I used a Christmas orb with integrated light that runs on batteries. The battery pack I hid inside the staff core with the switch reachable. The orb was frosted with a thin layer of white spray paint. Test assembly with orb With the orb glued in place I covered all the tentacles with paper clay. For the staff I did not use cheerios, but every sucker is hand sculpted. The painting For the Elvish staff I used a technique where I first paint a light color and then smear a darker color over which sets in the creases, called weathering. The the Goddess Staff I use a little different technique. I first painted the tentacles a lighter orange/brown color. Then I used a sponge to add and feather a darker brown on all the "highest" ridges of the tentacles. The suckers were painted lighter orange/pink with feathered edges to the main color. Shadows and depth were added with darker colors in and around the suckers. The tentacles were blended in with the rest of the staff using a sponge and the weathering technique. I wanted the rest of the staff to have a colder, rock quality, so the tentacles would really stand out. Even more details. Down the length of the staff I added several details. Like Balanidae and sea stars which I made out of clay, and different sea weed made out of hot glue. Summoning Kraken Photo by: Nils Katla Photography

Seasoned potters will look at this gathering of bits and bobs and cringe... but I am rather proud of this lot. Unsightly as it may be ;) I've been playing with clay and trying my hand at pit firing. Pit firing is a primitive method of firing clay/pottery. I've still got a long way to go but it's been fun and I'm really looking forward learning more and creating better pieces. I don't expect to be making any vases, cups or teacups (pottery is incredibly hard and a true skill!) but if I can manage a few rustic bits inspired by faerie folk I'll be pleased as punch. Pixie Hill has some of the nicest neighbours. A couple of weeks ago one of them dropped off a handful of wooden spoons for me to play with. Here's the results... Spoon wands of course! For those who are new to my blog... One day, quite a few years ago now, a lady wrote to me asking my witchy opinion of her child using a spoon as a wand. I told her children have the very best ideas and I thought it was brilliant. To stir magic with a lowly spoon, clockwise to bring good tidings, counter-clockwise for removing the unwanted... it makes perfect sense. So I've been making spoon wands ever since. Wands for making wishes, banishing monsters and bringing lovely dreams. Each one made with a purpose in mind. Here's a better look at one which is particularly good for gardeners, earth lovers and working magic barefoot in secret gardens. Lastly... I'm excited to retrieve the Pixie Hill faerie houses from "The Gates" this evening. I've missed them, and the place just doesn't seem right without them here. We'll be celebrating their homecoming by extending the studio hours this weekend. LABOUR DAY WEEKEND 'Welcome Home' Extended Hours Friday 1pm - 5pm Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4 pm If you'd like faerie mail waiting for you, please email [email protected] by THURSDAY at NOON with details.
