Looking for a fun way to keep the summer vibes going? Have you ever tried hair wrapping? It's a colorful and temporary way to add some pizazz to your hair. Hair wraps are basically like friendship bracelets... for your hair. The wrapping process is so easy and fun that older kids can even do it too. So grab your stash of embroidery floss and let's DIY some hair wraps! Directions below. How to do DIY Hair Wraps with kids This post contains affiliate links. Materials Needed to Hair Wrap: Embroidery Floss with bobbins* Scissors (We use sharp fabric scissors) Comb / Brush Hair ties (One small one for the braid + larger one to tie up the hair that isn't being wrapped) Comfy seat (~ 20 minutes per hair wrap) At least 4 inches of hair Optional: Beads with bigger holes (to accommodate embroidery floss) *It's better to use embroidery floss wrapped around bobbins of some sort so the string doesn't get tangled up. Don't have bobbins? You can always DIY your own (We made cute cardboard bunny bobbins) Hair Wrapping Directions: 1. Section off a piece of hair on the top of your child's head. It should be less than the diameter of a pencil. Braid it and then put a small rubber band on the bottom to hold it. If it's possible, tie back the rest of the child's hair (so strands of hair don't fly into your hair wrap. This is more difficult if you have fine hair or shorter hair.) Note: I've noticed that younger kids seem to like hair wraps on the top of their heads and older kids like them on the bottom by the nape so they just pop out sometimes. Also, you can easily do this with clip-on extensions if you don't want to wrap real hair. 2. Grab your embroidery thread and ask the child to choose 4 colors. Then, measure out 3x the length of your braid for each strand of thread. (This will ensure that you have enough to wrap around your braid.) 3. Tie your embroidery floss to the very top of your braid. (The closer you can get to your scalp, the better.) Double or even triple knot it. (Don't worry about the excess embroidery thread on top. You will just trim those strands off later!) 4. Now it's time to start wrapping! (I will try my best to explain the process, but if this is unclear, I've included some links down below that will make things clearer.) Choose 1 or 2 color strands that you want to use to wrap your hair. (We chose bright pink + light pink.) Then, proceed to wrap those 2 strands tightly around both the braid AND the other unused embroidery floss strands. Keep wrapping until you get a nice section of wrapped hair. Note: Depending on the texture or length of the child's hair, it could be difficult to begin hair wrapping because the rest of the strands will blow into your wrap. It's ok. It will get easier as you go along. 5. When you're finished with one section of hair wrap and want to change colors, simply tie your 1-2 strands (in our case dark pink + light pink) with a knot around the braid + other unused strands. This will end one section. 6. Then, simply choose 1 or 2 different colored strands and begin wrapping again. Tie off when you're done with that section. Keep repeating this process of wrapping + tying off sections until the majority of your hair is wrapped. Do a double/triple knot to secure the final strings to your braid. Note: The little rubber band used to tie your braid can come off. You don't need it now. 7. Cut off the excess embroidery floss on top and bottom of your hair wrap. You're all done!!! Note: This process takes about 20 minutes of time, depending on how long the child's hair is + how long they can sit still. How long will these DIY hair wraps stay in place? (Can you take regular showers and baths?) Yes! You can shower and bathe with the wraps. They will stay as long as you want. If you tied the wrap tightly, they can stay on for 1 week (or longer.) If you don't like them, you can simply cut off the knot and unravel the string. Still unsure what to do? Hello my dear friends, unfortunately I hurt my back whilst shoveling snow on Sunday morning. That meant that I had to rest a lot by lying down, because sitting was the worst thing I could do. So whilst lying down I took the time to write up a tutorial of my hymn page feathers for you. I love these feathers so much! When I look at them I imagine being embraced by them and any worries being taken away from me. I also imagine feelings of comfort, warmth and safety. I chose to use hymn pages because this is how I imagine Angels wings to look. What better choice than