In Sanskrit, sama = equal, vritti = rotation/flow,. Sama Vritti Pranayama is part of the yoga practice that teaches one to breath in four steps. This kind of breathing in English is called the Square Breathing or sometimes called Four Parts Even Breathing. Our bodies breath in air subconsciously and one is not connected with this kind of breathing. But with the practice of yoga and specifically pranayama, the introduction of Square Breathing plays an important role, as it teaches you to be aware of the prana flow. In general, one breathes in and out using the diaphragm and abdomen. This movement of in and out of the air is happening without you being aware, and may also be wrong. Hence with Square Breathing, the flow of prana (energy) is taught under pranayama that moves in and out of our bodies in four steps. The four steps or the breathing cycle is given below: Puraka (Inhalation) Antar Kumbhaka (Retention after Inhalation) Rechaka (Exhalation) Bahya Kumbhaka (Retention after Exhalation) The art of moving and controlling the breath following the above cycle or rotation is called sama-vritti. In all the above 4 steps of the cycle the breathing time is same, and hence the name ‘sama.’ This technique of pranayama emphasizes equal in all.
