This addition to 5 practice set is BOTH a printable packet AND a TpT Digital Activity in one product. It will help your children to develop fluency in adding numbers to 5. If you choose the digital version, I have created answer boxes on every page, so you can just select pages for your students and assign them to Google Drive. This set covers the following Common Core standard: CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.5 Fluently add and subtract within 5. Use this set to differentiate to meet your all students' needs. It features three scaffolded levels that each contain both horizontal and vertical problems. 1. Children look at illustrations that match the equations. 2. They color pictures to match the equations. 3. They complete addition problems with no pictures. I recommend using this as part of your math program--For daily practice, for assessments, and for homework. You may want to cut pages, eg, in thirds, to use for quick addition drills. Use it in conjunction with other games, activities, and songs. ***You can save on this product when you purchase it as part of my Kindergarten Addition and Subtraction Practice Bundle, available here. Here is a quick worksheet we created to test student knowledge on text features. The passage is on deserts, and the worksheet asks students to label what text features can used by this article. In my school, it was used as a practice for a non-fiction common core unit. It can also be used as an embedded task. There is a word bank. Features used are title, caption, map, illustration, subheading, and keywords. I also want to give credit to Window to the Universe. (A great resource!) I am teaching my students next week how to use a Thesaurus. I wanted to show them the book and explain how it is used and do some modeling for them. If you teach 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade more than likely you have to teach your students to understand elements of fiction that go beyond just identifying the characters, setting, and plot of a story. If you really want to help your students understand fiction texts, then you need to dig deep into the elements of fiction. These elements of fiction anchor charts and posters will help your students remember all the key story elements and as an added bonus these posters are a great addition to an interactive reading notebook. This set of anchor charts will be your teacher bestie when it comes to teaching elements of fiction. These posters provide a student-firiendly definition and explanation of a key element of fiction. With the help of these posters, your students will remember and understand the key elements of fiction. And let’s be honest…sometimes teaching reading in upper elementary can be challenging even for teachers. There are so many vocabulary terms and details associated with understanding fiction texts from knowing the difference between a protagonist and antagonist to understanding the four types of conflict to knowing how to communicate tone and mood. There is a lot of information that even teachers need to research and study before teaching a lesson. Having a ready-to-print anchor chart that explains and defines key elements of fiction terms to help us our students can be a huge lifesaver. These anchor charts will take the guesswork out of your teaching and serve as the backbone to your unit on the elements of fiction. HERE’S WHAT YOU GET: In this resource, you’ll get 17 Elements of Fiction Anchor Charts formatted in the following ways: Half-page anchor charts - perfect for students journals (black & white and color options) Full page anchor charts - works great for whole group lessons (black & white and color options) Digital version - created using Google Slides FIll-in version - available for both the half-page and full-page versions and are great if you want your students to take notes during the lesson LOVED BY BOTH TEACHERS AND STUDENTS: Your students will love having access to these anchor charts during the year. They won’t feel the pressure to remember all the different vocabulary terms connected to understanding fiction texts because they know they can look back in their journals anytime they need a reminder. You’ll love these anchor charts because they have easy-to-read font and are written with clear and concise language. Your students will understand all the elements of fiction with these anchor charts. So many upper elementary teachers love these anchor charts because they aren’t cluttered with excess clipart or fonts that are too “cutesy”. And, you have options. You can choose to print them in half pages for students to glue in their journals… or you can share them with your students in Google Classroom… or you can give students the fill-in version so they can take notes during your lessons. You can pick the version that will work for you and your students. Prep is quick and easy... Just print the anchor chart option you want to use before your lesson and you’re ready to go. ANCHOR CHART TITLES INCLUDE: Elements of Fiction Setting Protagonist vs. Antagonist Types of Characters Character Analysis Problem & Solution Types of Conflict Plot Structure Exposition Conflict Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution Dialogue Flashbacks & Foreshadowing Tone & Mood HOW TO USE THESE CHARTS IN YOUR CLASSROOM: Use as a model for your whole group lessons. Give students a copy to glue in their journals. Send home a copy to parents to keep them informed. Include a copy with your lesson plans to show your administrators what you’re teaching. Put posters on a ring or in a binder as a reference for small groups or workstations. TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “These are great anchor charts and I love the many options for printing. My favorite thing about teaching is knowing that I'm doing important work each and every day. I teach because I want to make the world a better place. One of the most powerful tools we have at our disposal to create a positive environment is the language we use. On day two of my Responsive Classroom training we spent a good portion of the day discussing the power of our words. Almost everyone in the class (myself included) started to realize they'd developed some bad language habits in dealing with students. To help myself remember some of the key questions and sentence frames we learned to make our language more positive and effective, I made these little signs. You are welcome to use them. Clicking on any of these pictures will take you to the document. The thing discussed about reinforcing language that was the most challenging for us was to take out the mention of teacher approval or of student names. In other words, avoid phrases like, "I like the way Justin is