Nice radio with a thick plastic cabinet in two shades of blue (dark/ligth) and loss carry strap. Dial cover reversed painted with a transparent window and large transparent dial knob. At the top of the dial cover still has the sticker that indicates the location of station "RADIO MIL" (XEOY 1000), which remains to this day with mexican music programming and promotion of tourism in Mexican Republic. I remember in the 60's , that promoters of different radio stations visited homes so you allowed them to place stickers on the dials of radios to quickly locate the station that promoted. Chassis with 6 transistors HITACHI and large metal tuner variable condenser.

Here we have the second transistor radio released by Sharp (Hayakawa Electric Co., Ltd.) in mid 1957. This model sported the nickname "Peppy" in a Sharp ad from the summer of 1957. Methinks Sharp was taking the term "pet name" a bit too literally . ;-) ** ** ** ** ** ** A complete entry on this model will eventually appear on my site, including chassis pics, a bit of history, and more stories of spicy pet names.
An ad by Admiral from 1942 featured the futuristic moderne styled "radio" as proposed by Marx. The image at the bottom left shows the unit when closed and not in use, while the central image offers a vision of a multimedia future with radio, television and turntable all in one unit. Advertisement for a "Radio of the Future" designed by Samuel Marx. The streamlined design with emphatic horizontals, rounded edges and clear lucite supports must have seemed an unreal vision to many Americans in those difficult days of World War II. As far as I know, the design never went beyond this concept drawing. It's interesting that Marx is depicted hard at work at a drafting table with two titles: "Industrial Designer" and "Architect". The position of the designer in society was still in flux at the time and the concept of an industrial designer still relatively new. What sort of background should an industrial designer have? Zenith's Bakelight "Radio Nurse" of 1937 designed by Isamu Noguchi must have set a precedent that Admiral would have liked to follow. Noguchi's design was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in the "design" category, but such work would not be viewed as being considered in a category on a level with "art" for many years to come. Should he have thought about his design work differently? Truetone was the house brand for radio, television and electronics products sold by Western Auto Supply Company of Kansas City, Missouri.
The radio swings open to its two halves. One side provides access to the battery compartment and the other sides provides space for a photo. The radio was available in white, yellow and lavender.
Model Number by Case Color: 211 = Black Case, 212 = Coral Case & 213 = Ice Blue Case.
The crown is missing from the top of the watch stem.
Made in Japan, Circa 1960. This one is much smaller than the other AT radios I have in the National range. That and the very cute arrow and square oval dial shape make this an attractive little radio.
