These digital Presidents Day activities about US Presidents are easy to use as traditional classroom lesson plans, centers, homework, independent work, or they’re great for fast finishers in first and second grades. Busy teachers love these low-prep lessons and activities that are sure to engage their students! With print & digital options, Learning Quests provide a balance of face to face and device-based learning styles for your modern classroom. Why do teachers and students love our Learning Quests? We all know kids LOVE technology, so why not blend their passion with learning? Take your Presidents Day lesson plan to the 21st century with these Learning Quests. Learning Quests provide an easy format to help teachers utilize 1:1 devices in their classrooms. Plus, kids love Learning Quests and will beg for more! What is a Learning Quest? Students use a device to listen to and read a text, complete interactive digital educational activities, watch a video, write about their learning, and take a short quiz. How to use a Learning Quest during Whole Group Instruction The teacher projects the Learning Quest activities while students follow along on their devices. First, the class completes the focus activity and makes predictions. Next, teachers can either project the text and read it together as a class, or students can listen/read on their own devices. While reading, students can digitally highlight key ideas on their devices, while taking notes with paper and pencil. Then, students demonstrate their understanding about the topic by completing the various interactive digital activities on their own devices. This can be done together as a class, or students can complete them independently during the lesson or throughout the week. After students are done engaging with the digital version (and because all Learning Quest materials are also printable) students can write about what they learned with paper and pencil. Finally, to check for understanding, students take a short quiz. How to use a Learning Quest as Independent Work Learning Quests can also be completed independently with student devices. We also provide a printable independent work packet option if students don’t have a digital device or if teachers want students to work through some (or all) of the activities on paper. This is a great option for fast finishers, center work, self-paced learning, or enrichment activities. Watch our short YouTube video to see a Learning Quest in action, or check out the video preview. Here's the DIGITAL resources you'll get: Focus activity Informational texts with pre-recorded audio that can read aloud to students Note-taking sheets to record learning from the texts Variety of interactive learning activities with moveable pieces Links to video clip (videos linked to YouTube) Writing response pages Quizzes for each topic Here's the PRINTABLE resources you'll get: Focus activity Informational texts Note-taking sheets to record learning from the texts Variety of interactive learning activities (cut & paste, etc.) QR codes to video clip (videos linked to YouTube) Writing response pages Quizzes for each topic Compatible digital platforms include: Google Slides, Seesaw, and Easel by TPT Also Included: A self-grading quiz compatible with Google Forms Back-up mp3 audio files and instructions for use * A note about pre-recorded audio: The pre-recorded audio is already embedded in the digital platforms which allows students to have the text read to them. Some districts block audio files they do not own, meaning the audio may not play for your students on the Google Slides platform. In this case, we have no way to alter your district’s settings. As a possible work around, we include a link to access back-up mp3 files and instructions for manually inserting the audio into Google slides. While audio enhances the student’s experience in the digital learning quest, students can complete the activities without it. As another note, the pre-recorded audio provided in the Seesaw and Lumio platforms do not have the same playback issues. Please take this into consideration before making your purchase. Poetry. Love. February. Valentine’s Day. Teenagers. An interesting mix, wouldn’t you say? If you teach high school students in February, all of these collide right around the middle of the month. Most students I teach know all about the holiday, but some are (recently) single, indifferent, hurting, or even jaded, so mushy love poems are not for them. The five poems that I’ve collected here

Fun STEM Activities for Elementary Students on Valentine's Day Candy Heart STEM That is Easy to Implement This is the third installment of the "Pick the Path STEMventure" series. I wrote a short story about Cupid for Valentine's Day. Don't worry, there's no lovey-dovey stuff. In the story, Cupid is helping kids and animals work through some quarrels. Each choice leads to a STEM challenge, so that in completing the story students will complete 3-4 challenges. The story not only guides them through the engineering design process, it includes design constraints and areas for them to fill in their thoughts, plans, and testing data. One Challenge All Students Complete - Unplugged Coding Not all kids love coding, but it is still great to expose them to simple logic problems that are the basis of coding. Creating a path is a simple way to have kids think ahead and plan out a set of directions - this can be useful in many other non-coding areas, such as cooking, following a map, or even executing a detailed set of drills at soccer practice! The story is set up in such a way that all students will walk through this particular challenge, though the other challenges presented are up to the student. The other challenges include: a candy heart tower a candy heart maze a container that holds candy hearts a parachute for Cupid a bow for Cupid (optional, for any class that has a serious case of shoot-your-eye-out-itis) You can do the challenges above (aside from the coding one) without the resource I created. Here are some examples of the others, including STEM activities with conversation hearts: Other ideas for Candy Heart STEM Create a pattern with the hearts and have someone else decipher it. Is it by color? By saying? Something else? Create a candy heart launcher! Set up an experiment to try and figure out the fastest way to dissolve candy hearts. Is it with cold water? Warm water? Water with baking soda in it? Milk (if no allergies)? Something else? Get ideas from students and see if they have any creative solutions to try! Friday was our 100th day of school (and as Femster pointed out, only 80 more to go!). The students were allowed to dress like they are 100 years old, and the little guy below outdid himself! Honestly, this getup kind of unnerved me! Then, there were the teachers who got in on the act... I can see these two shaking up the old folks' home already! This week, I'm looking forward to celebrating Valentine's Day in a low key way. We didn't invite parents, which always reduces the stress and chaos. The kids made their Valentine's Day bags on Friday afternoon, and they look so stinkin' cute, (thanks to Cheri fonts, red lunch bags from Target, and heart foam stickers)! I'll have to take a pic. I plan to have my kiddos complete A Cupcake for the Teacher's "Love Is..." writing activity. Her ideas are so adorable! Friday is an early dismissal day, and as tedious as professional development meetings can sometimes be, I'm excited to have the chance to sit down for a few hours! And, of course, I am super pumped for a three-day weekend. Who isn't? Princess A and Deedle were up early on Saturday morning, playing quietly (which always makes me suspicious). When I checked on them, I found that they had plastered their bedroom doors with "Keep Out!" signs. The irony was that they were helping each other make the signs! Princess A's creation: "Keep Out. Alice. No JD." I ran today for the first time in almost three weeks in an effort to shed the funk I've been in lately. The run, a hot shower, and a quick nap helped. I ran five miles (the longest I've ever run!), and I thought I was going to die toward the end! It felt so good, though, to get some "me" time and some exercise. I am going to try to make running a priority again, like I did during the warmer months, and I'd like to get at least one mid-week run in so I'll be ready to run the 5K (or even 10K) in St. Michaels in May (SpurDog? Femster? Poodle? Are you with me?). I am counting the days until the time change kicks in!
