Watanabe Shotei was a versatile artist and artisan of the Japanese Meiji era. At an early age he had the possibility to exhibit Japan's arts and crafts as a team member of Shibata Zeshin for the Paris World Exhibition of 1878. Later he travelled to Europe and the United States to study Western art and to exhibit Japanese arts and crafts outside of Japan.

THE ARTIST Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was a prominent Japanese artist renowned for his mastery of woodblock prints, particularly landscapes. Born in Tokyo, Hasui initially trained in Western-style painting before transitioning to woodblock printing under the guidance of master printmaker Kaburagi Kiyokata. Hasui Kawase was born May 18, 1883 with the given name Bunjiro in Shiba, Tokyo as the son of a merchant family. As a child Hasui learned to paint in Western style. His first teacher was Saburosuke Okada who taught him watercolor and oil painting. Hasui Kawase is one of the great masters of the shin hanga movement. Shortly before his death, he was declared a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government.
