Marlene Dietrich and her turntable, 1956 Originally known as a phonograph (or gramophone), turntables have been around since 1877. I think it’s fair to say that many of us have fond memories of our first Fisher-Price record player, and that most of you who are reading this right now still probably own a turntable and a fat stack of records to boot. Billie Holiday, her boxer Mister and her turntable, 1945 I’m sure you’ve probably seen many photos of your favorite rock stars or celebrities posing with their prized record collections, or spinning said vinyl on a sweet portable turntable in a hotel room. That said, I’m going to hedge a bet that the vast majority of the photos in this post will be new to your eyes. From screen icons like Marlene Dietrich to musical chanteuse Billie Holiday, they all adored their turntables. And I’ve dug up photographic proof of this love affair that in some cases dates back all the way to 1925. I’ve done my best to attach dates to the images. The “good old days,” have never looked better. Enjoy! Jean Harlow in a shot from The Girl from Missouri, 1934 ...
c1520, Flemish? The three young ladies wear plain velvet kirtles. Their corsets or stays give a somewhat natural figure. The construction of the centre, brown velvet, gown is very interesting. It appears to be lined with red velvet (or satin?) but she could also be wearing another red gown underneath. The low bodice is laced at the front with a red lace. The hoods of this period are still low on the head with delicate jewelled decoration. The centre French hood, and the one on the left, show how the band of silk helped keep the hood in place before it developing into a thinner chinstrap. Their hair is crimped in the french style.

With their “Retrospect” DVD out in the US, Epica commemorate a decade of sweeping classical-influenced gothic and epic metal. We checked in with vocalist Simone Simons at home in Holland, where she’s busy caring for her new baby while working on lyrics for the next Epica album. Can you give us a brief overview of your musical background? I’ve been taking classical singing lessons since I was 17 and I also sang in the choir and played the flute. These were private lessons, I didn’t study at a conservatory. Since you’ve done some work with a live orchestra I’m wondering

These are my Women cellists playing their classical music together in complete serenity. 8 x 8 inch, acrylic on hardboard, it will need a frame to hang or put on a small easel to display. A little velcro too. Signed front and back.