sitting quietly." Instead, use phrases like, "I see lots of students sitting quietly so we can begin learning. The difference here is that in the first example, students are behaving to please the teacher. In the second example, students are behaving for the good of the group. This is a collect of questions, vocabulary, story grammar, and a final, cumulative writing piece (including various outlines to meet the needs of all of the learners in your classroom) for the book, Look Both Ways by Jason Reynolds. I have used it, very successfully, in my classroom to reach all kinds of learners. I use this close reading unit for Look Both Ways, specifically, to bridge my readers from answering largely literal questions about their reading to more inferential questions. Many of my students have special needs and need to be provided with guidelines as they write about literature, so you will see reminders about sentence structure. I have used these questions for Look Both Ways with my special needs readers as well as will my very typical readers and gifted students. There are questions regarding figurative language, pre-reading assignments, and chapter-by-chapter vocabulary included as well. Also included is story grammar. I use story grammar in my classroom when I want to review/strengthen writing skills such as sentence building but also incorporate text comprehension. Look Both Ways is a wonderful collection of ten short stories by Jason Reynolds that will leave a lasting impression on your readers. You never know when a school bus might fall from the sky! All the best stories start that way. In this one, however, no one saw it, they were all too busy going about their daily lives. They were too busy talking about boogers, stealing pocket change, skateboarding, wiping out, becoming brave, executing complicated handshakes, planning escapes, cracking jokes, getting greased up, and walking home. Jason Reynolds tells ten wonderful short stories, one per block, in order to show readers what happens after the last bell rings at school. He shows us what happens as we take detours on our way home. All of your readers will relate to this book! ** During this time when we are out of school and engaging with our students online and in a distance learning capacity, you may distribute my products to you students using the internet (but not in a way so that they are available to EVERYONE on the internet) Ex: Google Classroom is fine!** Please feel free to message me with questions, and don't forget to leave feedback...it's like free TPT money!

This classroom management poster uses a classroom strategy that has students try to solve the problem in three different ways before asking the teacher. 3 Before Me encourages students to think independently and then collaboratively before reaching out to the teacher. The 3 Before Me strategy builds problem solving skills in your students and helps to keep teacher frustration to a minimum by avoiding hearing the same question (that you probably just answered) over and over again. Have you tried task cards with your students? Task cards are a fantastic way to reinforce lessons, review difficult concepts, or provide extra practice for the struggling student. The student reads each card, performs the task, and records his/her answer on an answer sheet, on notebook paper, or in their lab notebook. There are many ways to use the task cards. As seen in the photo above, punch a hole in the corner and place them on a ring. Hang them on a pegboard for use throughout the year. When reviewing for tests or exams, students can select the set of cards from the pegboard for the topic that needs the most review. Set up a practice/review session by setting the cards up in a lab practical style. Place one card at each station and have the students rotate through the stations until all stations have been completed. My students love this format since it allows them to move about the room. The task cards in this format are a great way to give a quiz or test. Use the cards in a game format. Divide the class into teams. Place the task cards face down in a basket. A team selects a card at random and must complete the task for a point. Students can use a set of task cards in small groups and orally review one another for a unit test. The task cards seen in the photo above are on the scientific method. The face of science teaching is changing. Common Core Science Standards, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards, are asking teachers to emphasis scientific concepts, rather than the memorization of large amounts of factual data. Instrumental to these new standards is teaching the student how to design and implement an experiment of their own. The first step in teaching the student-designed experiment is to provide the student with a complete and thorough understanding of the scientific method. Most of the students entering my biology classes at the beginning of the school year can (in a very bored and monotone voice) recite the steps to the scientific method. What we as teachers need to insure is that the student can actually APPLY the scientific method. Can the student read a passage and determine the independent and the dependent variables in the experiment? Can the student identify the control and explain WHY it is the control? Can the student look at a set of data and draw a logical conclusion? Can the student design and implement an experiment? The printable task cards are perfect for traditional classroom settings, and the paperless, digital Google Apps version is perfect for distance learning and 1:1 classrooms. I have a free PowerPoint and set of notes that you can use as a starting point in your teaching of the scientific method. This free product can be viewed and downloaded here. Once your instruction is complete, you might want to give these task cards a try. I most often use the cards in a lab practical format. Students rotate through the various stations and complete the task at each. The set includes 45 task cards. Some of the "tasks" include: Writing a hypothesis. Distinguishing between the experimental and control groups Identifying the independent and dependent variables. Drawing a conclusion based on given data. Be sure to follow up your lessons on the scientific method by having your students design and implement an experiment of their own. You can check out my blog post on student designed experiments by clicking here. Thanks for stopping by!

Kim Shankman, Benedictine College I have students write their name (the way they want to be addressed, formal or nickname) on an index card the first day of class. I use these to take attendance, but more importantly, I shuffle the cards and use them as my method for choosing