paper written with songs for God, made into angel feathers? Of course you can make these feathers out of music sheets, book pages, dictionary pages, or any other kind of paper that would suit you or your creation best. The feathers are very easy to make, they take a little time, but you will love them when you are done. I have made a few feathers out of different papers so you can see what they will look like. Some more hymn page feathers. This feather was made from a very old German book. The writing is called "Alt Deutsche Schrift" ~ Old German Writing. My grandmother used to write like this and taught me how to read it. This feather is made from a dictionary page. Now let us start ... this is what you will need: - Hymn pages (music sheets, dictionary pages, book pages) - Scissors - Tacky glue - Wire cutters - Cloth stem wire wire 22 gauge (mine was 45 cms long) - Piece of card for the template - A pencil To start off with, print out the template. I have given you 2 sizes, a larger feather and a smaller one. I will have all measurements listed for both of them. Cut a piece of wire 35cms/20cms long long and bend the wire in half, so that one end is 3cms longer than the other. Take a piece of paper of your choice, and draw a line of glue down the center and place your wire into the glue, leaving the single piece of wire of 3cms out at the bottom. Now place your second sheet of paper on top of the first, press it down firmly and leave it to completely dry. After it is dry, cut out your template and lay it on your sheet with the wire centered and draw around it ~ now you can cut the feather shape out. Next cut a fine strip of paper about 5 mm wide and the length of a page, spread some glue on it and wrap it around the uncovered wire, starting at the top. When you get to the end of the wire, wrap it around one last time, cut it the excess off and let it dry again. Now comes the fun part! Taking a pair of sharp scissors, and cut fine diagonal lines into your feather towards the center where the wire is but be sure to not cut all the way down to the wire. Cut all the way around your feather... and voila you are done!!! Sit back and take a look at your beautiful creation! I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial as much as I have making it for you and just remember that these feathers will be delicate after you have made them - they are made from paper after all! And last but not least ... ... a new pincushion I would like to share with you. Made from a vintage baby cup, some old lace and a boot button for the center of the flower. A bit late on this one because we had the actual class on the second Friday. But here you go. Because February is the month of LOVE, we studied lettering so the girls could use some fun lettering techniques to make Valentine cards if they'd like. We began by talking about how NOBODY loves their own handwriting, but they should. It's unique to them and it's part of them. We talked about changing a few letters here and there to make things look more fancy. (Don't try this at school--teachers don't love this) For instance, look at the a, t and g I just typed. Adding those old fashioned ways of writing those letters can make your writing look more fancy. We also talked about where you place part of the letters making differences. (see page 1 below). The bouncy writing is when you don't have all your letters level on a line, some are high and some are low--bouncy. We practiced lots of fun types of writing (see both pages 1 and 2 below). I even let the girls in on how I do the lettering for my signs. (Steps 1-5 writing 'TiF' on page 2). Pardon the wrinkles in the pages. My naughty dog walked on them in the car. :( But you get the idea. The next thing we did was start a page like this one: (dog really got to this one...) This is a fun page to put in your sketchbook or journal and add to it whenever you feel like practicing some writing. You can add anything you love--ice cream, sunshine, your family...anything! It's also a great way to remind you of all the things you love and help you be grateful for them! Hard at work This little sweetie is always so bold and fearless...I LOVE it!! This one didn't want to be locked in to doing 100, so she just put "a lot of things I love" :) We ended the class by playing Valentine Bingo that I found HERE. Notice the fun lettering on the bingo cards--lettering is everywhere! :) The girls did so well and we had a lovely 2nd Friday afternoon! See you next month!

