Our continuing Exploration through the Life of Jesus Has brought us to the time when Jesus is Preaching the Sermon on the Mount. We did a previous lesson on the Beatitudes, Letting Our Light Shine, The Golden Rule and now we are learning about THE WISE AND FOOLISH BUILDERS. . This is always a "fun" lesson to teach KIDDOS. They seem to really understand the point JESUS is making in the story. We added NEW CARDS to our DO You Know? Wall. My Expectation is for the KIDDOS to be able to answer each of these by the end of the lesson. Our VISUAL Aid for this lesson was an easy choice. I used rocks and sand for our foundations and placed a laminated paper house on each. During the lesson, when we got to the part of the storm, I poured water over both houses. As you can see the house on the sand fell. I ended up moving the visuals into a glass casserole dish...that way I could really pour a lot of water all over the houses and not worry about water getting all over the table. I did laminate my houses...so, I can reuse them in the future. It worked out perfectly. We had three new words to add to our WORD WALL. I chose STORM, BUILDER, & FOUNDATION. Those are important words for the KIDDOS to understand for this lesson to make more sense to them. We Added a NEW Card to our GOD'S AWESOME PLAN FOR MAN Timeline!! This is the SONG we learned with this lesson. The KIDDOS really enjoyed singing this one. I like that it teaches the message about WHO we need to build our life on!! The song can be heard by clicking the following link. The WISE BUILDER SONG....BY RONDA DUVALL Our MEMORY VERSE was Matthew 7:24! To hear the MEMORY VERSE song click on this link. Matthew 7:24 Memory Verse The Kiddo's made a "HOUSES BUILT ON A ROCK" for their TAKE-HOME project. I was excited for the KIDDOS to get to make this TAKE HOME project. It's a great visual reminder for BUILDING OUR LIFE ON THE LORD!! We want to be WISE BUILDERS! This week our REVIEW Game was a FUN one!! The KIDDOS had a paddle with both a well built house and a crumbling house on it. We would read a circumstance card to the KIDDOS...they would have to choose if the person on the card was building their life on JESUS or not. If the person on the card was building their life on JESUS, they would hold up the strongly built house. If they person was NOT building their life on JESUS, the KIDDOS would hold up the house that was crumbling and falling down. The KIDDOS did REALLY well with this game and enjoyed spinning their houses!! As you know, the second week of the LESSON is when we REVIEW. It gives me opportunity to correct any misunderstandings. It also, gives opportunities for the KIDDOS who missed class the first week to "CATCH UP." This is the Week we SAY our MEMORY VERSE from MEMORY and We do an ACTIVITY we add to our EXPLORER JOURNAL. This LESSON'S EXPLORER JOURNAL ACTIVITY was simple one...ON one side the page had a ROCK foundation that the KIDDOS added. On the other side the KIDDOS spread glue and added sand. Then the KIDDOS built a good strong house from nicely cut craft stick upon the ROCK and a HOUSE in pieces (I broke several craft sticks to give them the broken down look) upon the sand. The KIDDOS LOVED making this EXPLORER JOURNAL ACTIVITY. I am thoroughly enjoying teaching through the Life of Christ. The KIDDOS are learning so much about JESUS our LORD. Blessings, Ronda

Jesus tells the story contrasting the wise builder and the foolish at the conclusion of His Sermon on the Mount. He tells His hearers that if they hear His words, and do them they are like the wise man, but if they hear His words and do not do them they are like the foolish man. The lesson here is about obedience - so meaningful and relevant to preschoolers. Building your life on Jesus (which is often the lesson taught with this story) is an abstract concept for little ones, but obedience, and choosing whether to be wise or foolish is right up their alley for both understanding and application! Bible Truth: Jesus teaches me to be wise. Bible Story: The wise and foolish builders. Bible Study: Matthew 7:24-27 teach sensory storytelling For a great visual and sensory experience of this parable round up these items: Legos a clear shallow container sand a brick Velcro a hair dryer a spray bottle filled with water To prepare, build two Lego houses. Add a couple strips of Velcro to the bottom of the wise