“Old Gods” Viking Splint Greaves Etched greaves inspired by the Vendel Period Whenever they felt lost, they would look to the sky for Old Gods to guide them. Each night it brought them visions of their future journey, guiding them towards their homeland. Thought to be Aurvandil, the god that drove them on their migrations, they would travel and fight until the end of their days trying to find the one thing they all truly desired: a true home. While we do consider these to be “fantasy” greaves due to the ornate etching, this piece of armor is based on finds dating to the Vendel Period. Existing between the Iron Age and the Viking Age, it was a time of great migration, many fights and countless cities sacked and razed. We have crafted these greaves with luxury in mind, using premium materials, and the best of our design skills to create something truly special. Because there is no leather backing to these greaves, we have made the steel extra thick; the splints are cut from 2mm thick stainless steel. We've used two different splints that alternate in width to give you the best possible fit, and become wider at the top to account for the natural curve of your leg growing thicker at the calf. The thin splints are 2cm at the bottom and 2.5cm at the top, while the slightly thicker splits are 3cm at the bottom and 4cm at the top. This ensures that the greaves gracefully slope up to fit your leg while remaining nice and comfortable as well. We have also rolled the splints out sightly at the bottom to make sure they flare out and sit comfortably on top of your shoes instead of digging painfully into your ankles, which can be a risk with less well thought out renditions of this style of armor. The splints are attached together with four strips of the leather that run horizontally along the inside of them, with the splints secured with solid brass rivets. Brass rivets are structurally sound but also have the added bonus of looking amazing in contrast with the stainless steel. The etching on the Old Gods greaves is all made in-house by our product designer, who conceived the pattern after much research into viking knot work patterns and motifs. These really are an immaculately finished pair of greaves. The rivets are peened over washers at the back to ensure durability, and the robust leather straps are finished with stunning hand cast brass buckles with a viking motif. Stainless steel construction ensures that despite the ornate etching, these greaves won’t be rusting up in your armor bag any time soon. We recommend taking care of the leather if it gets damp, and simply wiping down the stainless steel with a dry cloth to keep them lustrous and shiny. Copies of an Early Viking Age buckle from Gotland Sweden. Baltic white sided dolphins are the likely inspiration for these buckles. Playful, curious and friendly, they accompany ships as they sail the Baltic Sea. Animal themes were common in Scandinavian jewelry, in the Vendel Period, 450-800 AD and were strongly influenced by Roman and Mediterranean art styles. More abstract and stylized animal designs were also common in the more familiar interlaced Viking Age 'knotwork' art styles where animal themes were included. 1. Viking Helmet “Old Gods” A stainless steel and brass helmet inspired by the Vendel Period. No matter how far they were from their homeland, Old Gods would guide them. Each evening they would stare to the sky, and each morning they would awake with visions of which way they would go and which path they should follow. Though the constant migration took a toll on them, they had trust that every city they razed and every village they conquered would bring them closer to the one place they desperately sought to find: their true home. Although it is undeniable fantasy, this masterful helmet takes loose inspiration from the Vendel Period of history. We’ve taken great creative liberty to make something unique, visually stunning, but still reminiscent of a time period. The Vendel Period is a brief time that existed between the Iron Age and the Viking Age, and marked a time of great migration. Helmets from this era were often characterised by the use of expensive materials, brass, gilding, ornamental aspects and of course bold and intimidating facial expressions. This helmet is incredibly safe. Underneath the aventail, plates extend at the front and the back to ensure you’re getting the most protection possible. 2mm stainless steel construction makes sure that this helmet can take a decent beating, with a large amount of safe padding inside. Instead of a traditional bar grill we have created an ornate, creative design reminiscent of the facial expressions you would find on a Vandal helm. The visor is cut from 5mm stainless steel, and is just as robust as any other common face plate. The face plate is also reinforced and decorated with a 1mm thick brass nose plate with some very distinct eyebrows, all securely riveted on with solid brass rivets. The dome of the helmet is made from two parts welded together, and is again reinforced with 2mm stainless steel strips for even more structural integrity. Basically every surface on this helmet is covered with some decorative aspect that will really make it stand out on the battlefield. The stainless steel top of the helmet is adorned with knot work etching and strategically placed brass rivets that look fantastic but are also functional. The nose and eyebrow pieces also have similar etching, with a combination of small and large rivets for maximum visual impact. The combination of stainless steel and brass also means that this beautiful helmet is rust resistant and much easier to take care of than mill steel, so fear not when you have a sweaty fighting practice or find yourself stuck in the rain! This helmet is finished off with careful attention to details and fine craftsmanship. Expertly placed rivets, robust leather straps, and period appropriate cast brass buckles truly give this piece a refined finish. It also comes pre-padded and ready for battle, with comfortable cotton lining around the padding, which has been executed in a period inspired method of strapping. Finally, the undeniably beautiful riveted aventail really secures this as a luxurious piece of armor. The perfect links are all secured with tiny rivets, which makes it not only much more aesthetically pleasing, but also significantly more reliable, especially compared to butted mail, which is prone to pulling apart under the blow of a weapon.
