The best place to see orca, whales and dolphins in Orkney is from the land. Hoxa Head (South Ronaldsay), Marwick Head and Scapa Flow (West Mainland) are all popular whale watching spots in Orkney's Mainland, while Catnick Head (Hoy), Noup Head (Westray) and North Hill (Papa Westray) are some of the best places to see orca in the Orkney Islands. Joining a wildlife tour is a great way to maximise your chances of orca and whale sightings, with Ocean Trek offering a great Historical and Wildlife Boat Tour. These dolphin and whale activities for kids with free printables have been some of Sunshine's favorites. She absolutely loves learning about marine mammals and anything that swims in the ocean. What I love about these dolphin and whale activities is that they teach so many different things about these beautiful ocean creatures. The images are absolutely stunning and help young learners understand the differences between each dolphin and whale. Add dolphin and whale figures to enhance the activities and kids can't take their eyes and hands off of them. Dolphin and Whale Activities for Kids with Free Printables Many of the printables in this post come from our Dolphins and Whales Printable Pack. This printable pack is designed for children in Montessori preschool and elementary classrooms. Dolphin and Whale Nomenclature and Description Cards Sunshine absolutely loves these dolphin and whale nomenclature and description cards. We chose dolphins and whales that match figures we have at home, but can rotate them out for other cards when she's ready to learn about more. Sunshine matches nomenclature cards with description cards and then places the correct dolphin or whale figure on the matching set. Dolphin and Whale Identification Clip Cards These dolphin and whale identification clip cards go perfectly well with the nomenclature cards above. Sunshine uses the nomenclature cards as a control when she needs it. In this activity Sunshine uses the whale and dolphin markers to mark the correct answer on the clip cards. Dolphin and Whale Body Part Nomenclature and Description Cards Learning about dolphin and whale body parts is so much fun! We've chosen to add animal figures to the activity so Sunshine can identify the parts on the figures. If you don't have figures, that's okay. Sunshine picks a picture card. I then read the corresponding description card. After that, she picks an animal figure and shows me the body part. Once Sunshine knows what each body part is, we will no longer use description cards. Baleen versus Teeth Sort Some whales have teeth. Others have no teeth. This activity is designed to teach children what whales eat depending on if they have teeth or not. How Big are Dolphins and Whales? Estimating Length Clip Cards Sunshine really enjoys measuring. We've worked on measuring inches. This activity introduces measuring by feet. Sunshine will learn to read the measurement on the card. She will then use rulers to see just how big each whale and dolphin are. More rulers will be provided for extra long whales. Once Sunshine uses rulers to measure the dolphin or whale we will discuss rounding and estimations to help her choose the correct answer on the clip cards. Dolphin and Whale Behaviors and Tricks Activity This activity is Sunshine's favorite on our shelves. I can't blame her. It is super fun! Sunshine picks out a picture card that shows a whale or dolphin behavior. I read the corresponding description card. She then picks out a figure and any other items necessary to demonstrate the behavior. Once Sunshine knows the descriptions, I will no longer read them. She will simply pick a picture card and demonstrate the behavior. I was a little worried about adding water play to an activity, but Sunshine has done very well following rules and boundaries. Lung or Gills Sorting Cards One of the most fascinating aspects of whales and dolphins is that they are mammals and breathe air. In this activity Sunshine sorts dolphins and whales with lungs and blow holes from sharks with gills. The true-to-life images are great in this activity. Sunshine loves to use her magnifying glass as she sorts through the images. If you're looking for more of a challenge, cut off the words at the bottom of the cards. This fall, we've had some fun with the higher reading group doing some non-fiction animal activities. These have been in a pile to share, so we apologize. :) We don't have any pictures, but we will do our best to share. We started with learning about sharks while we were learning the 'ar' sound. Sharks seem to be one of those things that really just grab the kiddos attention. They couldn't get enough of reading about sharks, looking at pictures of real sharks, and even watching a fun video. We began by reading several books about sharks, and made a chart of all of the cool and interesting facts that we learned. Next we completed this shark activity. We then read this little sheet that the kids loved, since it had such great pictures. They also loved that the got to take home a little mini-poster to teach their families about sharks. We read over this several times, and by the end, the kids were able to read most of it by themselves. (Keep in mind this is the high reading group, so we have several reading at a second grade level.) Last we each did a shark report to really share what we had learned about sharks. These turned out sooo cute, I wish I would have remembered to photograph them. Next time! {Also, I apologize that the jpeg cuts off the side of the picture. Drives me all kinds of crazy! The actual document is ok though.} Click below for copies of all of these for yourself! SHARK ACTIVITIES Later on, we learned all about whales when we learned the 'wh' sound. This came right after the sharks, which the kids loved. It was really fun to compare and contrast whales and sharks, and to discuss the similarities between the two. We followed the same basic pattern by starting with reading several books about whales. We also found some really great videos on you tube. HERE is a great one of whales breaching. Of course there were few if any of our kids who had seen this, so it was really fun to watch the kids watching them. We also watched a great video of Beluga whales singing, which was another really exciting idea for the first graders. Unfortunately when I went to link it, it had been removed. But I recommend sharing something similar if you're learning about whales. We then completed this whale activity. {Sorry, it doesn't seem to want to rotate for me. } The kids loved this whale text that we read together, and loved reading about different kinds of whales, and looking at their different pictures online as well. At the end of our whale activities, we also created whale reports. We had a great bulletin board of our reports up that turned out so cute! As mentioned before, we wrapped up by comparing and contrasting whales and sharks, and made this Venn diagram. Make sure to grab copies for yourself!
