An allegorical angelic scene by noted American fine artist, muralist, and illustrator Charles Allen Winter titled "Liberty Unchained." Our research leads us to believe this was an interior magazine illustration for Cosmopolitan, which ran a series of spiritually relevant writings by Roycroft founder and early twentieth century philosopher Elbert Hubbard under the title "Little Sermons"--all illustrated by Winter. Several of Winter's "Sermons" paintings were then reproduced in Hubbard's own publication "The Fra." From the estate of Charles Martignette, the sadly departed author of the "The Great American Pin-Up."

A wonderful life size oil painting portrait of Elizabeth Oakes in the classical manner by American artist Charles Allen Winter (1869-1942). Winter was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and studied with Thomas Noble at the Cincinnati Art Academy, as well as in Europe at the Academie Julian (Paris) with William-Adolphe Bourguereau. He became a well known illustrator for prominent magazines like Hearst’s, Cosmopolitan, and Collier’s. He, along with his artist wife, Alice Beach Winter, would become influential artists at the Cape Ann Art Colony in Massachusetts, well known for his colorful landscapes, seascapes and portrait painting. His subject in this painting, Elizabeth Oakes, in her younger years, often played on the grounds of the Red Cottage on Gloucester's East Main Street, where Charles and Alice summered with their friends John Sloan, Stuart Davis, Paul Conoyer, Agnes Millen Richmond and Winthrop Turney. The painting was shown at the Gloucester Society of Artists in the First Exhibition of their sixth season in July of 1928 (photocopy of newspaper article included). The dress worn by Elizabeth bears a similarity to a dress worn by Grace Coolidge, wife of President Calvin Coolidge, now in the collection of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, and housed in an exquisite carved giltwood frame. This painting has been professionally restored.