Hello and welcome, friends! I've been busy as a little bee working on all kinds of fun projects and I'm so happy to finally be able to share them with you! Today I have 3 projects to share with you using all of the beautiful new products from the These are the Days Collection from The Greetery! Don't forget to head to The Greetery Blog for the official "Meet and Greet" for all of the new products! As you've probably gathered, this collection is calendar-themed which is so fun and unique! They are being released just in time to get started on all of those handmade Christmas gifts we all love to create! My first project is a 2024 floral desk calendar for my upcoming 5th grader to give to his teacher. It begins at August and ends with December. I will make her a new one for 2025 and have my son give it to her as part of her Christmas gift! I used the new Calendar Basics stamp set to create each of the calendars for the month. As you can see here, I used the circle image and "Big Day" sentiment to highlight the first of school that is approaching WAY too quickly! eek! This project is easy to put together in assembly line fashion! To begin, I stamped the grid image using the Calendar Basics stamp set and Hickory Smoke distress oxide ink on white A2 panels. I used my MISTI to make quick work of this part. Once the panels were stamped, I used the Jumbo Jar Die to cut each of the calendar months. I used the Calendar Grid stencil to add color to each of the months. I had previously stamped ALL of the Birth Month Blooms flowers so I was able to decide which color stenciling I wanted to do based on which flower would coincide with that month. Hopefully that makes sense! I tucked the flowers into the jars and secured them with liquid glue. I alternated them from one side to the other so that when they are stacked up the display would be full and beautiful. If you look at the full calendar all put together, you will see some violets popping out on the right-hand side; I added those to a blank jar panel to the back to give the calendar more symmetry and additional color . I was pleased to find some wood blocks to use as the calendar stand and you can find them HERE. They are a good price and I will be able to give calendars as gifts as needed! The cover was created using the previously released Bold Numbers Die to make the 2024. I added some flowers using the BotaniCuts: Wildflower Mix dies and the Winter Medley Die. The Greetery is also offering some pre-printed 2025 calendar pages and I used the cover as inspiration for this cover. My next project is a birthday card I just made for my daughter who celebrated her birthday on the 22nd! I just love how you can make your projects so personalized with these new products! This card features the Calendar Grid Die paired with the Spiral Bound die, (this gives you the option of creating faux spirals like I did here, or to make the holes to add the real spiral binding on an actual calendar) Birth Month Blooms, and the new One Fine Day stamp/die set. One of my favorite flowers in the collection is the Larkspur and I was pleasantly delighted to find out it is July's flower! Yay! I had already told myself I would use it no matter which month it was for! ha ha! I added in a few other month's flowers to give it variety and additional color! To give the calendar personalization, I added the 22 that was stamped using the Calendar Basics stamp set on a rectangle that was cut when I die cut the grid. I popped it into the proper space using a min foam square. I used metallic cardstock for both the spiral binding and the cute hanger at the top. My cute daughter kept leaving comments on my Instagram posts (if it was a birthday card) saying, "Can this be my birthday card?" so I was worried she would be disappointed she didn't get one that she commented on, but she LOVED this one and said she liked it best! My final project for today is a fun notecard set using the different Birth Month Blooms. I haven't mentioned before, but each of the Birth Month Blooms are compiled in quarters. There is a Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4 stamp/die set so you can buy them as you need them or for those months where loved ones have special days. I had set out at the beginning of my creative sessions by stamping all of the flowers multiple times so I would have a good variety of images to pick from as I was creating! Doing that made this project go much quicker than if I stamped them all out one by one. Here you can see a few of the different varieties with their coordinating envelopes. I have made and shown this stationery box a few times over the years, but for those who may be new, I will share the dimensions. The bottom of the box is made using a piece of cardstock measuring 8 1/2 by 10 and then score at two inches in from each side. The top is made using a piece of cardstock measuring 7 1/8 by 8 5/8 and score on each side 1 1/4 inches from the edges. Use a bone folder and cut tabs on the four sides and secure with ScorTape. As I mentioned before, this box holds nine cards, so I wasn't able to get a full year of cards. I used foam squares for each of the cards so if you made them flat, you could possibly get 12 in there. I also want to mention that the shop will also be offering some Birth Month Blooms Cutables so you can save some time using those as well. They would be perfect if you're planning on making a bunch of gifts for Christmas and you find yourself in a pinch!
