This is a lesson I teach every year in my Introduction to Art class. It is a project that not only teaches about contour lines, incorporating text, and balancing images, but it also teaches about the toll the Vietnam War took on the soldiers that were involved by having students create a contour line drawing of their backpack. This lesson plan is based on the lesson presented in the book: Vygotsky and Creativity: A Cultural-historical Approach to Play, Meaning Making, and the Arts. For this lesson, I read an excerpt from the book, "The Things They Carried," by Tim O'Brien while my students draw their backpacks. Once finished, the students write about the things they carry in their drawings. This lesson is a perfect way to introduce contour line drawings in a meaningful way. It includes the big idea, essential questions, goals, supplies, resources, step-by-step implementation, national art standards, national English standards, and a rubric. This lesson is a great cross-curricular assignment and can be taught in an Art or English class. This project is part of my yearlong Introduction to Art curriculum. Check it out here. Coming soon this will be a part of my semester-long Introduction to Art drawing-focused curriculum. Check out my other products here.
