This continues our series learning about Jesus. This is week 4 in the fourth quarter of a year of Preschool Bible Study that I assist with on Wednesday evening. This week we reviewed the Wise Men visiting Jesus and studied Jesus staying behind in the temple. The scripture is Luke 2:41-52. Mary, Joseph & Jesus live in Nazareth and Jesus is 12 years old now. As Jesus grew up, the Bible tells us He became stronger in spirit and was filled with wisdom. (Luke 2:40) Joseph & Mary went to Jerusalem every year to celebrate the Passover. The Passover was a special time of worship to remember God taking care of His people. They traveled with a group of people. When Joseph & Mary had completed their worship in the temple, they left Jerusalem to return home. But Jesus had stayed behind, and they didn’t know Jesus wasn’t with them! Mary and Joseph started looking for Jesus after a day of traveling. They asked their relatives and friends if they had seen Jesus. Mary & Joseph couldn’t find Jesus anywhere! When Mary and Joseph didn’t find Jesus, they went back to Jerusalem looking for Him. (Talk about being lost and how it would feel not knowing where their son is.) Finally, after three days of searching for Jesus, they found Him in the temple. Jesus was sitting with the teachers! Jesus was asking questions and listening to their answers. When Joseph & Mary found Him, they were amazed that He was calmly sitting there while they were frantically looking for Him! They asked Jesus why He had done this! Jesus answered them saying 'Why are you looking for Me? Don't you know that I would be doing God’s work? Mary & Joseph were so happy to find Jesus safe! Mary, Joseph & Jesus left Jerusalem to return home to Nazareth where Jesus continued to grow up. The students love these foldables. Print both sides, then fold as you see above. The 'doors' to the temple will open and Jesus is inside with the temple priests. This includes the color and black and white. Click here to download. The printable for this lesson is a Bible Review book. It is a great project for this lesson since Jesus was studying at the temple. If you want to use the above for handouts, this would be good to make one for the teacher to review. There are several ways to put them together, depending on how much time you have. Jesus would have been studying the Old Laws and people, so we used this to match the people to what they did in the Bible. This is a great discussion starter. Lesson: Jesus is our Firm Foundation 1. Story: Tell the story of "The Wise and Foolish Builders" based on Luke 6:47-49. Jesus liked to use a lot of stories when He taught the people. These stories are called “parables”. One day, Jesus was on a hill teaching the people about God. He told them that: no matter how good man was, he could never be good enough for God’s standards, based on his own works and efforts God loves His enemies and is kind to those who were evil If we know that only God can make us good enough, we will live right and treat others right. After teaching these things to the people, Jesus told them a parable about two men. These two men were building a house. One built his house on the rock — he dug deep to make sure he had a solid foundation. The other decided to build his house on the sand. Both houses looked nice when completed. But one day, a heavy rain came. The wind blew, the flood rose. The house on the rock got wet, but it stood firm. However, the house on the sand fell flat and was destroyed. 2. Lesson: Good News for today! How many of you saw the news and pictures of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan? This reminds us that in such storms, many things are easily destroyed. Our hope and faith cannot be on them. When we build our house on sand, we’re building on our own abilities, our intelligence, our achievements, our money ... we think that we are good enough for God. But when the storms come, we realise that whatever we have built cannot stand. But when we build our house on the rock, we are building on the sure foundation — Jesus. Jesus calls us to “come to Him and hear His words and put them into practice.” Only He is good enough for God. Only He can make us good enough for God. And when we believe and trust in Him, we can stand firm till the end. Do we want to build our life on ourselves or on Jesus? Pray: Thank you Jesus that You are our sure foundation. You have done a perfect work on the cross, and all we can do is to trust in You and not be shaken. Thank you for keeping us safe in the storm. In Your name we pray, Amen. 3. Whatever good man thought he could do on his own works and efforts, Jesus raised the standards higher, e.g. Love others à Love your enemies.Vs. 35: God loves His enemies and is kind to those who were evilVs: 43-45: If we know that only God can make us good enough, we will live right and treat others right. 