For our very first art project of the 2012/13 school year, we learned about VINCENT VAN GOGH. He was a dutch artist who lived long ago and painted many pictures which now hang in museums all over the world. Some of his favorite subjects were sunflowers and night skies like the one above titled The Starry Night. (please excuse the glare in this photo) Our challenge was to work as a group to re-create this famous painting as a large mural. All of the kindergarten classes worked on this project during our art time. We used small strips of colored paper to repressent Van Gogh's brush strokes. Glue was applied to the back of each strip using our "handy dandy tool" (aka pointer finger). Each strip was then placed on the mural in a spot where each particular color was needed. We had to pay close attention to the direction of his brush strokes. We found that some were horizontal, vertical, diagonal and wavy. This is a close up of our finished mural. And this photo will give you an idea of just how large our mural is! It is currently hanging in the Kindergarten wing. We love it and hope you will stop by to see it for yourself!

We read Eric Carle's book THE ARTIST WHO PAINTED A BLUE HORSE. We liked the books so much that we decided to make some illustrations similar in style to his. We began by studying reference photos of many different animals. We practiced... and practiced... and practiced our drawing... until we got things just right! Next we used tissue paper and papier mache paste to cover a large piece of paper with an "unexpected color" just like Eric Carle who created pink rabbits and polka dotted donkeys! Once it was dry, we turned it over and drew our animals LARGE! Then we cut our animals out, and added them to our backgrounds. We love how different each of them look! And, we had fun adding details like feathers... and spots! Our display was enjoyed by all!
The WES Kindergarten artists have been learning about American artist and author, FAITH RINGGOLD. Faith Ringgold was born in 1930 and grew up in New York City's Harlem. She is most known for her "story quilts". She adapted one of these quilts, titled "Tar Beach", into a children's book in 1991. This book was recognized as one of the most distinguished American picture books for children in 1992 when it was named a Caldecott Honor Book. We spent a lot of time looking over the illustrations in Tar Beach, and decided to try creating versions of our own. Here is our process... The students began by painting a night sky background using different shades of tempera paint. They thought about the direction of their brushstrokes as they blended the colors over the entire paper. Then, using colored construction paper, they began cutting shapes as they pieced together a version of themselves flying through the sky. They dipped their finger (aka their "Handy Dandy Tool") into the glue... and then spread the glue onto their cut pieces of paper... before putting their paper shapes in place. This technique allows for better glue control. The students were encouraged to think about size as well as how they would position the arms and legs of their person to give the illusion of flying. Once their person was glued into place it was time to add the stars. Small dots of glue were squeezed onto the paper... and then sprinkled with glitter for that all important shimmer and shine! Then, each student created a "quilted" border around the edges of a separate, larger piece of paper. Small, pre-cut squares of wallpaper were used for this. Loads of thanks to Mrs. Littlefield and Mrs. Gilblair for their help in pre-cutting these squares! The Kindergartners had fun choosing from all of the different colors and patterns. One little artist commented that they reminded her of her Grammie! With the border complete, it was time to join their two pieces together... and then join everyone's together... to create one large story quilt. What an exciting event! With this nice, long, curved wall in the Kindergarten wing, every single piece of art was able to be squeezed into this display (98 paper quilt pieces in all, I believe). Wow! That's one loooong quilt! These pieces will remain on display through December. We sure hope you'll fly by for a peek!

I and the children LOVE these AMAZING trash liner jellyfish. So simple, and yet such an amazing addition to our OCEAN/SEA theme. I have added a Youtube tutorial at the bottom. To make these I used two 10 gallon commercial trashcan liners, the ones for small office trash cans, at a cost of about 5 cents and about 10 minutes of time each. #1 The first liner is opened up, four "corners" [just grab the edge about every 1/4 around] brought together and stapled, then stuffed down into the center of the bag to create a bowl shape. #2 For the second liner, cut off the sealed edge. It is accordion folded in fourths. Unfold completely and fold over once to create a square, giving you four layers of plastic. Cut off the edges and cut into spiral. I did about a 1 - 1 1/4 inch thickness. The wider the strip the shorter the "tentacles." I didn't try to be that accurate or to make a perfect circle. I knew once they were opened out that it wouldn't matter. You end up with a pretty long strip. I folded it in half and cut it to create two strips of equal length. Since it's actually doubled over double layers, this gives you 8 tentacles total. Spread them all apart. \ If you try to attach them without separating them first, they will cling to one another and not fall properly to create the tentacle effect. Once separated, join them all together, placing them randomly together in a circle and stapling together. Since you have two sets of four of the same cut, this is important that they not sit perfectly together or it won't look right. Stick the tentacle staple up against the inside of the bowl shaped bag and push up with your hand. Collect all layers on the top, along with a string to hang if wanted, and staple. You can't see the staple on the ones I have up. The plastic folds over and hides it. The layers are: TENTACLES TOP OF BAG gathered together and folded over [pic below] BOTTOM CENTER OF BAG STRING FOR HANGING All are stapled through at once. I can now make them with just one stable through the whole thing, but it is easier to staple the tentacles first, then the top of the bag, then the combined pieces. These are WONDERFUL!! I'm so glad I came across the idea. I think my process is MUCH easier than the original instructions, which used clear rubber bands. This is an original idea of Casa Haus English that her daughter created for a school assignment. She placed her jellyfish creation on a stick and used it as a movable puppet. Our jellyfish did the same, which is really cool, but with 2 and 3-year-olds, playing with plastic bags just doesn't work. So, ours are hung from the ceiling. TUTORIAL I have received several emails about the bringing the "corners" together step, so have created the following tutorial. A couple of things to note is that for this one I used smaller liners than the ones in this post, and I folded the first liner in quarters rather than opening it out and folding it in half, so the tentacles came out shorter. Only the last staple is necessary. If you are making a lot of these, you'll probably get to the point where you can just hold it all together and only use the one staple.
