Travel posters are an ever-popular aspect of graphic design. I thought I would feature a broad spectrum of posters from the first half of the C20th, the golden age of the travel poster probably being associated with the 1920s and 1930s with posters by artists like Roger Broders, featuring sunny Mediterranean scenes. This is part 2 of an 8 - part post on vintage travel posters. For earlier works see part 1. Leslie Ragan Posters Leslie Ragan was born in 1897 and grew up in Iowa, USA. Ragan was a mostly self-taught artist, although he did the Cumming School of Art in Des Moines, Iowa. He served in the Air Force in in World War One, and upon returning studied for a single semester at the Art Institute of Chicago. In the early 1920s he went on to teach at the Academy of Fine Arts, Chicago. By 1930 he had relocated to New York and had begun painting for the New York Central Lines company. "Chicago" (1929) was Ragan's first poster for New York Central Lines. 1927 Hudson Lake poster by Leslie Ragan 1927 Indiana Dunes poster by Leslie Ragan 1927 Moonlight in Duneland poster by Leslie Ragan 1927 South Shore Line poster by Leslie Ragan 1927 The Dunes poster by Leslie Ragan 1928 Duneland Beaches poster by Leslie Ragan 1929 Chicago poster by Leslie Ragan 1930 Cleveland, Ohio poster by Leslie Ragan 1934 Holiday Haunts poster by Leslie Ragan 1934 Hudson River poster by leslie Ragan 1934 Niagara Falls poster by Leslie Ragan 1934 West Point poster by Leslie Ragan 1935 Cincinnati poster by Leslie Ragan 1935 New York poster by Leslie Ragan 1936 Rockefeller Center poster by Leslie Ragan 1938 The New 20th Century Limited poster by Leslie Ragan 1941 The New Empire State Express poster by Leslie Ragan 1943 We Shall Not Fail poster by Leslie Ragan 1946 New York Central System poster by Leslie Ragan 1947 Highlands of the Hudson poster by Leslie Ragan Roger Broders Posters Roger Broders (1883 Paris - 1953 Paris) was a French illustrator and was considered the best travel poster artist of his era. His posters are highly sought after and command higher prices than many of his contemporaries. Broders designed stylish images of fashionable resorts of the 1920s and 30s, which are now the most collectable. His use of bright colours and fashionable type fonts created a strong visual impression and would seem to represent the epitome of the modern travel poster. 1922 Simplon-Orient-Express poster by Roger Broders 1925 Menton poster by Roger Broders 1928-32 Le Hohwald poster by Roger Broders 1929c Winter Sports poster by Roger Broders 1930 Monte-Carlo poster by Roger Broders 1930c Dunkerque poster by Roger Broders 1930c Golden Mountain Pullman Express poster by Roger Broders 1930c Winter Sports poster by Roger Broders 1930s Grenoble poster by Roger Broders 1931c Cote d'Azur poster by Roger Broders 1932 Bandol poster by Roger Broders Antibes poster by Roger Broders Corsica poster by Roger Broders Marseille poster by Roger Broders Monaco, Monte-Carlo poster by Roger Broders Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean poster by Roger Broders Sainte-Maxime, France poster by Roger Broders The Rhine poster by Roger Broders Vichy poster by Roger Broders Villard de Lans poster by Roger Broders Villers sur Mer poster by Roger Broders Visit India poster by Roger Broders * * * * * 1930c Col de Bacella, Corsica poster by Cossard 1930c Italian Lakes 1930c Mont - Daint - Michel poster by L. Tintagel Castle ruins with the controversial bridge which quite frankly looks cool and saves your legs! SHOP * For more of my designs, please visit my shop... www.etsy.com/uk/shop/jennifercooperdesign PRINT INFORMATION * I print onto 300gsm silk art paper. * Designed, printed and framed in the UK 🇬🇧 PACKAGING * The print will be wrapped in biodegradable cellophane and then carefully wrapped to protect it in the post. The cellophane I use is made from potato starch! It looks the same as plastic but will biodegrade within 6 months in a compost bin! Please dispose of it in your kitchen caddy compost bin. Then pat yourself on the back for being awesome. * You may notice that items arrive in packaging for other brands. This is because I always try to recycle packaging where I can. If your item arrives with bubble wrap, please recycle appropriately. FRAMES * If you are ordering a frame, please note that there is a 10 day lead time as the frames are made to order. * A4 overall frame size approximately 47cm x 37cm * A2 overall frame size approximately 76.2cm x 59.9cm MOUNTS * An A4 mounted print will require a 14x11" frame A3 PRINTS * A3 is no longer a size I keep in stock, some designs are still available whilst stock lasts. * Any of the designs can be printed in A3 as a bespoke order. DELIVERY AND INTERNATIONAL ORDERS * Items are posted within 2 working days of receiving the order. If there is going to be a delay, then I will always let you know. If its a Special Delivery order then I will aim to get it into the post as quickly as possible. * Orders are sent by Royal Mail 2nd Class and require a signature. * Please select the Special Delivery option for next day delivery. * Framed prints are usually sent via UPS. * International orders are usually sent via UPS. Any taxes and duties will need to be paid for by the recipient on receiving the parcel. Parcel costs vary depending on size and destination so I will create a bespoke shipping quote for you. Please email me if you’d like more information. LOOKING AFTER YOUR PRODUCT * When you receive your print, take lots of care when unpacking it. If the print comes in a tube, it will have been rolled in biodegradable ‘plastic’ to protect it. Gently pull the edge of the wrapping to remove the print from the tube. Try to minimise handling the print until you’re ready to display it. * I use a small sticker to seal the cellophane or rolled print. Take care not to let the print touch the sticker as this may cause damage to the print. * Keep your print out of direct sunlight. The sun will fade the colours in time. * The print should not be kept anywhere that is damp. * If you order a framed print, then always hold the frame by the picture string on the reverse, rather than the edges of the frame. * The frames I use have glass rather than acrylic plastic so take lots of care when handling them. * If you are framing the print yourself, always make sure you have clean dry hands and a flat surface. Try not to handle the print too much. Make sure there are no flecks of dust on the glass. * I hope that you are really happy with your print, but if for some reason you are not then please do get in touch and we can try to find a solution. If we can’t find a solution, then I will ask you to return the item in it’s original packaging and the same condition it was sent out in, within 14 days of the order date. Remember to include your order number with the item and I recommend it’s posted by Recorded Delivery. I won’t be able to process a refund if the item is lost in the post. RETURNS AND CANCELLATIONS * If the item arrives damaged then please get in touch. I will ask you to email me some photos of the item and the packaging it arrived in. I can then either arrange a full refund or a replacement at no extra cost. * If the order hasn’t arrived within a reasonable time, please let me know and I will arrange a replacement. * I cannot accept returns on framed or personalised prints as these are both made to order. * I am unable to refund the postage costs for returns. FINALLY.... Enjoy your print! Lots of love, Jennifer x
There is something about lighthouses that appeals to an elemental part of our makeup. Perhaps it’s the idea of strength and resilience that is so relevant in our challenging times or maybe it’s just a childlike fascination with tall towers and spiral staircases. This collection gathers together the over 80 lighthouses that dot our coastline.