man's house, and the brick. It works best to build the foolish man's house a bit top and front heavy. I also left the back of the house exposed so that it will be easier to blow down when I tell the story. Fill the clear shallow container with sand. Hold your Bible open, and tell the children that this is an exciting story because it's a story that Jesus told his friends and people that wanted to follow Him. We want to follow Jesus so let's listen to this story! Jesus said that anyone who listens to His words, and obeys, is like a wise man who built his house on a rock. A storm with lots of rain and strong winds came, but the house built on the rock was strong. It stood firm. Invite the children to pat their legs to make the sound of rain. Spray the house with water, and then spray a mist over the children. Turn the blow dryer on to a cool setting, direct the air towards the house, and direct it to the children. (They will LOVE this!!) Then Jesus said that anyone who listens to His words, but does not obey, is like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. A storm with lots of rain and strong winds came, and the house on the sand came crashing down. Once again, invite the children to pat their legs to make the sound of rain. Spray the house, and a mist over the children. Turn the blow dryer on to a cool setting, direct the air towards the children., and then towards the house to blow it over. Ask the children, "Do you want to be like the wise man who built his house on the rock, or the foolish man who built his house on the sand? When we listen to our parents and teachers, and obey them by doing what they say, Jesus said we are like the wise man." sing Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock is the traditional children's song illustrating this parable. Before we sing the song I briefly explain that building your life on the Lord means to obey Jesus. play wise and foolish charades Play this game to teach and reinforce the practical application of this lesson. To prepare, use pictures (if they are available to you) of children being wise (i.e. sharing, helping, etc.) and pictures of children being foolish (i.e. fighting, stealing, etc.). If these pictures are not available to you, simply write the words on slips of paper. Put the pictures or words in a container from which the children will draw from. Also print out these happy and sad faces. Cut them out and glue a happy and sad face to either side of a craft stick for each child. Choose pairs of children to come to the front of the classroom and draw out a picture or word from the container. Help the children figure out what the picture is conveying, or what the word says, and help them act it out. Engage the rest of the class to help them guess what the children are doing. (If you are using pictures, you can also show them the picture.) After they determine the action of the children, ask them if the children are being wise or foolish. If they are being wise they should show you the happy side of their craft stick. If the children are being foolish, they should show you the sad side of their craft stick. craft coloring page Here is a coloring page for this lesson to which you may add sand, and rock as suggested in the craft below. rock painting Collect enough smooth rocks for each child in your class. Allow them to paint their rocks however they like. When they dry, write on the rocks with a Sharpie marker, "I am wise when I obey." wise & foolish builders For this craft you will need: this heading construction paper 6 craft sticks per child glue rock pattern contact paper (or gray / brown construction paper) craft sand (or sand / dirt) To prepare, print and cut the heading into strips, and cut the contact paper into approximately 1.5" by 5" rectangles. (I'm using the contact paper because I already have it on hand. If you opt to use construction paper, cut it to the same size, then crumple and flatten it out to give it a more "rock like" texture.) Since there is a lot to glue for this project, you may want to glue the headings to the construction paper ahead of time. In class, help the children glue the contact paper to the bottom left side of their paper, and sand to the bottom right side. Glue four craft sticks, in the shape of a house, on the rock. Then help them break two craft sticks, and glue them randomly over the sand.
