Times are a-changing and nowadays it is easy to take our ability to vote for granted. However, it's really not that long ago since our grandmothers and great-grandmothers had to go through some serious abuse to win that right.

Hello and Happy Monday! It is the beginning of a new week and I am excited to have a few things checked off my To Do list... you know, the non essential to do list. First of all, I finished those dining room chairs that I begged Mr. Hughes for: I painted them a light, light grey and added a little more cushion... you know... for our bottoms *wink* You will be pleased to know they are no longer stuffed with crunchy horsehair. Then, I covered them in a charcoal grey linen. I wanted a fun pattern to play off the pattern in our draperies, but in the end, I really ended up liking the solid. It matches the ribbon on the draperies and also the face of my vintage clock. Then I did this quick and easy project by following Ashley Ann's simple steps: So easy! baby hughes says they are snowflakes (and you know I love snowflakes) so maybe I will put them away until Christmas. But, for now I will enjoy them. As for the finish on the chairs...hmm... where do I start? Well, let's just say that I was less than happy with a certain big name company that produces primer. I tried a new formula. It seems to have clashed with the paint that I always use. In short, the paint never dried in some areas. That has never happened (part of it is the lovely heat and humidity that we are having, I am sure.) And I had painted 3 chairs. So, what to do? Do I strip and repaint the 3 and not use the primer on any of them or do I paint the remaining ones with the primer and hope to get the same results? At this point, I had taken sandpaper and a drywall trowel to them. And, I was sort of digging the look. So I went with it. And it looks pretty authentic.... like layers and layers of paint had been worn down by years instead of my vengeful hands. I call it "Accidentally Authentic." And if you want me to recreate this finish for you, there will be an upcharge *wink* And, since the dining room is once again finished (for now!) I thought I would show you what it looked like almost 5 years ago soon after we moved in... And now, from a slightly different camera view... We have changed the chairs and the draperies and have taken some things down and put some up. That wall color will remain though. I always love change, but that is the one wall color in the house that hasn't been up for change in all the time we have lived here. Okay, kids, I have to get some invites out for someone's 3rd birthday. Oh, and I read that book on my to do list too! check, check, check!! bye for now!

On Mondays post I got a few questions on how to tie a 40s headscarf, Rosie the Riveter style. So thanks to Twila Jean we got some pictures today to show you how. It's insanely easy, and great for lazy hair days, wearing over pin curls, or a fast 40s look! You'll need a medium to large cotton headscarf. Silk is ok but slippery, so use with caution. Fold it in half diagonally so you have a triangle. Place the scarf over your shoulders, shawl style, with the point facing down. Take the two ends on your shoulders... ...and tie them once on top of your head. Pull the point of the scarf up to the top of your head and stuff your hair in the little pouch created. Lay the point over the tied area. Tie a knot over the point. Tuck the open sections in, and the ties if you want. Ta da!

Hello my friends, with Christmas over many of us are starting to think Valentines. Although I am not ready to start pulling out the Valentines décor, I am ready to do a bit of creating. It's been quite a while since I did a 'Treasures and Trinkets Tuesday' post. I thought this project fit the bill. You might remember that last year I was helping with the estate of my friends late Aunt. We held 8 estate sales total and still haven't emptied the house. We will probably pick it back up this spring. While sorting through all of her treasures we saved some of the jewelry and tossed it into a large tin. This photo was actually taken after we had created three hearts. We were so busy having fun that I forgot to take photos. :) Julie and Dolly rode up last Thursday and spent the night. We thought we would create hearts with all of that treasured jewelry I actually took photos earlier today, when the lighting was good. I realized that my SD card was not in all the way and none of them took. So here's my second go around. They are not as good, and I didn't do as many. We used frames that we already had. I chose a smaller one because I have a lot of large framed things I use for Valentines. We removed the back and sprayed it with Elmer's spray glue. Then we laid it on a piece of drop cloth I had left over from a project. We did not cut the piece to fit perfectly, because I wanted to lie them onto my cutting mat and make a nice clean cut with my rotary cutter. Fold a piece of paper in half and draw half of a heart. Cut out with scissors. Center it on your backing. We measured to make sure we had it exact. Then trace around it lightly with pencil. Now the fun begins! We started laying out jewelry pieces. Julie and Dolly laid out their entire heart before gluing any of it down. Me, not being the patient one; laid out 5-6 pieces and then cut the backs off and glued them down. We just used hot glue. Either way works. They did say that when they went to glue they did not get it to fit exactly as they had it laid out. Be creative and have fun playing with those gorgeous jewels! I wanted quite a bit of aqua in mine. Notice we added small pearls to fill in some of the gaps. So many pretties! We used wire cutters to cut off the backs so that they would lay flat. Some of them were easy, while others were a bit difficult. I didn't mind the void space behind this pretty flower pin. In fact, I laid a few pearls inside and decided that it took away from it. I cut one end off a watch and used the other to frame the top of the heart on one side. I really did center my heart on my background. But I used a piece on the bottom that hung down quite a ways. It didn't bother me, in fact I loved the look! Notice the space on the side of the aqua pin? You only see it from the side, but I've decided that I will tuck more pearls in there. Now, here's another look at the finished project. . . This is my sister Julie's. Love how she framed the top of her heart with bling! and my friend, Dolly's. So many fun pieces of jewelry! The chippy frame is one that I had made with a crackle product years ago. Both Julie and I painted our frames with white chalk paint and sanded them. They turned out so pretty that I think I will hang mine in my sewing room after Valentines. What do you think? Is this something you would try making? hugs, I will be sharing with these fun parties: Talk of the Town Keep in Touch Vintage Charm Share the Love link party
