I was called to head up the Stake YW Camp Activities Committee again this year. They still like me! I am serving with some incredible women and young women. I am so excited! :) * This is simply a collection of ideas had along the way of preparing for camp. After camp I will update the post with all the fun details. Now time for the sharing. :) ** YW Camp 2012 THEME The Stake YW Camp Committee chose the theme: "Burn Bright with His Light". (lighthouse/nautical) FYI - the logo is not one we are using for camp, I created it for use here. * SCRIPTURE Doctrine and Covenants 84:45,46 "For the word of the Lord is truth, and whatsoever is truth is light, and whatsoever is light is Spirit, even the Spirit of Jesus Christ. And the Spirit giveth to every man that cometh into the world; and the Spirit enlighteneth every man through the world, that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit." * DAILY THEMES MONDAY: "Sail Forward with Faith" (I added this one for myself) :) TUESDAY "Beacons of Light", John 2:10 WEDNESDAY: "Be a Crew Member", Moroni 7:45 THURSDAY: "Let Your Light Shine", Matthew 5: 14-16 FRIDAY: "Find Your True North", Moroni 10:4-5 SATURDAY: "Keep His Light Burning Bright", 2 Nephi 31: 16-21 * 100th ANNIVERSARY SERVICE PROJECT This year, 2012, marks the 100th year of Young Women Camp. There are some wonderful ideas on how to celebrate and some great YW Camp history shared here. * We as an activities committee decided we are going to commemorate this milestone by having the young women make 100 fleece baby blankets - while at camp - to donate to Children's Hospital and the Margery Mason Center, which are both located in our area. After camp we will invite our senior girls to deliver the blankets in behalf of all the young women from our stake. * * ACTIVITIES We will have both a zip-line and a rappel set-up for the week. Both are among the favorite activities up at camp. Archery will also be offered as one of the activities. "May the odds be ever in your favor." :) Last year our theme was Step-Up, based around different dance styles. One of our daily activities was morning Zumba! Both the Young Women and Leaders seemed to love it! During dinner, on the last night of camp (when all the Stake Leaders, Bishops and their spouses were visiting), there was a flash mob! The girls were on fire as they performed the Zumba routine they had learned and practiced during the week. It was quite the unifying experience. Our dance instructor, among others, were overcome with emotion. It was a great activity we will do again this year - hopefully with a nautical twist. :) * GAMES * We always have board games available, just in case there is rain. I am thinking these are good choices for this year's theme: * Battleship Board Game A classic! * Ocean Bingo I happen to have this one in my game closet. If you're interested in one for yourself, you can purchase it here. :) * MESSAGES IN A BOTTLE Friendship Notes/Secret Sisters/Love Notes... whatever you may call it. What is camp without notes left on pillows? This year to go along with the nautical theme we are calling it "Messages In A Bottle". We are going to have bottle shaped die-cuts available for everyone to write little notes to each other throughout the week of camp. * I was thinking we could have a large tin sitting just inside the craft cabin with everything the girls need to write their messages. A large tin bucket filled with sand, to place pens in - pens topped with sailboat sails. A smaller tin bucket, buried in the sand, to place the die-cut paper bottles in. For fun we could place in the sand an actual bottle with a rolled up message in it. I found this wine bottle template here. I thought it might be a good pattern for our bottles. Wide enough, giving more room for messages. free pdf download here. * ALL CAMP NIGHT ACTIVITY idea Each cabin to have their own anthem/song. One which inspires and goes along with the theme. This could be something the cabin counselors have their girls practice before camp - or possibly on their own with a CD. They could use the song as part of their nightly cabin devotionals. Here are a few song ideas: Hold Your Torches High, Jenny Phillips/Tyler Castleton - sheet music Like a Lighthouse, Michael Webb - download sheet music Lighthouse in the Night, Jenny Phillips - sheet music Light On A Hill, Jenny Phillips - YouTube music video The Lord Is My Light - Hymn #89 This Little Light of Mine - I love this version! (listen below) by Addison Road On the night of the all camp night activity, have everyone gather together into one area, sitting in a circle, as cabins. In turn, each cabin will sing their song, while holding up their flashlights and/or lanterns. Then, everyone will sing the camp theme song in unison, with all the flashlights and/or lanterns held high. * SEA OF INSPIRATION more to come :) * NAUTICAL THEMED CRAFT ideas Bottle Cap Pennants Designed by the talented Janey Wilding. * Sea Glass Pennants Created by the talented Janey Wilding. * DIY Nautical Stripe Yarn Bracelets found here * Created by the talented Janey Wilding. * Nautical Inspired Nails This would be a fun station for the girls! idea found here * Nautical Inspired Mason Jar Lantern Created by the talented Janey Wilding. These are being filled with sand, small shells, and a tea light. Topped with lid - also with scripture printed on it. * DIY Lighthouse Lanterns tutorial here * Starfish Headband Adorable! Looks simple enough. An elastic headband. A couple mini starfish. And a glue gun. * DIY Hand-Stitched Anchor Keychain A square of felt, needle and thread. The girls could practice their sewing skills. :) idea found here * Sailor Knot Bracelet tutorial found here * Compass Ring idea found here The girls could make a simple version using ring blanks and mini compasses, like the ones found here. * DIY Nautical Headband tutorial here We will be making a yarn version of this headband. yarn tutorial found here. * Stamped Quote "My Port In The Storm" We will have washers (and possibly dog tags) available for the girls to stamp. Always a hit! * Shipwreck Aluminum Cuff Ring found here made using an aluminum ring blank tutorial found here * Painted Mason Jar Lantern Created by the talented Janey Wilding. This isn't nautical inspired, but it is cute. :) YW logo was created by placing a vinyl image (Cricut or Silhouette) onto the glass. Next spray the entire jar with spray paint, then remove the vinyl image. Simply tie it up with ribbon and place a tea light inside. * PERSONAL PROGRESS The young women will also have opportunities to work on their Personal Progress during the week at camp. More info to come... :) * DECOR ideas Nautical, Lighthouses, Sea Shells, * Wish Fish idea found here Something like this would be cute hanging above the doors of each cabin. The girls could each create a fish and add it to the line. Or you could have fish in the value colors, hanging near the Personal Progress area. * Nautical Flags photo found here Maritime Flags Font Download - it's free! I would love to create a banner spelling out the theme in nautical flags. The girls may even have fun writing messages to each other in nautical flag drawings. They would have to visit the Activities/Craft Cabin for both writing their letters and decoding. :) * Shark Head made from Recycled Fence found here Wouldn't this be fun to have on the mess hall door?

The Salt Path by Raynor Winn An uplifting true story of a couple who lost everything and embarked on a journey of salvation across the windswept South West coastline of the UK. __________________ Just days after Raynor learns that Moth, her husband of 32 years, is terminally ill, their home is taken away and they lose their livelihood. With nothing left and little time, they make the brave and impulsive decision to walk the 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path, from Somerset to Dorset, via Devon and Cornwall. Carrying only the essentials for survival on their backs, they live wild in the ancient, weathered landscape of cliffs, sea and sky. Yet through every step, every encounter and every test along the way, their walk becomes a remarkable journey. The Salt Path is an honest and life-affirming true story of coming to terms with grief and the healing power of the natural world. Ultimately, it is a portrayal of home, and how it can be lost, rebuilt and rediscovered in the most unexpected ways.
