Wanna see a cool trick? I hate wrapping something and then having to stick something on top and I figured out how to make a cute little candy wrapper using any punch. These measurements are for the Hershey's nuggets. I took a piece of DSP 4 1/2 inches wide. Fold in half so it is 2 1/4 inch wide- in this picture, the fold is on the left. The height of each piece is 1 1/4 inches. Cut to the dimensions shown later here. (picture order got screwed up- sorry!) The width of the band depends on the height of the punch because you have to slide it in to punch it out. This is what it looks like after you cut the corners. I took a long piece and cut a bunch of them at the same time to save time making multiples. Slide the folded band sideways into the punch the pull out the band through the punch as shown. If the belly band is too fat, it is hard to pull through the other side of the punch like this. Then punch the butterfly using only one side of the punch. It is better to to the right of the fold than to the left- if it is too tight, it will tear as you try to put it together. When you unfold it should look like this. Now the mechanism: Cut a slit on one of the butterflies from the top half way, and the other one from the bottom half way as shown with the pencil mark. So you slide the one butterfly over the other as shown. Here is the completed band- or a little ring- or whatever. Slide in the nugget and a cute little party favor! This is the dimension of the folded piece with the fold to the right. If you are using thicker cardstock, leave a smidgeon more room because it will not bend as well. T You can do the same with any punch. This was the bat punch using the same idea. Thinner belly band to squeeze into the punch as shown. When you unfold and put a little slit halfway - one from the top, another from the bottom and voila! a bat candy treat! I was trying to make a point about how easy this was so I used a copy paper with the blossom punch. Folded it in half to figure out the diameter of item you want to wrap and the left over becomes the part that you punch. Used the Blossom punch to punch the flower, cut slits on opposite ends to tie it on. It thought it would make a lovely disposable napkin rings for a wedding or any event. What do you think? Lynda

It's my turn to come up with an idea for the month of May for Imagine @ do.Good Stitches charity bee. I have loved the card trick block ever since I first started quilting 16 years ago. I actually pulled out my Singer's Quilting Bible (circa 1997...whew...getting old here) and lo and behold? I still had the quilt block marked! However, I have different sizes planned then the ones in the book. One 12" block and one 9" block! Hopefully, my bee friends won't curse me like they were when they were paper piecing their blocks for Imagination! I plan to share it as a free quilt pattern in the very near future. In the meantime, I will share the tutorial for both blocks. Shuffle The Deck Quilt Free Quilt Pattern .pdf download will come in the near future. Hopefully, I can replace the image below with the real thing in June with all the blocks my bee comrades have won! 12" Card Trick Block {Tutorial} Unfinished 12.5" blocks IMPORTANT: Fabric Choices. I recommend high contrast or value fabrics for this block. Each “card” will stand out more effectively while overlapping. Too low of contrast will cause them to blend more. For the sake of the bee quilt, I am requesting white backgrounds, but I think this would be an amazing quilt with a low volume background print! 1. Cut one 5 1/4" square fabric each of background and four "card" fabrics. A total of five squares. 2. Cut two 4 7/8" square fabric of background and one of each four "card" fabrics. A total of six squares. 3. Cut through the larger squares (5 1/4") twice diagonally to make four sets of triangles. 4. Cut through the smaller squares (4 7/8") once diagonally to make two sets of triangles. Note: the photo below is missing the second background triangle. It fell on the floor when I was taking photos *blush* 5. Layout your triangle to create the overlapping square effect. Use this photo as a guide. Note: You will have two small triangles of each card fabric leftover. Keep them for a future project. I'm planning on using these on the back of the quilt (flying geese?) Stitch your triangles together. Chain-stitching can be your friend. 6. Start with the larger triangles in the corners. Stitch the background triangles to the card triangles. 7. Stitch the marked triangles. Stitch the smaller triangles first. Then stitch the pieced triangle to the larger triangle. 8. Stitch the center block. Stitch two small blocks and then the piece triangles together. 9. Press your triangles and trim off your points. 10. Assemble each row. Then each row to each other. 11. Press block. 9" Card Trick Block {Tutorial} Unfinished 9.5" block Optional sashed block for an unfinished 12.5" block Note: Fabric Choices. I decided to do blocks to show that sometimes your fabric choices might be similar. The pink in this selection has orange and can read orange when cut into triangles. In this case, make sure that the two fabrics are not adjacent to each other and use your other fabrics to have your high contrast! 