Although my daughter's birthday was a few weeks ago, we were finally able to celebrate over the weekend. It was a two-part affair, made up of a sleepover with a few friends one night and family get-together the next night. For the sleepover, we kept things super simple and unstructured. I didn't plan a lot of activities, and the girls really enjoyed just hanging out! Since I was saving her cake for the family party, I made a fun cookie "cake" for her friends with simple sugar cookie dough, the alphabet cookie cutters that we used to use for play-doh, and icing. Once the icing hardened over night, I was able to stack the cookies on a tray for a cute presentation. Just for fun, I picked up some water shooters at Dollar Tree, and they had a blast filling them from buckets in the back yard and squirting each other. I also got some glow necklaces and bracelets that made a late-night movie a bit more festive. The next morning, I did plan a little craft activity for the girls to work on. I bought some frames (also at Dollar Tree), pulled out a variety of craft supplies that I had on hand, and let them have free reign decorating them. The night before I had taken their picture all together and had it printed at the 1-hour photo shop, so when they finished their decorating, we popped the photo in and they had a sweet favor to take home. I always make my kids' cakes, and while they are nowhere near perfect, we always have fun coming up with different designs, usually centered around their interests at the time of their birthday (previous girl's cakes here and here, and boy's cakes here and here). This year my daughter turned 12, and we didn't come up with a themed cake, but ended up decorating with her favorite colors. I stumbled across color coated Sixlets in the cake decorating section at Wal-mart and thought they would be a cute accent. I used this recipe for the frosting this time, and it was delicious! The cake itself is a 4 layer made in 8" pans, and they always want the box funfetti mix... easy enough! For an easy topper, I used some scrap paper, letter stickers, and wooden skewers. Everyone ate everything up, and both parties were a fun success! I hope this gave you a few practical party ideas that won't break the bank... *Contains affiliate links

Quinn's 7th (!!!) birthday was back in November (!!!). She had her heart set on a party + sleepover with her two best friends, specifically a reptile-themed party, so we made it happen. She's been fascinated with reptiles for months & would check out books about snakes from the school library every week. We signed her up for a membership to our local nature conservation lab for reptiles & amphibians, which she visits frequently. I shouldn't have been surprised when she requested a reptile-themed birthday. Me: "How about mermaids?" Quinn: "Reptiles." Me: "Unicorns? Llamas?" Quinn: "REPTILES." Me: "Good talk." So we set about gathering ideas for a reptile party. I didn't stress about the details being Pinterest-worthy or Pinterest fails ๐ Quinn was the mastermind of this party, taking part in everything from DIY to decorating to the food prep to figuring out the party favors. I was her willing minion who operated the hot glue gun & gently nixed ideas that were too grand ("Let's give live lizards as party favors!") She & her friends had a total blast, stayed up way too late, woke up way too early, & dived into donuts for breakfast. How sweet is this age?! The sweetest. The balloon garland snake ended up looking like a bunch of green grapes with eyes & we laughed so hard. โ in progress โ This age & how they form friendship bonds make my heart explode with little heart emojis ๐ Crafts & jammies time. The girls painted & decorated wooden wiggle snakes...... ....and each created a reptile "habitat". There was also a dance party, movie & popcorn time, & a stealthy balloon attack (thanks, girls). The girls went home with favor bags that resembled those live cargo shipping crates. Quinn filled each of the bags with sequin-changing slap bracelets (they remind her of reptile "scales"), gummy snakes (ok, worms), plastic lizards, & ombre clip-on mermaid hair (because why not). Party pieces I used: plastic "habitat" jars | faux palm stems | fruit tape "snakes" We gave Quinn a leopard gecko for her birthday & she's been taking great care of Ray the Gecko.๐ Happy Sssseventh Birthday to our darling & daring girl! The Skullette, play on 'skull' and 'silhouette', is one of the two symbols of Monster High and incorporated in most versions of the other symbol, which is the crest of Monster High. She is the counterpart of Brooke Page of Ever After High, although while there's the only one is Brooke Page, there are different versions of the Skullette. A large portion of the Monster High merchandise features the Skullette or one of its variations somewhere in the design. Some items even are in the form of the S

It's always a pleasure to work with a super creative parent on any party. This past Saturday, we helped style a cute rock star themed birthday party for a little girl who was turning five. The mom had been planning on this party theme for a year. She had picked up the fun banners on clearance that coordinated with the whole theme of the event. Thrift stores also became excellent sources to pick up more party items. Like the fun cassette background to the cupcake table. Which was actually a duvet cover. The pillowcase was used as part of the centerpiece for the kid table. The pink polka dot table cover that the mom used for the cupcake table was another sheet. Cardboard paper amps were also thrift store finds. Vinyl records were placed on our glass cake stands and glittery purple ribbon created the perfect serving trays. Tying coordinating purple ribbon around the popcorn scoop dressed it up. The mom made a fun birthday sign which she placed in a black frame, as well as a coordinating number 5 which she placed above the cupcake table. We supplied the drum set, amp, mic and mic stand, guitar, and tambourines to help set the stage for this rocking fifth birthday party. The mom hung twinkle lights behind two black sheets and a silver tablecloth which she was able to pick up on clearance from Christmas! Feather boas, sparkly microphones, and fun glasses not only were great party favors, but also served as great photo props for when the kids sang up on the "stage". The birthday girl's mom made the cupcake wrappers and picked up cute colorful cupcakes from Sam's Club. We made star sugar cookies and iced them with edible glitter that the mom had also made. Tutorials can be found on the internet for making edible glitter. A simple recipe that consists of sugar, food coloring, and baking. A fun activity for the kids that attended was decorating their own guitar using magic markers and glitter glue. Yes, our creative mom painstakingly cut out twenty of those cardboard guitars herself. We provided the black glitter stars for the guitars.
