I am stopping in today to make a post my March goal so I can join A Lovely Year of Finishes for this month - today is the last day to do so over with Shanna at Fiber of All Sorts and Melissa at Sew BitterSweet Designs. Those blocks are for my next Cycles quilt, Snowfall - made from the Oakshott Italy line and a bunch of solids from cotton and linen. I am going to finish this quilt this month as I already have the next quilt in the series in my head. I need three more blocks I think and then I can get started on the matchstick quilting, using my new long arm machine. It should be fun and I cannot wait to see if matchstick quilting on a larger quilt is any easier on the long arm than on my regular machine. Good Morning Farm lovers! We are moving right along with our Farm Girl Fridays and we are already into week 19! So grab your book and let's get started on the blocks for this week:) To get a copy of your own... CLICK HERE Turn to page 62 and let's talk about my Spring Star Block It's an easy block to construct and I like that it has three color combos to play with:) A perfect choice for scrappy happiness. I used my "County Fair" Mix and Match Setting on page 112 to make a fun little quilt using twelve 6" Spring Stars:) Even though these two quilts are the exact same setting... they look completely different because I used the same background fabric throughout the entire Spring Star quilt instead of using scrappy fabrics for the borders like in the Milking Day quilt. I LOVE how this cute little quilt turned out and I think that the red gingham binding adds the perfect Farm Girl Vintage touch! I love the addition of the Spring Star in the sampler quilt on the cover of the book... you can never have too many star blocks in a sampler! Speaking of star blocks... let's move on to our next block Simple Star Block on page 61 of the book. I have talked about this block already in a few of my previous posts but this week is finally it's turn to shine even more! I used my "Picnic" Mix and Match setting to make this summer quilt. I dug into my scrappy stash of blues, aquas, reds, pinks and whites for this one:) I love the Picnic mix and match setting because it uses both the 12" and 6" block sizes... and looks great with other quilts! A farm girl can never have too many quilts so let's talk about one more to add to the pile! Remember when I did this farm girl block mash up using my Crops block and my Sunny Sunflower block? Well...for my Farm Girl Vintage Retreats/Workshops I always design a few Farm Girl Vintage companion blocks for my students to play with. I designed a few more flowers to go on the top of my crops block. Poppies and Tulips! I think they look great with the Sunny Sunflowers and makes for a super cute Farm Girl Vintage Flower bouquet:) I designed 3 different variations of my "Poppy" block... and 3 different variations of my Tulips block. Both in 6" and 12" sizes of course:) These are some of the 12" sizes and I made them into a runner using the Harvest Table runner setting on page 124. Then I made even more Farm Girl Vintage Flowers ( 12" blocks ) because they are so addicting! Then I made 4 of Farm Girl Vintage Flowers in the 6"size blocks for a fun pillow:) (click here to get seam guide) I'm not kidding when I said these are addicting to make. I just can't stop sewing them! I love flower blocks so much and in my opinion... there should be lots of flowers on my farm:) And as usual... these blocks are an amazing way to use your scrappy stash because the color combos in the Farm Girl Vintage Flowers are endless. Welsh and Durham quilts are very different in many respects -I hope to take you through some of these differences. However, bear in mind that these are only generalisations, and of course there are always exceptions. Firstly, the quilts were made in different geographical areas. "Durham " quilts should more properly be termed North Country quilts, as they were made in the counties of Northumberland, Durham and Yorkshire. This is an area of Carboniferous Coal Measures, and there were numerous mining communities in this area, along with other industries fuelled by the coal. There was also farming taking place in the countryside. Welsh quilts were of course made in Wales, especially in South Wales. Again, coal measures are to be found here and there were many mining communities here as well, together with many other mining, chemical and industrial works. Wool and sheep rearing was another major source of income as much of the land is too mountanous for arable farming. Due to the cultural differences and the geographical separation, each area had its own styles of quilting. Patchwork, applique and wool quilts were made, but I shall be illustrating the differences with the wholecloth quilts which the areas became famous for. Durham quilts became well known for their impressive quilting designs - usually a large and elaborate centre design with flat irons, roses, feathers, leaves, ferns and much curlicue infill. This was surrounded by an area of infill and then an outer border. Another example of a Durham quilt with a large centre motif of feathers. This Weardale quilt has a feather wreath and a central rose. Feathers were common in Durham quilts and running feather motifs were very common. Wadding in these quilts is usually of cotton. By contrast, Welsh quilts usually had a central motif, either a circular "coin" or a diamond. This central area was enclosed by double or triple lines to form a "field". Fans or other motifs echoed the centre coin, and spirals were used as filling devices. A further one, two or three borders, also enclosed by double or triple lines, surrounded the central field. Common