The Scott Cao Da Salo is a remake of the viola made by Gasparo da Salò. Gaspar's violas are known for being easy to play while having a full bodied tone with strong projection. Aesthetically, the Da Salo is unique as it has fleur-de-lis pattern on the top and bottom of the one-piece back. This instrument is ideal for both orchestral & ensemble work, but can stand alone as a solo instrument with it's strong projection. Please note: This item is an old stock display model. It was briefly stored in an area with poor humidity levels and the instrument has suffered some cracks as a result. The largest crack is under the chinrest and there are some small finish cracks on the back near the neck. The cracks are on the surface only and have been sealed to prevent further damage. Modeled on the pattern of the great 16th century Brescian luthier, Gasparo da Salo. Gasparo's violas are considered among the best ever created, preferred by many to even Stradivari's, because of their dark, penetrating tone. With great projection and power, the Wang Gasparo viola is also surprisingly agile and responsive. Purfling is doubled around the edges, with decorative flair on the back, typical of the early Baroque style. 15", 15 1/2", 16", and 16 1/2" sizes.
