The CCTV tower in Beijing China is headquarters of the state-run Chinese broadcasting network. One of the most contentious projects completed in the past several years, the building was often described as part of a huge public relations campaign ramping up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, signalling the Chinese nation's rise on the world stage, and (possibly) a future with a more transparent Chinese state, including it's "propaganda organ," the CCTV. "Mr. Koolhaas, of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, has always been interested in making buildings that expose the conflicting energies at work in society... At moments monumental and combative, at others strangely elusive, almost retiring, it is one of the most beguiling and powerful works I’ve seen in a lifetime of looking at architecture." A public portion of the building was intended as a "loop" circling up one tower, across the massive 75 m cantilver, and down the other tower - providing previously unthinkable views and access to the state media network. Unfortunately, the building is in reality (as of mid 2012) publicly inaccessible - instead of the restaurants, viewing areas and exhibition spaces planned, the building is encircled by tall fences - workers were installing security cameras around the perimeter during my visit in May 2012. VILLAGES IN THE SUN Mediterranean Community Architecture by Myron Goldfinger, published by Lund Humphries [1969] Mykonos, Greece Alberobello, Italy - each trullo exisits of a square or rectangular base topped by a conical dry stone roof with a chalk-coated finial. The domes' interiors are whitewashed for good light reflection. Post-Byzantine churches of the Aegean islands Takrouna, Tunisia - built by the Berbers, the use of stone for both walls and vaulting is in response to the local scarcity of wood and for maximum protection against heat and cold: a thick coat of white stucco reflects sunlight and reduces wind infiltration.
