Thank you Vanity Fair! I was looking for a way to make a bunch of Safari hats on the cheap, and paper plates were the answer. I traced the shape of the bowl onto the plate and cut the hole slightly smaller, hot glued them together and Wa-La . add a little spray paint and some jute twine. FYI buy the jute twine in the section of Walmart where they sell rope , it is alot cheaper than what you buy in the craft section and is just as good.
The Scuba Curriculum is rich with engaging lessons and activities that keep the kids active and involved in each station. However, one size does not always fit all when it comes to VBS! Sometimes a…
I'm not sure how many people get into set building for VBS, but I guess I do. This year, our journey was set for Biblical Athens where we would learn about the Apostle Paul's dangerous missionary journey to share the truth found in Christ Jesus. Coming off my first year working with VBS, I was a little more prepared. Although, I've learned a lot in the midst of my 2nd year. I wanted to share with you some of the things we have done to make our VBS experiencially (new word?) enhanced. First thing the vbs kids do is register and then head down to the fellowship hall for snacks. This is where the marketplace is found and also where the daily dramas take place shortly before Opening Celebration time. Then, as a small group (Oikos tribe named after different stops on Paul's journey), one heads up the stairs and is welcomed by a pilot who briefly conveys to the participants that we are going somewhere by airplane. Then they turn left into the church entryway and walk through part of last years set from Babylon. The lessons of the day are being posted on the wall to remind them of what they are learning about. Once they enter the church sanctuary the see this. The Parthenon, or at least or rendition of it. Made from 1.5" 4x8' rigid foam insulation, this wonder of the world, or at least our congregation stands 12.5 feet tall. Behind this building is Paul's tentmaking house where kids experience Paul's Adventures. We used this set during Sunday morning worship and our portable altar was utilized. This is a side view of Paul's Tent Making House. This is a poor picture of 2 out of 5 our our memory makers made from labels and stock wood from a church craftsman. He made 78 sets!!! This is our God Sightings Wall that looks a lot like Babylon 2012. Ha! Entrance to the marketplace in fellowship hall. This is a master list of registrants on a white board that helps us track Oikos tribes (Small Groups)
Part of the lesson on camouflage is for students to "hide" their creature. I let them choose from butterflies to zebras. I use scrapbook paper or sometimes old wallpaper books. We staple them on our classroom walls for a few weeks, then place them in our science journals. These are 2 examples.
We have had some circus fun lately and I wanted to share this super cute, super easy circus tent craft that we made! I got idea for the circus tent from First Palette. The site

Last week, I took Thursday and Friday off of work. Emily spent the night Wednesday through Friday night, and I took her to the last two days of our church's Vacation Bible School program. Turns out Thursday was "dress as your favorite animal day" at VBS. When we found this out (on Wednesday night), Emily said, "Katrina, How are we going to make me look like a hedgehog? (or a unicorn?). Hmmm. Good question. I made a few feeble attempts at the aforementioned animals. Then, after a quick trip to Michael's (craft store), we decided to go with "the animal Aunt Katrina is most likely to come up with a costume for on short notice." We found a cute leopard headband (complete with matching tail), added a brown T-shirt, and some whiskers and, voila, animal costume. Our church used Answers in Genesis' curriculum. This year the theme was called "IncrediWorld". I talked Greg and Emily into posing behind this roller coaster cut out, and they humored me. Friday was Greg's birthday. So, after VBS, Emily and I went home and made him his favorite meal and a chocolate cake. (Happy Birthday, Greg!)
