This week I tried something new with the vocabulary in the story. I got the idea at a First Grade Conference in December. The student writes the vocabulary word in the middle of the sheet and then there are four things to do with the word. We completed two of the boxes together as a class and they finished the last two boxes independently. The kiddos sure had a great grasp of the vocabulary after this. When we read the story they had fantastic comprehension.
“Hey kids, it’s time to practice our new vocabulary words.” Can you hear the moans and groans?Practicing vocabulary is boring (according to kids) but when you add in dice, it becomes a game! I call it Roll a Word! It’s easy peasy to implement! For each vocabulary students roll a die. The number they […]

As a conclusion to our Snowville, we made Ice-cream in a Bag by measuring and combining all of the directions. Try this at home with your parents and see if you can follow the directions to make delicious ice-cream. Ingredients: Ice cubes 1 cup of half and half 1/2 cup Kosher salt 2 Tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 pint size ziplock bag 1 gallon size ziplock bag Directions: Combine half and half, sugar, and vanilla in pint-size bag. Seal bag tightly (do not want it to leak) Fill gallon-size ziplock bag halfway with ice cubes. Sprinkle Kosher salt over ice cubes. Insert pint-size bag with ingredients into bag with ice and salt. Seal gallon-size bag. Shake bag for 5-10 minutes until the ice-cream mixture begins to harden. Take small bag out of ice and open. Enjoy!

Have paparazzi ever hankered to take a picture of a poltergeist or a mummy and sell it to the apropos tycoon? Loanwords are words found in the English language (and in the English dictionary!) that have been taken verbatim from another language. In the sentence above, paparazzi, hanker, poltergeist, mummy, apropos, and tycoon are what are known as "loanwords". These words come from Italian, Dutch, German, Arabic, Japanese, or French and appear in our modern English language! This 28-page collection of printable worksheets exposes your students to 125 common and important loanwords from six languages in six different printables, gives them the meaning of each, and requires them to choose the context sentence they belong in while doing a reading exercise. Answers are provided. **Note: This collection combines 6 items that are sold separately in my store. If you do not wish to purchase doubles of an item, read the description carefully and compare with the individual products in my store. You will save off the individual prices for each printable when purchasing this as a bundled collection. After the worksheets comes a final assessment on 36 of the most important loanwords. (I require students to prepare for all 125 words without knowing which ones are coming. They can do it). Students show they have learned the loanwords by completing context sentences with the correct word just as they have been practicing in the printables. Answers are provided. If you want to see if this bundled collection is for you please download the FREE Preview, which is the full version of the final assessment, and take a look at the format and the loanwords. BONUS: An additional document was added to the end of the PDF as requested by several teachers. This is a printable lesson on 25 Spanish words that have been borrowed into English, assessment work to go with it, as well as a quiz on these words.

Instead of hanging your words on a word wall, place them on the floor instead. (You may want to laminate them.) Instruct students to stand in a large circle. Scatter the word cards throughout the middle of the circle. Have the students move in a circle motion while repeating this chant twice: WORD STOMP, WORD STOMP WHAT SHALL I STOMP? WORD STOMP, WORD STOMP WHAT SHALL I STOMP? After the students say the chant twice, the teacher interjects: WORD STOMP, WORD STOMP "MADDIE, GO AHEAD A STOMP" Maddie would then move to the middle of the circle and STOMP on and off a word. After she stomps off, the students yell out the word. Maddie returns the the circle and the game repeats. This is a great way to create movement in the classroom, which brain research shows movement increases achievement. I know your students will ask to play this AGAIN and AGAIN. --------------------------- Word Cheers and Disco Words --------------------------- Word Wall Wheel of Fortune Activity --------------------------- You may also like these resources from our TpT store: Click HERE for spring word cards.
