I took this shot in September of 2007 as we were leaving Venice at the end of a Mediterranean cruise. I'm inserting it here – with my 1971 photos – because it provides a good view of the city as a whole. Venice has a population of about 270,000 but the majority (176,000) lives on the mainland seen here in the upper part of the photograph. The mainland is very industrial and has little historical of touristic interest. When people talk about Venice, they usually refer to the historical part of the city seen here in the middle of the photograph. Morphologically, this area is made up dozens of tiny islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. About 60,000 people live in this area but there are always more than that because the historical city is a magnet for tourists who flock here in large numbers year-round but mostly in the summer months. A couple of interesting features worth noting in this photograph: 1) The Grand Canal forms an S-shaped waterway dividing the historical city in two more or less equal parts; 2) Piazza San Marco is visible at the near end of the Grand Canal; 3) The port from where our cruise ship departed and returned can be seen at the far end of the historical city. Our cruise ship, MSC Orchestra, is the largest of the bunch (middle row, right). There is a tiny area around the port that is accessible to motor vehicles. This is also where the main parking area is located; 4) A 3.85 km causeway links the mainland with the historical city. It began as a railway bridge, built in 1836, followed by a dual carriageway road bridge built in 1932 alongside the railway bridge. The road bridge was opened by Benito Mussolini in 1933. It was first called Ponte Littorio but this was changed to Ponte della Libertà when the country got rid of the fascists at the end of WWII.
