The Wizard of Oz Game Year: 1974 Players: 2-4 (For the purpose of this review, there were 2 players) Set Up Time: 1 minute Playing Time: Took us 15 minutes Object: Arrive "Home" with the Magic Card in hand. Review: + I love that the game features the whole plot of the movie in sections. If you'd never seen Wizard of Oz, you would still know all the major points from the movie to play the game. + You get to play as your favorite character. - Too many spaces on the board. In fact there are so many spaces on the board that one spaces says "Go back 15 spaces" which in normal games would pretty much takes you back to start but in this game takes you less than half a board back. - Aside from constantly "taking" or "giving back" the Magic Card (depending on which space you land), you pretty much are just flicking the spinner and racing to the finish line. Overall: This game took 15 minutes to play and was pretty much 15 minutes of boredom. Aside from the "go back (a certain number of spaces)", and the constant taking of the magic card and giving it back, there is not enough to keep players interested in playing. Oh, helloooooo again school! (And this blog, which I have neglected for a bit - Whoops!) Every year, I create a bulletin board right outside my classroom door with the kids' names on it. Last year, I did hot air balloons, but this year I wanted a brand-new idea! Even when things would be new for the kids, I am the type who likes to change things up to keep ME interested and invigorated! I turned to my studly husband for advice, and he suggested I do something based on his favorite movie, "The Wizard of Oz!" (I'm glad he didn't suggest his other favorite movie... "The Shining"....that would have been interesting... a little too interesting for me!). So next I turned to my other favorite place for ideas... Pinterest! I found a few cool ideas, and combined them into.........THIS! I ended up writing the first names of the kids on the yellow bricks! I went back and forth on what the title should be, and while "If I Only Had a Brain" (he he) was a close second (okay, not really!), I went with "There's No Place Like Fifth Grade." Aaannnnd.... I love it! What do you like to do for "Welcome" bullletin boards? Here's to a super year!

The bright western sun disappeared as the sky quickly darkened, and a low rumbling sound was heard in the humid air. There was a swift rushing of many feathered wings, yet not of bird. A great chattering and laughing filled the atmosphere and when the hot sun came out again, the light showed the Wicked Witch of the West that she was surrounded by a large crowd of wild monkeys, each with a pair of immense and powerful wings on his shoulders. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (book) (1900) The Winged Monk
Wizard of Oz - Math Problem Solving – Grades 4 & 5 WANT AN INTERESTING WAY TO GET YOUR STUDENTS INTRIGUED WITH MATH? Students are generally familiar with The Wizard of Oz movie, right? This leads to quick engagement with the original classic novel, upon which these math questions are based. As the students talk about the math and how to solve they also get caught up in the story and can’t wait to continue! You can put the problems on a white board and have the entire class work a problem at a time. I spend 30 minutes twice a week on these problems. I have them write with dry erase markers on their desks and walk around and give them feedback so they can be successful. These would also be great for a class or grade level theme based math competition. They can be used for RTI groups to build growth with your students. You can copy them and assign to students for a challenge or when they are “done.” They have been so excited about this series they have asked me to write more math problems with other novels. A GREAT WAY TO RAISE THEIR BENCHMARK SCORES, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY... THEY LEARN TO LOVE MATH! ________________________________________________________________ ► Overview ◄ Students who have a variety of skill levels can successfully work through these word problems. This unit should be a great resource for your 5th grade typical and reluctant learners in addition to 4th grade advanced learners. This unit is a set of 86 constructed-response problems that cover the entire story line of the "Wizard of Oz" through math problems. There is an answer key in the back of the unit. Your students can solve engaging, child-friendly problems as they are learning math. This theme based unit engages your students with the wonderful classic story while increasing their mathematical reasoning. ________________________________________________________________ ► Features & Skills ◄ ♥ These problems engage students' love of fantasy fiction literature. ♥ 86 constructed-response problems. ♥ Aligned to state and CCSS. ♥ Helps make sense of problems. ♥ Moves beyond memorizing procedures or merely working with numbers. ♥ Helps students conceptually understand math. ♥ Concepts & skills include adding, subtracting, multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; area, volume, elapsed time, logic, metric and standard measurement, unit rate, solving variable, probability, and combined skills. ________________________________________________________________ ► Here are just a few of the ways you might use the problems ◄ ♥ Use as a large group option.
