Gorges, also known as canyons, are deep ravines found between cliffs. They are formed from the landscape after being carved by rivers which naturally reach a baseline elevation, creating these stunning natural visuals in the process. Canyons are pretty common in arid areas due to the effect that physical weathering has in such zones. The word ‘canyon’ has a Spanish origin with many being found in the United States while Europeans prefer to use the term "gorge".

Behold the captivating beauty and raw power of Gullfoss Waterfall, one of Iceland's most beloved natural wonders. This anime-style cartoony travel poster brings to life the majestic Hvítá river canyon, where pristine water from the Langjökull glacier rushes and cascades, creating a breathtaking display of nature's grandeur. With two stages of cascades, the shorter standing at 11 meters and the second drop at 21 meters, surrounded by towering canyon walls that plunge into the magnificent Gullfossgjúfur canyon. Geologists believe this awe-inspiring gorge was formed by ancient glacial outbursts. Witness the mighty surge of water, with up to 140 cubic meters per second in summer and 109 cubic meters per second in winter, drenching the surroundings in a glorious spray. Gullfoss is an essential stop on the Golden Circle sightseeing route, where visitors can explore the geothermal wonders of the Geysir area and Þingvellir National Park. This is a truly unique hike, unlike any other. Wade through a river, which varies in depth depending on the time of year...the river is the trail! Oneonta Gorge is one of those hidden treasures that you just have to see to believe. Tucked away within the stunning Columbia River Gorge (which is a natural wonder all on its own), this magical creek might be one of America's most beautiful hikes. It was a miner '49er named Carleton Eugene Watkins, originally on the West Coast for the California gold rush, who first photographed the area, and he was the one who gave the gorge its name-- he called it "Oneonta" after his hometown of Oneonta, New York. Just fair warning-- if you do plan on hiking through the enchanting gorge, be prepared to get wet; at times the stream itself is the actual trail, taking you past enormus basalt walls covered in emerald green moss and bubbling, sparkling waterfalls. The lower gorge is a protected habitat for the rares lichens and ferns and wildlife, hence the need to walk upstream through the creek. There are four major waterfalls along the gorge (Upper Oneonta Falls, Middle Oneonta Falls, Lower Oneonta Falls and the triple falls), so the hike, which at times can be through chest-deep water, is totally worth it. If you'd rather not get wet while exploring Oneonta, don't sweat-- there are also trails and observation decks and bridges on dry land through other parts of the verdant gorge, so people of all hiking skill levels can experience it for themselves. - Roadtrippers The Oneonta Gorge is in the Columbia River Gorge in the state of Oregon. The U.S. Forest Service has designated it as a botanical area because of the unique aquatic and woodland plants that grow there. The basalt walls are home to a wide variety of ferns, mosses, hepatics and lichens, many of which grow only in the Columbia River Gorge. Oneonta Creek runs through the gorge. There are four major waterfalls on the creek. Middle Oneonta Falls can be seen clearly from a footpath and is very often mistaken for the upper or lower falls. The lower gorge has been preserved as a natural habitat, so there is no boardwalk or footpath through it as such. Thus, Lower Oneonta Falls can only be seen by walking upstream from the creek's outlet at the Historic Columbia River Highway. To get to a vantage point where the entire lower falls is visible can require wading through water that in some places can be chest-deep, depending on the season and the relative amount of snow-melt. The upper falls are about 1 mile upstream from the middle falls and require scrambling up the creek or climbing down a canyon wall to view. The fourth falls which is "Triple falls" can be seen from a vantage point on the upper trails in the canyon. The Oneonta Gorge was first photographed by Carleton Emmons Watkins, a native of Oneonta, New York, who had traveled west during the time of California Gold Rush of 1849. Watkins named the Oneonta Falls after his hometown.

Hells Canyon Wilderness is a wilderness area within the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Hells Canyon is the deepest river gorge in North America and it was established back in 1975. The wilderness covers 217,927 acres. There are 39 named mountains in Hells Canyon Wilderness. The highest and the most prominent mountain is She Devil at 9,406 feet. Major Trails and Hiking Areas Mirror Lake Trail Cuddy Mountain She Devil Major Cities Tri-Cities Spokane Boise There are over 360 miles of trails within the wilderness. Some trails follow old roads while others climb ridges and traverse the slopes. Because the region is a designated wilderness area, no motorized or mechanized vehicles are allowed. Despite the wilderness existing primarily in Oregon, the vegetation varies from the western part of the state. Hells Canyon Wilderness is characterized by sagebrush, prickly pear cactus and bunchgrass. Wildlife is similar to other parts of the state, including black bear, cougar, elk, deer, mountain goat, and recent sighting of wolverines. There are three National Wild and Scenic Rivers that run through the wilderness; the Snake, Imnaha, and Rapid Rivers. The Snake river runs through the wilderness for 67 miles with sections known for white water rafting. The Imnaha River has 77 miles within the wilderness while the Rapid River has 26.8 miles. The Rapid River is home to chinook salmon, steelhead, and bull trout. Major Trails and Hiking Areas Mirror Lake Trail As one of the most popular hikes in the wilderness, this route is 1.6 miles out and back with 885 feet of elevation gain. The route starts at the Seven Devils Campground and climbs steadily through the forest and rock cliffs before arriving at the lake. Cuddy Mountain The hike to the top of Cuddy Mountain is 7.5-miles out and back with 2,864 feet of elevation gain. The steep climb takes you through sections of forests and open viewpoints. From the top of Cuddy Mountain are views of both western Idaho and eastern Oregon with the Blue Mountains in the distance and She Devil. She Devil As the tallest peak in the wilderness, the summit of She Devil offers expansive panoramic views of the Hells Canyon Wilderness. There are multiple trails leading to the summit though the most common approach to the peak is from Sheep Lake. Much of the trail from the lake requires scrambling over loose rocks. Major Cities Tri-Cities The Tri-Cities, includes three closely linked cities; Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland. The cities are situated where the Yakima, Snake, and Columbia rivers meet. Situated about two hours northwest of the Eagle Cap Wilderness, the area has been historically based on farming and the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Farming has been popular due to the irrigation from the three conjoining rivers. The area is home to seven river-front parks that are popular among locals and tourists alike. Spokane Located four hours north of the Hells Canyon Wilderness, Spokane is the most populous city in eastern Washington. The Spokane river runs through the city while it sits 92 miles south of the Canada-U.S. border. With a population of 222,000, Spokane is the second largest city within the state of Washington. While most of the state’s population lives on the western side of the Cascade Mountain Range, Spokane is a hidden gem for any outdoor enthusiast. There are four ski resorts within two hours of downtown, while rock climbing, hiking, running, rafting, canoeing, and fishing are all accessible within minutes. Boise Four hours east of the Malheur National Forest sits Boise. The city of Boise is the capital of the state of Idaho and the most populous city in the state. Situated on the Boise River, the city is 41 miles east of the Oregon border and 110 miles north of the Nevada border. The Boise metropolitan area contains the state’s three most populous cities; Boise, Nampa, and Meridian with a total population of 710,000. The city is known as “The City of Trees” and the downtown area is full of shops and local dining options. The town is home to numerous recreational opportunities which include hiking and biking. Boise is also home to the Boise River Greenbelt which is an extensive urban trail system along the Boise River.
