Antique Botanical Print EPILOBIUM VILLOSUM HOARY ( HAIRY) WILLOW-HERB Drawn and engraved for William Curtis in "Flora Londinensis: Or Plates and Descriptions of Such Plants as Grow Wild in the Environs of London." Published London 1777 This is a fine, good sized, hand coloured 18th century copper engraving from this major botanical work by William Curtis. Curtis began with the wild plants from the immediate vicinity of London and intended to expand the work to include species within 10 miles of the city and ultimately to those indigenous to the entire British Isles. His vision was curtailed however by a lack of sales and the project was never completed. These fine delicate engravings are widely collected and have been described as the most successful portrayals of British wild flowers that have ever been achieved. The plants are engraved to a uniform scale and displayed to life size with accurate colouring which remains bright and fresh. Accompanying the print are notes which provide the botanical detail to assist in the identification of the species. Fine, clean condition free of repairs or restoration , perfect for framing and display. Approx. 18.5" x 11" (470mm x 280mm) overall. Printed on robust hand laid paper, no folds, blank verso. ................................................................... William Curtis (1746-99) was Director of the Society of Apothecaries at the Chelsea Physic Garden and a botanist with a broad knowledge of exotic species. Following Flora Londinesis he went on to publish The Botanical Magazine which continued for over 160 years. The Botanical Magazine, with its showy exotic species brought Curtis the financial success that Flora Londinensis with its common wayside British plants never achieved. Over 200 years later however his definitive achievement is fully appreciated by today's discerning eye. A GENUINE ANTIQUE PRINT GUARANTEED OVER 245 YEARS OLD FROM LINDISFARNE PRINTS NF K 8 24

Charcoal ink is made from burning willow twigs to produce the base ingredient for our ink. This ink is produced in small batches from collecting the twigs from our Sussex willows and burning these in a kiln, then grinding the charcoal to dust and blending it into our ink. Charcoal has been used since ancient times in art and medicine and the willow is known as the tree of enchantment. Our willow charcoal ink produces an off-black colour with grey undertones similar to using charcoal in drawing. It is particularly compatible with our Oak Gall and Copper blends. These inks do sometimes contain texture which reflects their natural origin and are produced in small batches using only Sussex rainwater, fire and natural preservatives. They come in 30ml glass vials with screw top lids and make the perfect gift as they are individually gift wrapped and come with instructions for use. You can see our small workshop in the videos where all our inks are hand blended with many other blends available as the seasons dictate. Many inks which claim to be 'natural' inks are in fact made with chemicals. We do not include any heavy metals into our inks at all or any chemicals whatsoever. They are mordant free and only contain natural preservative and thickener. We are against the use of chemicals in art materials and want to enhance the availability of using all natural inks while at the same time respecting the laws of foraging. There are no chemical ingredients or false colours in any of our inks. The colour produced is purely from the plant, flower, berry, nut/seed, bark (and natural metal) and our extraction and mixing technique. Foraged from nature, our botanical ink blends are delicate and unique. Hand made in small batches using nature's victuals and traditional methods, our inks are exclusively crafted in Ashburnham, Sussex, blended using rainwater from Sussex skies. Our inks transform over time and can be intensified by layering. You will notice the colours can be subtle to start with but if you wait a little time, the colour will appear stronger. The inks can also change by using different paper or brushes. Sadly, our inks are not suitable to be used with fountain pens but do produce distinctive results when used with dip pens brushes given the subtle shades and transformations in colour. Please remember to shake the ink before use as some separation may occur. We use fire, rainwater and nature to produce these wonderful colours. As the ingredients for our inks come from nature, it means that many blends are seasonal. Copper, rose petal, charcoal and hibiscus are our standard blends, although many others can be made to order dependent upon nature's availability. Some of our seasonal ingredients include: blackberry, wild cherry, dandelion root, rose hip, lichen, oak gall, walnut, chalk, acorn cap, gorse flower, beetroot, linden blossom, dock leaves, broom stems and birch tree bark. Please use a UV-fixative if you want to keep your inks from transforming too much and also remember to agitate them by shaking thoroughly before use. We are passionate about all things natural and non-harmful to nature so we use a natural preservative however you may notice on some blends that sometimes they can acquire a tiny amount of mould, there is nothing wrong with the ink with this as it shows they are natural. We recommend just taking this out with a cotton bud. To extend the shelf-life of the inks, put them somewhere cool and out of sunlight. As in nature, some things are harmful to us if ingested so we would ask you to keep the inks away from children and pets. Please also remember that if you repeat an order later on, there may be variation in colour as each batch is unique. Have a look at our video of where we blend our inks. We welcome questions and do ask if there's a specific blend you would like. We also sell our inks in cost-saving sets. See our listings for choices.
