I just got pictures from our New Beginnings program for our young women group. It was such a fun night! We had a Survivor theme. (My friend Jen was the mastermind behind the theme). When the young women and parents arrived we split them up into teams (8 teams for each of the 8 values), and they each got a strip of fabric in their value color to tie around their arm. We talked about how the Young Women program and Personal Progress program will help the young women "survive" their teenage years and prepare them for the great things ahead. One of my counselors made these cute programs and took the time to burn all the edges. We introduced cute Taylor who will be turning twelve this year and joining us. We gave her a "survival kit" with things she'll need in the YW program. Each of our young women talked about a Personal Progress value by reading the value scripture and talking about how that particular value was important in their lives. (We have a small group of young women, so everyone got to participate). That was definitely the highlight of the night! After each girl talked about her value, she added her value box to the totem pole. And then we talked about how the totem pole represented the strong core of faith that will come from living by these values. In between the girls' testimonies of each value, we had "challenge" questions that everyone completed with their team. Examples of challenge questions are "Who can approve a value project?", "How many hours should each value project take to complete?", "What is the new website for tracking Personal Progress online?". I think it was a fun way to go over some of these details with the girls and their parents. Refreshments were chocolate cupcakes with crushed oreos and gummy worms on top. Very Survivor-ish, right? This was such an awesome night to celebrate our girls and the Young Women program. I love serving with the young women!

Let me begin by saying I believe we ALL have varying degrees of empathic and catalytic qualities. The work here at Openhand draws people from both ends of the spectrum in equal measure. It often occurs to me that in the group work, each is reflecting to the other. Perhaps then, there are some things someone with more empathic qualities can learn about their gift from someone with more catalytic ones? (and vice versa). Perhaps, for example, there's something a "catalyst" naturally does, which is inherent to their nature, that an "empath" can also develop? And perhaps by opening to more empathic qualities, a "catalyst" can have a more sensitive effect on the field? That's the purpose of this exploration I invite you to join...

If asked who is my favorite Abstract Expressionist painter, I'd probably usually answer Franz Kline (1910-1962). That's because he was bold rather than subtle, and I seem to retain a child-like preference for boldness over subtlety (I make exceptions, of course). Poor Kline didn't quite make it to his 52nd birthday thanks to his bad heart. But from a strictly artistic-legacy point of view, his personal tragedy was possibly beneficial. That is, I'm not sure that he would have continued what he had been doing decades after Abstract Expressionism began running out of steam and fashion around the time of his death. What would he have done that would have been as aesthetically and commercially successful? I'm not sure Kline's earlier painting would offer any clues, but I present some below as food for thought. They were grabbed off the Internet from here and there and I can't be absolutely certain that all of them were actually done by Kline. It's possible that there were misleading captions or misattributions, but this is hard to judge because Kline's early work is neither distinctive nor well-known.