3. In the parable Jesus told, what were the differences between the ways both men built their houses? What were the results that when the storm came? One man built his house on the rock — he dug deep to make sure he had a solid foundation. When the flood came, the house stood firm because it was well built.The other decided to build his house on the sand, without foundation. When the storm came, the house collapsed and was destroyed. 4. Jesus said that the man who hears His words and puts them into practice is like the one who built his house on the rock. What do you think that means? We need to build on the right foundation. We cannot build on our own abilities, intelligence, achievements, money etc and think that we can be good enough for God. Because when the storm of God’s judgment comes, what we built cannot stand.Instead, we have to build our house on the sure foundation — Jesus. Only He is good enough for God. Only He can make us good enough for God. And when we believe and trust in Him, we can stand firm till the end. 5. What foundation are you building your life on? Jesus · Pray: Thank you Jesus that You are our sure foundation. You have done a perfect work on the cross, and all we can do is to trust in You and not be shaken. We are making progress.....we are learning about Cain and Abel. We are a bit behind, due to weather. We have NEVER had to cancel services....but, a week ago we were covered in ICE. It made for extremely dangerous driving conditions. So, our elders decided it would be best to cancel services. With that being said, I feel like I am behind....but, really it is all gonna be OK. Here is our DO YOU KNOW? Wall...I feel the KIDDOS really "GET" the lesson when they are able to answer these IMPORTANT Questions. Who? What? When? Where? Where in the Bible? Why? and HOW is this IMPORTANT to ME? We have a "NEW" card on our GOD'S AWESOME PLAN FOR MAN...timeline. It is CAIN and ABEL. Our MEMORY VERSE for this Lesson is Romans 12:1. We sang it to the tune: "Oh Come All Ye, Faithful." I want the KIDDOS to understand that GOD WANTS our BEST...and we MUST GIVE HIM NO LESS!!!!!! This is the SONG for this lesson. However, while preparing this lesson, I came up with another song...we will be singing it, too!! The NEW song is sung to the tune: BINGO. Eve and Adam had a son and CAIN was his name. He was a farmer. He was a farmer. He was a farmer, he raised vegetables. Eve and Adam had a son and ABEL was his name. He was a shepherd. He was a shepherd. He was a shepherd, he cared for the sheep. The VISUALS for this lesson are very simple. My CAIN and ABEL are Fisher Price Little People. They came from their Dinosaur set...but, as soon as I saw the one with the LEAF and one with an ANIMAL BONE---I thought CAIN and ABEL. I added some vegetable (they are erasers and came from Dollar Tree) and some home made sheep from a lesson that I had taught a LOOONG time ago. The picture in the background was "self drawn." I just looked at a drawing and did my best to "mimic" it. Their TAKE HOME project is very simple.... They will color the background and add a POP UP Cain and Abel. The REVIEW GAME for this Lesson is a "MATCH" game...The KIDDOS will answer a QUESTION to get the OPPORTUNITY to turn over a set of cards....IF they match they will have to tell me if the cards go with CAIN or with ABEL. Next Sunday will be our REVIEW day...the KIDDOS will do their EXPLORER JOURNAL Activity. For this ACTIVITY they will be adding rocks to their ALTARS and then the 3D Vegetables and Sheep. The vegetables are from the DOLLHOUSE section of Hobby Lobby. The sheep are toy plastic sheep. Lesson: Jesus is able and willing to heal 1. Game: Tag Have one kid wear a hat or something distinctive. This kid has to try to tag the other children. All other children have to keep away from this kid. Once they are tagged/touched by this kid, they have to go behind the kid and hold his/her shoulders. The more children the kid touches, the longer the chain of children behind him/her. Game ends when there are 10 or 15 kids in the chain. (play by ear, according to crowd and time; avoid over rowdiness) 2. Story: Tell the story of Jesus healing the leper from Luke 5:12-16. Picture ideas #1, #2 Act it out idea: use baby powder to cover face, arms etc to depict leprosy; wipe off when "healed" Jesus went to town one day and met a man with leprosy. Who knows what leprosy is? Leprosy is a disease that affects the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes. It can cause fingers and toes to be shortened and deformed. It’s an infectious disease. In the Bible, leprosy can also refer to other infectious skin diseases. Just like the game, if you are too close to the leper, you could get infected with leprosy yourself. So nobody liked to be near a leper. If they saw a leper coming, they would go far, far away. These lepers were outcasts; they had to stay outside of town. When they come into town, they had to announce loudly, “Unclean, unclean” to warn others of their presence. Can you imagine what it’s like to live like that? This leper must have been so tired of living this way. When he saw Jesus, he forgot all the rules of staying away from other people. He fell face down to the ground and begged Jesus, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” This man must have heard of Jesus’ miracles. He knew Jesus could heal him. But was Jesus willing? Maybe he wasn’t good enough to be healed. Maybe Jesus couldn’t be bothered about someone like him. Maybe Jesus didn’t want to be contaminated by him. How do you think Jesus reacted? Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. Isn’t that amazing? Nobody wanted to be near lepers. Nobody touched him for years. And here was Jesus, touching him! Jesus could have just stood at a distance and healed the man, but He reached out and touched him, showing His love. Then Jesus said, “I am willing. Be clean!” And immediately ... the leprosy left him! Praise the Lord! 3. Lesson: Good news for today! The prophet Isaiah tells us that Jesus will “carry our sicknesses and diseases”. But even though we know Jesus can heal us, sometime we don’t think He wants to. We think that maybe He won’t heal us because we’ve been naughty or we’re not good enough. We think maybe He’s got more important things to do. We think maybe He wants us to be sick so we can learn a lesson. But the truth is that Jesus took all our sicknesses on the cross when He died. He is able to heal us. And more importantly, He is willing! He is reaching out to touch us with love and compassion! If anyone of you are sick today, put your hand on the part of the body that’s not feeling well. And pray this prayer: “Thank you Jesus that when you died on the cross, You carried all my sins and sicknesses. Thank you Jesus that you are able to heal me. Thank you Jesus that you are willing to heal me. In Jesus’ name, I receive my healing. Amen!” Memory Verse: “He carried our sicknesses and our diseases.” Isaiah 53:4.or “Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Mark 1:41 4. Activity Ideas: a. Craft: Materials: Notecards and band aids Have the kids sit in 3 small groups. On one side of the notecard: Stick 2 band aids on it as a cross and write the memory verse on the card. On the other side of the notecard: Write a prayer of thanks for Jesus’ healing for themselves or other people. “Thank you Jesus for healing me of _________” or “Thank you Jesus for healing my mummy of ___________” Pray together with each kid. Assure kids that Jesus is able and willing to heal them all the time! ***** Youth Bible Study Leader's Guide Jesus is able and willing to heal Read Luke 5:12-16. 1. Who did Jesus meet in the village? A man covered with leprosy. 2. What is leprosy? Leprosy was a dreaded and infectious skin disease that leads to physical disfigurement due to loss of sensation at the nerve receptors (they cannot feel pain) and degeneration of tissue. 3. How were people with leprosy treated? (cref Lev 13:45-46) According to the Law, people with leprosy were considered “unclean” and shunned. They had to live apart from their family, outside the town, and shout “unclean” when in the presence of others. In the Old Testament, leprosy was a sign of God’s judgement and a consequence of sin. When Jesus came, He demonstrated God’s grace and compassion by showing love and healing to lepers. 4. What did the man do when he saw Jesus? Why do you think he said that? He fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” He probably heard of the miracles Jesus had been performing and knew He was able to heal him. But he wasn’t sure if Jesus was willing to or not. Maybe he wasn’t good enough to be healed. Maybe Jesus couldn’t be bothered about someone like him. Maybe Jesus didn’t want to be contaminated by him. Maybe Jesus thought he deserved to have leprosy. 5. How did Jesus respond? Why do you think He did what He did? What did Jesus tell the man to do next? Jesus told the man not to tell anyone about the miracle but to go show himself to the priest and offer the sacrifices as a testimony to them. This was so the man could be reconciled back to his family and society. 7. Still the news got out, and people flocked to Jesus who was still willing to heal them of their sicknesses. But where would Jesus often go to and why? He would withdraw to lonely places to pray. He knew that all good things came from God. He could only give what He had received from God, not from His own strength. So Jesus loved to spend time with His heavenly Father and receive from Him. Likewise, whatever we do or give, it has to come from the overflow of our lives, not from our own selves or strength. So before we serve or minister, we should spend time with God and receive from Him. Then it will overflow from our lives to others around us.
