Le Steampunk est aussi appelé science-fiction victorienne. A noter qu'il se focalise sur les technologies et l'ère de la vapeur (steam), mais peut inclure de la magie et du fantastique. Sur le plan esthétique, le steampunk puise son charme irrésistible dans l'élégance raffinée de l'époque victorienne (1837-1901) en Angleterre, ainsi que dans la splendeur de la Belle Époque (1871-1914) en France et dans le style audacieux de la guerre de Sécession (1861-1865) aux États-Unis. Pourquoi punk dans steampunk ? L'inventeur du mot est à l' origine l'auteur K W Jeter.