border motifs include leaves, spirals, church windows, tulips and many geometrical designs. But feathers were not to be found on these quilts. Leaves and spirals were very common motifs on Welsh quilts. The wool wadding made the designs stand out well in relief. Chevrons, fans and twists were well liked...the fields were marked in chalk when the quilt was in the frame, then templates were used for the major motifs, with the rest being marked in freehand. Strippy quilts were found in both areas but can easily be told apart. Durham strippies had quilting designs which followed the strips, with border motifs being used up each strip. These strippy quilts were economical to make in fabric, easy to seam together and also easy to mark in the frame. These were the everyday quilts, although this example is especially finely worked and was a wedding gift. Seen here are a running feather pattern and a scroll and daisy pattern. Strips were generally narrower than the Welsh strippies. This Welsh strippy has wider strips than its Durham counterpart, and it is fillled with wool rather than cotton. More importantly, the quilting does not follow the strips, rather the top is treated as a wholecloth and the usual format of central field and surrounding borders is followed. Here we can see a central field of heart motifs surrounded by tulips, pennies and leaves. Durham and Welsh quilts usually were finished with a butt or knife edge, where the edges are simply turned in and and sewn down. With Durham quilts, this was sometimes done by hand but more often it was sewn down with one or two lines of machine stitching. This gave a firm and durable edge, although it was not always carefully done! Welsh quilts usually have a handsewn edge, and one or two lines of running stitch secure the edge. Bindings are not the norm for antique British quilts, unless the edge had suffered wear and a binding had been applied to effect a repair.
May 30th is Memorial Day this year. Readying floral tributes on May 30, 1899. May 30th was the traditional day for a century or so for what used to be called Decoration Day. Decoration Day began shortly after the Civil War with local ceremonies decorating the graves of Civil War soldiers with spring flowers. Many of the veteran's associations and the ladies' auxiliary associations dedicated themselves to memorializing the war dead with parades, speeches and floral tributes. The GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) was the Union Veteran's Group that did much to promote a national decoration day, North and South. Decoration Day in New York City May 30, 1884 French soldiers joined the Americans so French flags hang from the windows near Union Square. Hanging a flag, 1914. As the generation that fought the Civil War aged, the meaning of the day changed. President William Howard Taft reviewing a parade in the teens. When America entered World War I in 1917 the name Memorial Day came into common use and the May 30th ceremonies honored soldiers who'd fought in any American wars. A poster from the 1930s In 1967 the U.S. Congress changed the official date for the officially named Memorial Day to the last Monday of May. The Uniform Holidays Bill went into effect in 1971. People in different regions celebrate the day in different ways. Many use the day to clean cemeteries, prune plants there and leave memorials to deceased friends and families. Parades and speeches honor soldiers now serving as well as veterans, and those killed in the wars. I am so excited to introduce you guys to my favorite, most meaningful quilt pattern yet, Interwoven! I designed this quilt as a gift for my husband. He's been asking for a quilt of his own for the past several years. I've been hesitant to get started on such a project because well, I wanted it to be perfect. The colors, the design, the quilting, everything! If you've seen our home decor, you'd quickly pick up the fact that we love neutrals. Little pops of color here and there are nice, but overall, I love calm and soothing color palates for the majority of our decor. Sometimes grays feel a little too cool for me, but I really love the soft and warm tone of Kona Doeskin. I'd maybe call it more of a tan gray. I paired Doeskin with Kona Snow (always my go-to white), and I knew that I wanted his quilt to contain only these two colors. When brainstorming designs, I wanted to create something timeless. Block-based patterns are nice, but I just didn't picture that kind of quilt on Peter's recliner. I wanted something with depth and movement. Something that made you stop and stare. I love geometry and playing lines and shapes this was a fun challenge for me! I played around with these lines on my computer for several months before I was happy with the overall aesthetic of the quilt. I then turned my plans into action, and I ended up loving it even more than I originally did! And most importantly, he loves it too. :) While I am a huge fan of two color quilts, I know that many of you love color and gradients. I do too, in the right context :) So I decided to introduce a fun color option for this quilt. I toyed around with how to incorporate colors into the quilt. Alternating colors between the lines was an option, but that seemed too busy and circus-like to me. I finally decided on doing a gradient across the horizontal axis of the quilt to give it a entirely different look. Not only do your eyes move with the lines, they also move as the colors fade from top to bottom. Love it! This is such a fun quilt to use with color gradients! The throw size uses eleven colors while the crib size uses nine. I suggest choosing 1-3 colors, then build your various shades from those colors.
