There's nothing better than binding off your patterns and admiring a finished project that looks polished and professional. One of the best ways to step up your knitting game and make your knits look a little cleaner is to use a selvedge edge! There are various styles of edging that you can use in knitting, but some of the most popular are slip stitch selvedge edges. Essentially all that this means is that there is a staggered slip stitch along both sides of the knitting that makes the sides of your fabric look a little neater. This is also helpful if you plan to pick up stitches along the edge of your fabric at a later time to join another piece of knitting. Below, we've outlined the five most common styles of selvedge edges and given you the steps to incorporate them yourself. And the best part is that you can add them to just about any knitting pattern imaginable! Try them all and see which one feels the most natural to you!
Now that I have my new tablet weaving loom, I'm more mobile and can weave outside, enjoying the sun. I tried a pattern from Finland in wool. It turned out very nice :) Schließlich hatte ich dann ca. 4,20m Borte :) In the end I had about 4,20m. Also schnell das nächste Projekt aufgeschärt. Ich liebe ja die tollen broschierten Borten aus Birka. Ich habe mir auch vor einiger Zeit dafür sehr dünnes Wollgarn und Metallicfaden besorgt. Then I went on with another project. I love the brocaded bands from the viking age settlement at Birka, Sweden. Some time ago I bought some very thin wool yarn and metallic thread to make those bands. Geijer, Agnes. Die Textilfunde aus den Gräbern, Vol. III of Birka: Untersuchungen und Studien. Uppsala: Kungl. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akadamien (1938). Pp. 83, fig. 20. Ich habe mich für das Muster vom Band B20 entschieden, in blauer Wolle und Goldfaden. I decided to weave the B20 pattern in blue wool and golden thread. Hier kann man gut sehen, wie dünn die Wolle ist. Da geht das Weben zwar relativ langsam voran, es sieht aber einfach gut aus. Here you can see, how thin the yarn actually is. This makes the weaving process quite slow, but the pattern turns out very nice.
I’m a sucker for the British period drama Call The Midwife. The show has its corny moments admittedly, but it’s fascinating to watch how pregnant women, midwives and nuns living in the poor East End of London during the 1950s dealt with safe childbirth in the era before epidurals, C-sections or even adequate sanitary conditions. So when I saw these fabric wombs dated around 1760 I was immediately transfixed and interested. Pioneering midwife Angélique Marguerite Le Boursier du Coudray created the fabric wombs as a teaching tool: In 1759 the king commissioned her to teach midwifery to rural women to reduce infant mortality. Between 1760 to 1783, she traveled rural France, sharing her knowledge with women. During this time, she is estimated to have directly trained 4,000 students. Du Coudray invented the first lifesize obstetrical mannequin, called “The Machine.” Various strings and straps serve to simulate the process of childbirth. The head of the infant mannequin has a shaped nose, stitched ears, hair drawn with ink, and an open mouth, with tongue. While they’re semi-creepy to look at, I’m sure they saved a lot of lives. When I searched for Drawn-Thread techniques for making a fringed hem, I didn't quite find what I wanted. So after practicing various other techniques so that I got the idea down, I figured out a set of stitches to get a pretty fringed hem, using the threads from the fabric itself (rather than sewing on a separate fringe). I made a rather pretty apron with it! More about this on my site: www.morgandonner.com/2013/09/apron-largesse/
Nalbindning, nålbinding Over the past several weeks, I have been studying how to do nalbinding and the various stitches. I found it all a bit confusing at first