The Wise man that built his house on the Rock Matthew 7:24-27 The Wise and Foolish Builders Everyone who hears His words and puts them into practice (For children 2-4) New International Reader's Version (NIRV) 24 “So then, everyone who hears my words and puts them into practice is like a wise man. He builds his house on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man. He builds his house on sand. With Preschoolers it’s good to reinforce a biblical concept with a phrase that you repeat over and over throughout the lesson. In our story of the Wise and foolish builders we have two men that heard but one didn’t obey. We see the consequences of his decisions to ignore Jesus’s teachings. Its important for our children to know that can be the wise and foolish builder weather or not we listen and obey (apply) God’s teachings and instructions in our lives. Before we begin our class we review what we learned the week before (prayer) Prayer is us talking to God, and He always listens and he speaks to us. He will use things like the Holy Spirit in church, or while we read the Bible, and He will use people to minister to us such as our Pastor, Sunday school teachers and our parents. Sometimes God answers our prayers right away, sometimes it takes a while and other times it seems that He didn’t answer. But it’s important to know that God knows what He’s doing and He does all things for our good. Jeremiah 29:11New International Version (NIV) 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. When Jesus teaches us it’s because He loves us and He wants to show us the way we should go, sometimes we like what we hear and sometimes it may be hard to do what He says but we should obey and trust in Him. Here I asked the children some questions Jesus said for us to love your neighbor is it always good to love your neighbor? Is it easy when they’re being mean to you? So what should we do? Mark 12:31 and Leviticus 19:18 Well Jesus said we should pray for them, it that easy to do? Sometimes we can be angry and it’s hard to pray for them but we should obey and pray for them. Luke 6:28 and Matthew 5:44 Jesus said we should obey our parents. Is it always easy to obey your parents? How about when we’re playing with our toys and it’s getting late and our parents say we have to go to bed… is it easy to obey? No but we should obey because they love us and know what’s best for us. Ephesians 6:1, Colossians 3:20 and Exodus 20:12 But what happens when we don’t obey? Trouble comes and we often get hurt and when we do obey we live long lives, safe and happy. So what should we do? We should obey Jesus. (Object lesson) Today we’re going to learn about to men, one that obeyed what he heard and another that didn’t obey. When we listen to Jesus and His teachings it’s like us building our house on this rock, it’s safe, hard and sure. When we build on the rock we have to dig into the rock and its hard work! It’s not easy to build on a rock just like it’s not always easy to obey. But if we don’t listen it’s like us building our house on this sand. It’s a lot easier! We can finish faster but is it the right thing to do? Are our ideas better than Jesus’s? Let’s see what happens when hard times come, like a storm (fill the container with Water to cover all the rocks/sand- keep in mind both houses are made of paper- for the house on the sand have the house sit on the sand but for the house on the rock elevate it slightly so the water doesn’t touch it). What happened? One was destroyed! But what happened to this one? It’s okay! Why was it okay? Because the builder obeyed what God had said. So it’s good to obey what God said! And He’ll keep us safe. It may not always be easy but He knows best because He made us and loves us. This is one of the best videos out there with the wise and foolish builders theres another video on the wise and foolish builders Finish the lesson with the Children with a prayer accepting Jesus in their hearts. Then it’s time for the craft! For this lesson I had already purchased the birdhouses at Michael’s ($1 each) and hot glue gunned rocks to the base of the bird house (the rocks are from The Dollar tree-one bag is enough). I then had the kids paint their houses. This is optional. After they finished I took them back home and put a coat of Mod Podge (glossy finish) to insure that the paint didn’t come off if they bird house was set outside. there's also a great song to sing with preschoolers to go with this story. I don't have a video but I did find one on you tube that shows how to sing this song. I hope it helps

For Jr. Church Sunday I planned on teaching about the wise man and the foolish man. Sunday morning I awoke to a fresh layer of snow covering everything. Of couse, although I had my lesson planned out, I had not gotten my rock or sand for my illustration. So in my Sunday shoes I went out and trudged around the church playground to get sand and then went looking to find a big rock. I looked everywhere and could not find one rock that was bigger than a pebble! Finally as I went back in the house I saw one sitting under the tree only few steps from the front door of the parsonage. I was thrilled to find a rock but aggravated I hadn't seen it before. I used simple paper cups for houses and told the kids the story as I poured water on the houses. Of course the house built on the solid foundation stood while the house without the foundation fell. We then talked about how God is the strong foundation that we needed to build our lives (houses) upon. I took a plate and wrote God on it and then took pretzels and frosting and started building a pretzel house. As I laid each piece of the house in place, we talked about how reading our Bibles, obeying, trusting, praying, attending church, ect. all help us to build our strong lives centered on God. I then let each of the kids build their own pretzel houses. It was so much fun to watch their serious little faces as they concentrated so hard on building their houses. I heard several comments later from parents that their kids came home and retold the story and told how they need to build their lives on God. Amen! So nice to know that the kids are listening!
