Teaching the elements of art to elementary school children can be a rewarding and challenging experience for educators. The elements of art are the building blocks that form the foundation of visual arts. These elements include line, shape, form, space, texture, value, and color. Understanding and mastering these elements can help children create beautiful and meaningful art.
This was by far the toughest exploration of the semester, but also the most fulfilling. I improved and learned so much just through this "seemingly" simple exercise. I found that I struggled with the more simple principles, like repetition; I struggled to find solutions to make the compositions make sense, but still graphically interesting. Another principle I really struggled with was rhythm - how does one show rhythm without sound? I think my favorite principle to play with is positive negative space. I love layering and splicing simple shapes to create interesting relationships. Points were my favorite element to work with. Planes were especially difficult for me; I had gotten used to working within the limitation of just using one shape! But like I said, this was definitely the most rewarding assignment to complete. Figuring out where to even start is a huge stress and will require a tea (or a beer) and a nap (probably some Netflix too).
When I first started teaching, I didn’t quite know how to approach the drama section of our art curriculum. We would do a few skits, occasionally play a version of Bus Stop where one kid had to make another laugh, and call it a day. I wanted to breathe some life into our drama activities and make things fun again. Improv games were a perfect fit!
