Le Steampunk est un concept issu de la littérature où la technologie n'a jamais progressé au-delà des machines à vapeur (Steam : vapeur en anglais). Il a donc existé depuis longtemps, bien avant l'invention du mot, on peut dire que Jules Verne ou H.G.Wells s'apparentent déjà au style Quelle époque, steampunk ? Le Steampunk est aussi appelé science-fiction victorienne. A noter qu'il se focalise sur les technologies et l'ère de la vapeur (steam), mais peut inclure de la magie et du fantastique. Sur le plan esthétique, le steampunk puise son charme irrésistible dans l'élégance raffinée de l'époque victorienne (1837-1901) en Angleterre, ainsi que dans la splendeur de la Belle Époque (1871-1914) en France et dans le style audacieux de la guerre de Sécession (1861-1865) aux États-Unis. Pourquoi punk dans steampunk ? L'inventeur du mot est à l' origine l'auteur K W Jeter. Steam pour la vapeur, clin d'œil à la révolution industrielle et Punk pour différencier ses œuvres des autres auteurs de science-fiction à la fin des années 1980 (en référence au cyberpunk).
