For our Combined lesson this month I thought the girls needed to hear how special and unique they were. It ended up being a great lesson. I played this clip from President Uchtodorfs talk You are not Forgotten I also played the song Walk Tall, You're a Daughter of God I attached this to a little glittery snowflake I purchased at Walmart for $1.97 for a pack of 20
Is there any better time of year? It is time to enjoy delicious cider and hot chocolate, appetizers and parties…the Holidays. Enjoy this time! We would like to introduce you to “The Modern Family” and all that that means. There is no normal when it comes to families these days. Families come in all shapes and sizes and include people who share genetics but can also include those that we meet along the way of life that somehow find their way into our hearts and households. It’s the best time of year to be thankful and reflect on those we call Family. Pull them close; remind them and yourself of how important they really are. On Our Cover: Meet the Williamsons. They are one of our featured “Modern Families.” Check out their story on page 12.

Last week I did a day that was all snowman themed and I thought I would share some of the ideas. I shared a sneak peak of my snowman compare and contrast idea last week, but I wanted to share some of my kiddos finished products. They turned out so cute. I even came up with a corny teacher saying to hang up next to the snowman pals. This was pretty corny...but it went well with the snowman pals! We also made a snowman snazzy snack. I used three powdered sugar donuts, M&M candies, chocolate chips, and pretzel sticks for the arms. I left my pretzels at home so this is an armless snowman, but still very delicious. The kids love fun little snacks like this and it’s even better if it goes with a theme or the objective you are teaching. Thanks Lisa for bringing in all the goodies to make these. I also have a fun little freebie for all you bloggers out there. After taking our nonsense word assessment we (our grade level) realized that we had a very big problem….Our kids couldn’t decode nonsense words. Ahhh! The results were scary. We decided to make an effort to put this into our daily lessons and small group work. Here is the snowball nonsense word game I made. I am using it in our RTI groups and as a Daily 5 work on words station. Just click the picture below to download your freebie. I hope everyone in enjoying there VERY CRAZY last week or so of teaching. I am getting pretty excited about that Christmas break.
I can’t really say we love “winter” here in Texas…specifically, south Texas. There’s not much winter here to speak of. We have a few cold snaps here and there, but at this very moment, my 5-year-old is chasing our new dog outside…in his shorts…and nothing else ;) Now that’s MY kind of winter!!!!!! We’re bringing …
Hi friends! Happy Friday! Today was our report card writing PA day and I am so glad we get this day to write! I basically locked myself up in my room and wrote all day so I feel good about the amount I got done today! I brought some assessments and documentation home, so I'm hoping to be as equally productive tomorrow :) But I'm taking a break from COL's to share some things we have been up to this week in our class! 1. WINTER PRINTING PRACTICE My kiddos always need practice with letter formation, and there is nothing winter about these printables except the clip art and colours, but just making the sheets look different once in a while ups the engagement when practicing the same skill over and over. Also, I changed the printing practice from just tracing to tracing in bubble letters with formation lines, tracing dotted lines and then practicing the letter on their own to make it a little more differentiated and challenging. If you are interested in these printing sheets you can grab them by clicking here or on the image below: 2. WINTER DRAWING PROVOCATION I got this idea from Montessori Design blog and thought it was a great, simple drawing invitation to put out during centre time! The kids enjoyed following the directions and learning how to draw their own snowflakes and it was great fine motor practice and practice for following visual directions! I just drew each step in a square, cut them out, glued them on a piece of blue cardstock and laminated the strip for durability. 3. CAN YOU BUILD A SNOWFLAKE? This was another great hands-on centre for looking closely and using creativity to create! Students were invited to use the snowflake images as inspiration and create their own snowflakes using loose parts. I set out silver pipe cleaners, q-tips, blue/clear marbles and blue/white pom poms but you can use any white/blue loose parts you have on hand! I got these great snowflake photograph cards from MOMtesorri Life blog. You can click here to grab them for free too! 4. COUNTING BUTTONS I also set out this printable during math centres this week and invited them to read the number beside the snowman and add that many buttons with a q-tip and paint. My kids love anything with paint and it was good practice for my intervention students. You can find this printable in my winter pack by clicking here if you are interested. 5. SNOWBALL PLAY DOUGH MATS My kids also love anything play dough and many of them need practice with creating sets so I made these snowball play dough counting mats and set them out with white play dough. They could make the numeral and make that many snowballs in the ten frame or in the blank space below. I made them half page in 1-10 and full page in 11-20 for the kids who are ready for bigger numbers. If you want to grab these play dough mats they are also included in my winter activities pack which you can find by clicking here. Ok that's it from me this week! I hope you were able to find some ideas to use in your classroom! Have a great weekend! - Yukari
