If we really live in a simulation, we may as well get our cheat codes ready. Because it ain't exactly like Sims, but it's not Solitaire either.
Researchers calculate that it would take more computing power and storage than actually exists to create a digital reality.
This is kinda spooky.
If you’ve ever caught yourself wondering whether we are living in a simulation, well, this selection of images might make you uneasy. Some glitches that happen in real life look straight out of a video game, a movie, or a bad render.
Launch learning into body systems in this engaging simulation to observe the spread of disease, such as a virus, and explore why some individuals become infected and fall ill, others become infected and remain asymptomatic, and some go on unscathed. After engaging in the hands-on whole-class simulation, students obtain information from a web video to discover the basics of how the immune system works in preparation for further unit activities that explore how the body is a system of interacting subsystems made of cells (MS-LS1-3). Learning Targets: Students will simulate disease transmission. (Activity 1) Students will generate ideas about how diseases spread and how the body protects itself from disease. (Activity 1) Students will ask questions to clarify and seek additional information about the spread of disease and the role of the body in protecting individuals from disease. (Activity 1) Students will communicate information about the immune system obtained from a video to describe its role in defending the body from invaders. (Activity 2) Students will describe how the immune system works with other body systems to defend the body against invaders. (Activity 2) This lesson includes: 2 student pages detailed teacher lesson guide (10 pages) answer keys How can this lesson be used? spark student interest in human body systems develop an understanding of how disease spreads explore the role of vaccination in public health and infectious disease management briefly introduce the immune system in order to understand how it responds to exposure to pathogens How much class time will this take? This lesson is designed to be completed in one to two 75 minute class periods. Is this NGSS-aligned? This resource is part of a storyline designed to work toward the tagged Next Generation Science Standards. Because Performance Expectations are designed to assess learning by the end of the grade band, unit material may not fully assess every Performance Expectation tagged in the post. Explore the complete Body Wars unit here or access through the Spark Subscription. This activity works toward student mastery of the Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science and Engineering Practices, and/or Crosscutting Concepts in the tagged Performance Expectations. This activity engages students in the following Science and Engineering Practices: Asking Questions and Defining Problems Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information This activity encourages students to think about the following Crosscutting Concepts: Cause and Effect Prior Knowledge: This activity is designed to launch the third instructional sequence in the middle school unit storyline, Body Invaders (see links below). This sequence addresses the body’s systems and subsystems made of cells as described in MS-LS1-3. In the complete unit, students have already explored the characteristics of living things, identified the cell as the basic unit of life, and discovered the structures within the cell that support its healthy functioning. That said, students can engage in this activity without an understanding of cells and cell structure. Can I see an example of how you structure your lessons and student materials?
