Hiya peeps! I've gotten kind of lazy about posting since I've been on Spring Break, but I am totally enjoying my time off with the kiddos. Last week was a fantastic week at our school. It was College Week - a week when we talk about college and our future.... basically we learned about lots of jobs and made the decision about what we want to be when we grow up. Super fun!!! Of course, we decorated for this special event too. Here is my entryway to my classroom. The sign says, "Class of 2025". That sounds so far off, but it's really not. Kind of creepy......makes me feel old :0) I just covered my doorway with white butcher paper and cut strips. Then I stapled these cute graduation hats (they have the kids' names on it with glitter). The kids loved this so much they were super careful not to damage it. If you like the little sign - here it is -- GRAB HERE! Here is my door. My district publishes a children's book about going to college and how it's a "road to success". I kind of played off that and we made a roadway. The kids chose a car - colored it to make it their own and helped me put their car on the "road to success". And my door..... We made these super cute graduates - The kids were told to make it really look like them. We had talked about skin color and diversity in January so it was so easy for them to understand what they needed to do to make their graduate look just like them. During the week, we also wrote about what we wanted to grow up to be. The kids hand wrote what they wanted to grow up to be and I placed those sheets in their Pride folders. However, I typed each one up using their words and placed on our graduates. My 2 favorites were: The girl who said she wants to be a "cop so I can save the day"! (And the little girl said it with lots of enthusiasm and jazz hands!) My other favorite was the boy who wants to be Peter Parker because Peter Parker gets to be Superman! I then took each child's picture using a lovely red frame that said, "I am going to college!" I borrowed this frame from my teacher-friend, Sandra. Thanks, Sandra!! I LOVE the way it turned out! Here are a few other doors from around my school: This was really cute. It has a cut-out where the kids stick their faces for pictures! Some great doors, huh? One of the really memorable activities we got to participate in was when a fireman came to tell us about his job. He also let us try on his cool gear - which was the most AWESOME part! Looking for something for your students to graph and not those old, boring ones? Try this.

Piedra, papel, y tijeras. Students will love this rock, paper, scissors game that utilizes ser or estar verb conjugations with the acronym D.O.C.T.O.R. (ser) or P.L.A.C.E. (estar). Place students in groups of two. Students will play "piedra, papel, o tijeras" to see who can advance their game piece. If a student wins with "rock" they move forward one space, a win with scissors would be a 2 space move, and a win with paper would mean going forward 3 spaces. The next step is choosing the proper verb conjugation of "ser" or "estar" AND providing the D.O.C.T.O.R. or P.L.A.C.E. reason for that choice (for example: Yo____en la escuela: ESTOY would fill in the blank because it is describing a "position" or "location"). If a student is unable to choose the correct verb AND is unable to provide the correct reason behind D.O.C.T.O.R. or P.L.A.C.E. he/she would lose 1 turn. The first student that makes it to the "el fin" box wins. Paper clips and eraser tops work great for game pieces. Introducing students to art history – to “masters” who have shaped artistic styles – can be challenging. Keith Haring is one of our most beloved American artists of the 20th century. His body of work is recognized all over the world and his iconic characters speak, not only to a flair for fun, but a passion for personal and global issues. The untitled painting, ”Dance” has been reprodduced countless times because of it’s massive appeal. This resource highlights the artist and his image by offering a complete and comprehensive, collaborative project for your students that will engage and inform. You’ll receive everything you need to begin a dialog and create your own “class masterpiece.” The concept is simple – the results are awesome! You will receive: 40 “TILES” The tiles are 7 ½” X 7 ½.” Each tile is labeled with a number (1 – 40) and unique - to represent a specific part of the image. They‘re calibrated to flow seamlessly into one anther to form the completed picture. *Please view ALL THE TILES in “Preview.” Using simple materials such as colored pencils, markers, crayons, paints, pastels - each student works independently on his/her “tile.” Once completed, the 40 tiles are joined together to form the whole. Simply trim away the excess paper and tape the squares together on the back. Easier still, tape them in place directly on the wall. The finished artwork will be an impressive (app.) 60” x 38.” PICTURE A black and white drawing of “Dance." Friends~I finally figured it out-2 for 1 composition books! I have been loving the composition books that have been cut in half recently. I have seen them on several blogs and I have gone to Lowes and Home Depot as suggested to have my 12 books cut in half so that I had 24 smaller books. Doubling my lot! (The kiddos never use a whole page anyway:) Here's my journey for the 2 for 1! I first made several trips to Lowes and Home Depot but they left me defeated. Don't get me wrong the guys that helped me and tried to cut the books were super kind but their saws ate, destroyed, tore, and mangled my books. After the loss of my 2nd book the man at Home Depot suggested that I try Office Max. Look-ie, Look-ie! It was less than $3 to have these 2 for 1 babies cut! Office Max can cut around 8 at a time.  What a CRAZY week and weekend!!! We are finished with our state testing and school fair. Yahoo!!! This past week consisted of finishing up state testing, teaching students a dance for the fair performance, painting a picture for the fair silent auction, (see picture below), making over 50 candy apples for the sweets booth, and practicing for the teacher fair performance! Yes, I am one of 11 teachers who actually dances in front of the parents and students at the fair!!! I still need to put together portfolios and make a power point presentation. I love making a power point from all of the pictures I take during the school year. I must admit that it takes over a week to construct because I always find a way to mess up something! It never fails that every year I make some kind of mistake!!! For the portfolios, I save the students' work all year and use sheet protectors in binders. I like to put the work in order from the first to last day for the parents. I put all work in sheet protectors. The parents appreciate the organization of the work so much because it saves them the time of doing it over the summer. Also, students complete a summer writing activity. This writing activity is my favorite one of the year. The creativity that flows from the students' brains is amazing! Students are asked to write about a summer trip they have taken already or plan on taking. After editing the rough draft, students write the final copy of the essay on sunglasses. Students glue glasses on large white construction paper and draw a picture around the glasses. I was amazed the first time I did this with my class. I did not instruct them to draw a person.