1. Cut one 4 1/4" square fabric each of background fabric and four "card" fabrics. A total of five squares. 2. Cut two 3 7/8" square fabric of background fabric and one of each four "card" fabrics. A total of six squares Optional Sashing: For the purpose of my quilt design there is sashing to take the 9" block to 12" 3. Cut two 2" x 9.5" strips from background fabric. 4. Cut two 2" x 12.5" from background fabric. 5. Repeat steps 3 through 11 from the 12" block tutorial to have a complete 9" block. The layout is the exact same, just smaller pieces! Optional: Once you have pressed the block, add the 2 short background strips (2"x 9.5") to each side of the 9" card block. Press the seams. I have been on a roller coaster ride for the last week around here. I had mentioned that my dad was having his second knee replacement surgery. Well we thought everything was going fine and they sent him home after lunch on Saturday. Around 7 p.m. he was running a high fever and was advised to go to the Emergency Room. As anyone who's ever gone to the ER knows, it will NOT be a fast trip. LOL Well, the fever became the least of our worries because he went in to an irregular heart rhythm. They ended up putting him in ICU and he's still there. The cardio doc says it's nothing life threatening, but obviously needs to be brought under control. Weekends aren't the best time to get lots of answers from the doctors so hopefully we'll know more today. I'd appreciate it if you would keep him and us in your prayers. One of the comments on my "Watchin' the Flutterby's" card last week was a request to show how to do the Out of the Box technique. There are lots of great tutorials out there on this technique, but since several of you asked for more tutorials I figured I'd throw my own version into the lot. This is a very simple technique that can really add a lot of interest to your card. So here we go. 1. Supplies. You'll need your stamped image, a die, scissors, and a pencil. 2. Place your die, cutting side up, over your image and decide where you'd like it to be. Placing the die cutting side up will make it a bit easier to judge where your cutting line will fall. 3. With your pencil, lightly trace along the inside edge of the die next to the parts that will be sticking out. You can trace along the whole inside circle, but it's not necessary. 4. Here's what you'll have after the tracing. 5. Remember, the line you just traced is NOT the cutting line. You're die will cut a little less than an 1/8" further out from the drawn line. In the photo you'll see that I penciled in a dotted line roughly an 1/8" out from my first line. This isn't necessary, but it sure helps you to cut more precisely. The arrows indicate where you will start cutting in. It's necessary to cut straight in or you will have a visible cut line in your image edge. 6. This photo show everywhere that I have determined I will need to cut. 7. Time to cut! If you follow the arrow down to the dotted line you should have an invisible cutting line when finished. Simply continue cutting until you reach your original traced line. That's as far in as you want or need to go. 8. Once you've made all your cuts you'll be able to slip the die under the cut outs and line it back up perfectly with your inside pencil marks. Make sure your die is now cutting side down. 9. Run the image and die through your cutting machine. 10. This is what you will end up with and then all you have to do is finish trimming around the hair and paw. 11. You'll end up with a trimmed, ready to use image with some parts sticking Out of the Box errrr....circle. hee hee Hope this was helpful. Have a great week!

I don't know about you but I have tons of paper pad scraps in my collection. Today I'm sharing a trend and tutorial over at the TSG blog as part of my Trendsetter of the week hosting duties. Starburst or sunburst patterns on cards and scrapbooking pages are pretty hot right now. I've used it for this cute pup from the "Puppy Love" set for my card. The technique may look complicated but is pretty simple and there are several ways you can use in on a card. Just Google under either starburst or sunburst card and you'll see what I mean. For my card I started with four 1.5" x 6" strips cut from my leftovers. Each one of those strip was cut at a diagonal from corner to corner. You will also need a base for assembling. Just grab a simple piece of copy paper. I cut mine a little smaller than A2 size because I knew I was going to mat it, but if you want it to cover the whole front of your card cut it to that size. Next you're going to start assembling the pattern. I knew I was going to be adding a circle to the bottom left corner for my image so I traced the outside of my die so I could make sure everything else was completely covered with the strips. I used a Two-way Glue pen to add a spot of glue just to help keep my pieces in place until I had them like I wanted them. You can use whatever kind of adhesive you like. I'm a liquid glue girl because of the humidity here in the south. I used my brayer to get a nice smooth attachment. Once all the pieces were glued down I trimmed the piece to get rid of the excess hangover. Pop it on your card base and embellish as you want. I added stitching to all my panels just cause I love to stitch on my cards, but it looks great either way.
