You might remember that, last autumn, I was fiddling around a bit with some fun needle woven fillings that can be used to add color, texture, and pattern to large areas of embroidery. Needle weaving is pretty much just weaving embroidery thread on the surface of fabric. In concept, it’s not too complicated. But the ...

Download the FREE Ombre Puff Quilt Pattern here! If you've been around for any amount of time, you might've seen my Puff Quilt that my grandmother made for me. I love this thing SO much. She used various scrap fabrics and clothing to create this very dense, yet very snuggly quilt. . . . When I look at this quilt, I see something new each time. Recycled tablecloths from the 80s, pieces of my grandfathers button-down shirts, left-over fabrics from previous quilt projects. The list goes on. Some fabrics are used multiple times within the quilt, while other fabrics are only represented once. I love looking over all of the puffs and finding all of the similarities and differences between the squares. . . . My Granny made this for me when I was 7 years old. I absolutely LOVE that she created a tag for this quilt. I also love that she referred to the quilt as a

Whilst being all about birds at the moment I was wandering around Pinterest and found this amazing lady from New Mexico. Her name is Geninne Zlatkis and her work is stunning. There are many different aspects to her work but mostly she makes and sells illustrative prints. They can be found on her Etsy shop at 'Geninne' and on her website 'genninesart.com', However looking around the web you can find some lovely work particularly her embroidery and collage. I think it is the clarity of her work that I enjoy so much. She has a great line and really attractive colourways. You could imagine any of her birds just flying away. Her colourful world is a feather filled place of joy & wonder which I will be enjoying for quite a while.
More than often, studying something too much may lead to confusion - Junko Oki I used red thread to create stitches that capture my soul - Junko Oki When I said to someone that I wanted to show both sides of my work, I was told that to do so was unprofessional. I should only show my best side, the side which is more beautiful and commit to it. Sensible advice, buut I still want to show the back side. Why? I don't know. Maybe finding a reason to that question is an important topic for me to pursue. Junko Oki When I touch an old fabric I feel like I'm going back in time. Junko Oki Memories can be implanted into material - Junko Oki I want to make many small pieces. I love to work spontaneously and follow the path my intuition leads me. Junko Oki All images and text in the above post are from Junko Oki's new book, Punk. Art by contemporary artists like Junko Oki combine with traditional folk textiles from around the globe as inspiration for the one day workshops I'm teaching in London this week. The circle: A universal symbol of wholeness and unity, timelessness, no beginning, no end, no above, no below. Spacelessness. Dynamic and endlessly moving, a complete cycle, natural perfection. J. C.
