'The fairy' adores picnics and is always nagging me to have one. Today because of the grim weather we were looking for something fun to do when she asked to have one. I found our china tea set and table cloth (a present from Great Granny) at the back of the cupboard. We waited for a break in the rain and set up our tea party on our balcony. We brewed some blackberry tea (with cold water) Stiring Waiting for the colour to change Pouring She wanted to add some flowers. The tea was not only a beautiful pink colour but smelled fruity too and the flowers added a tactile element. Very sensory! Then the rain came so we decamped indoors. At which point 'The fairy' decided we needed snacks, a chocolate dinosaur, shiny cake and a bun with a cherry on the top were on the menu! I decided that pink tea, pouring and cream carpets didn't mix so swapped the 'tea' for clear water. This activity was great for imagination, developing her concentration and role play and well as linking in with her new found fascination with things changing colour (see the Easter biscuits we made at the weekend). Language Focus Vocabulary: stir, pour, tip, drink (if your not using flowers in the water!), names of food and crockery Play skills: Role play is an important stage of development and helps to support imagination and language development. Learning about animals in winter is such a fun topic of study. This hibernation preschool pack is filled with hands-on math, literacy, and writing centers. Hibernation Preschool Theme Hibernation Subitizing- Match each chipmunk number card to the correct numbered tree. Bear Patterns- Grab your bear counters and build and extend each pattern. Bear Counting- Count and cover each color of dot. Write the the total number with dry erase marker. Fine Motor Groundhog Counting- Attach a pipe cleaner to each groundhog. Count and string beads onto the pipe cleaner. Cave Sticky Wall- I used contact paper (sticky side out) and my little guy matched our foam letters to the letters I wrote on the cave. Bat Letter Match- Say the letter on the bat wing. Write (or place a letter tile) on the other bat wing. Groundhog Count and Trace- Count pom poms onto the ten frame, then trace each number. Bear Cave Flip and Cover- Flip over a bear card, identify the number, cover the number on the cave. Hibernation Tracing Lines- Use a dry erase marker to trace each line. This is easily adaptable for sight words, numbers, shapes, or colors! Frogs in the Mud- We used brown paper shred as the base and threw in the alphabet cards. Pick a card, say the letter, and then trace the letter on the recording page. Feed the Groundhog- Cut a hole in the mouth of the groundhog. Attach the groundhog to a box. Feed the groundhog each letter. Polar Bear Sounds- Match each letter to that picture with that beginning sound. Hibernation Writing Tray- Trace each letter in a writing tray of salt or coffee grounds. Bear Shape Matching- Match each shape bear to the same shape cave. So, after YEARS of reading about Jodi's Teddy Bear Day, I finally did it! It was so fun! All the kids loved it! I will definitely be doing it next year. Although, since it was my first time, I will be tweaking some things, for sure. So... This particular day, I happened to wake up with absolutely NO voice!! That was great. Luckily, I had a parent that had offered to come in and help the day before. I wasn't going to have anyone come in, but sure! I can always use help, right!?? THANKFULLY I did, because she read the Teddy Bears' Picnic to the class for me - and the other book, I happened to have on CD, so we just listened to that one...so my other Teddy Bear books did not get read that day. Oh well. Then we did our Teddy Bear Adjective chart. And put together our folder... Most of the activities come from Jodi's Teddy Bear Day pack, but I added some other ideas too... like the directed drawing page. This one comes from THIS book. My kids are really into the drawing activities this year. I'm so glad!! In the box under the step by step, they drew and measured their bears. On the page to the left, we drew it again and labeled the parts of a bear. My parent volunteer did the Teddy Bear Math activities. So glad - because I would NOT have been able to talk to all my groups and do this activity with them. Some didn't have teddy bears, so they brought whatever animal they did have....this dinosaur is so fitting for his owner. lol Later on in the day we compared real bears to teddy bears. I would have read a book first, BUT I had no voice. And I wanted to do a science experiment with Gummy Bears, but I didn't have a voice, so I skipped that and we just did the Estimation Station. Oh Nelly, we've got a long way to go with estimating - hahaha. So that was Teddy Bear Day. We did it during our Little Red Hen week, AND a 4-Day week. Oy! What a week! It was so fun though. Definitely give it a try! Even if you have Kindergarten or TK that does it - because I guarantee, it won't be the same, and the kids will love to do it again.
