One of my crafting goals that I set for myself way back at the beginning of the year was to learn how to spin. I had used a spindle on and off for a while, and felt that it was finally time to step it up a notch and try spinning with a wheel. It took a few bumpy starts, but once I got the feel for it I knew that I was completely hooked. I've been spinning up yarn faster than I can use it, and have gotten quite the ever-expanding fiber collection already! However, the one thing I have noticed is that I am still in the learning process for spinning with a specific weight of yarn in mind. So far, I have been spinning away, happy to see how the fiber twists up and plies together - all with no specific end goals or projects in mind. But for now, I am left with many skeins of yarn ranging from light sport all the way up through super bulky. So far, I've found myself spinning from 4oz. batts and rovings, which means that my finished product is going to be a single one-of-a-kind skein. This makes it tricky when it comes to using up my handspun yarn. I don't want to fuss with too many gauge swatches to find out what weight of yarn I have, since it is already a limited quantity. This is when I turned to wraps per inch as a tool to help me gauge my yarn!

It is easy to limit your record keeping to numbers. But it is when you keep physical records – samples and swatches – that the real fun begins.
I had my ups and downs but over all I think I actually like weaving with mohair. It was definitely a change of pace from my normal weaving. My style is usually heavy with texture, so this was a challenge to make something lighter. Mohair is much more tacky then the yarns I usually weave with,

Hooker Hill continued Wool Poppies President Katie was in my (Brigitta's) class. She is working on a Karla Girard design. Top picture taken early in the week, bottom was taken on Wednesday. Katie didn't get to work on her rug as much as the rest of us do to her hosting duties. Katie shared the rug below during our classes show and tell. The rug won first prize in our local fair. My tablemate and Wool Poppy, Barbara is working on a rug to go in her cabin. This squirrel is so cute. She was still trimming his tail when this was taken. Another classmate is working on a pattern called "Sleigh Ride" designed by Wool Poppy, Carla Jensen. This will be a night scene. I learned a lot watching the color selection for this rug. I took a 2 evening mini class from Laura Pierce. On the first night I learned how to dip dye wool for fall leaves. On the second night I learned how to use the wool to hook the leaves. In future posts I will show this project as I work on it. I'll also post pictures of the pieces of wool I'm working with. I'll wrap up my rug camp post in my next post. Til next time Ronda

Look at this! It's by Hata Larson. The source is Postila in Russia. Even though I can't read it, each picture is worth a thousand words. This looks like fun! Knit strips couched on monk cloth. Draw the main shape, then just fill in the spaces.
My good friend Marion came yesterday to get her some Majic. She brought some too. Look at this "elephant head" of roving she bought! And my flowers! I have a special way of dyeing roving, there is little impact to the roving, you don't need a mile long set up and you can get a great, beautiful bunch of self striping spinning happening. And Marion took to it like a pro. You can lay them out two ways for different effects. Here Marion has applied her Magic Carpet Dyes in pastellish form below, most colours were straight from the jar. Here's our other pan below with the wool running the other way. And we added some echo pieces on the top and along the sides just to show what can be done. You get a shorter roving with the same colours in short sections from the on top pieces, and the beside pieces give you longer sections of the same colours because they're put in wavy wiggles. You just pop them into the oven then at 350˚F for 35 minutes or until the water is clear. Here they are in the sink cooling down after the oven. Happy Spinning for the Spinzilla Marathon Marion! Try dyeing this way for your next roving session. Does the Majic interest you? Go here to learn more about them
