Expanding the traditional tarot archetypes beyond the gender binary, this deck re-imagines the cards from a queer and inclusive perspective. The more we work with Tarot, the more we realize that binaries don't exist and everything is fluid-gender, meaning, even time. We come to realize that we're all creatures made of earth and air, fire and water, all four elements bound together by the fifth element: spirit. Fifth Spirit Tarot goes beyond the gender binary, queering the archetypes with 78 beautifully illustrated and hand-lettered cards by queer and non-binary tarot reader, teacher, and writer Charlie Claire Burgess. The artwork lovingly features folks of different races, body shapes, abilities, ages, and gender expressions. Instead of renaming the cards for gender-neutrality, Fifth Spirit seeks to challenge the gender binary and expand notions of gender through the juxtaposition of traditional title and queered imagery. In Tarot as in life, a nonbinary femme can be King, a cisgender man can be Queen, and everyone in between can defy or expand or ecstatically embody any or no gender that they wish.
We’re all familiar with the “Communist aesthetic”—its bold graphics, hyperrealism, and often stark color schemes. Less familiar is the tender side of this ideology. Limited time 20% discount Please note: This is the first edition indie version of the Fifth Spirit Tarot. This is a deck I keep being drawn back to again and again. The Deck A queer and inclusive deck for a world beyond binaries We contain all the archetypes—every single one of us. We all have some Empress and Emperor, some Queen and King. We all go through phases of Death and phases of The Fool and phases of The Sun. The more we work with Tarot, the more we realise that binaries don’t exist and everything is fluid—gender, meaning, even time. We come to realise that we’re all creatures made of earth and air, fire and water, all four elements bound together by the fifth element: spirit. That's the inspiration for Fifth Spirit Tarot. Fifth Spirit seeks to expand the archetypes beyond the gender binary and reflect the diversity and divinity of human bodies and human spirits. The artwork lovingly features folks of different races, body shapes, abilities, ages, and gender expressions, and special care was given to leave the cards open to interpretation for various relationship styles and family groups. The Creator Fifth Spirit Tarot is created by Charlie Claire Burgess (they/them), a queer and non-binary tarot reader, educator, illustrator, writer, podcaster, and witch. Charlie says: "I believe in making the transformative tool of tarot accessible to as many people as possible, and my work specifically centers queer, trans, non-binary, and other LGBTQIA+ folks. In all of my offerings, I seek to provide trauma-informed spiritual tools and resources for the modern age that foster personal empowerment and healing for the individual and the collective." You can find them on their website or Instagram. Those of us calling for an inclusive feminism aren't the ones being "divisive." But those of us refusing to acknowledge the need for intersectionality in feminism are.
