Time to share a few of my vintage Valentine hankies and show how I use them for decoration. These were popular in the 40’s and 50’s and you can still find them on Ebay, and in vintage stores if you look carefully. They are often buried in baskets and boxes of linens at thrift stores and antique ma
⭐️Stardog Puzzle Purse!💫 by e.k.mosley (Letter or Valentine) Origami This was my first time making a puzzle purse and I had so much fun painting each little picture on all the hidden folds. These beautiful little paper creations can be dated back to Japanese paper folding techniques called tatogami and origami from Japan’s Heian era (782-1185 CE). In Japan they were called Tato and used to hold small objects like buttons, stamps, needles, thread and other small bits and bobs. But when they started coming over to the west, people began drawing pictures on them and using them to write secret messages and love letters. The Victorian’s called them Puzzle Purses and were particularly fond of gifting them on Valentine’s Day. Today puzzle purses remain a fun way to send a magical letter to friends, family and loved one all year round, for all sorts of holidays and special occasions. I hope you enjoy folding your own Stardog Puzzle Purse to keep little treasures in. • Photos are of the original handprinted puzzle purse and the front and back of the digital files • Format - pdf download (and jpgs of front and back) • Pdf can be printed as many times as you wish and on any paper you like. It will print and fold well on standard printer paper but can also be printed on to heavier art papers (250gsm-300gsm) • Print either double sided or as two sheets and stick back to back. • To fold please look up instructions on how to fold a victorian puzzle purse. Our Love Day ahhh Valentine's Day has come and gone just like that. We had quite the festive week filled with heart shaped foods, flowers galore, and endless kisses. Solis loved her heart shaped grilled cheese sandwiches. But I think she liked her straw even more. {red shirt} {red bow} Solis's card and my card to our #1 guy. So appropriate in each situation. I bought my card from emilymcdowell.com Solis made the cutest valentine for her daddy! My husband thinks nuts > chocolate. Crazy, I know. So I made him some trail mix, popped it in a mason jar, and printed off this cute printable. In the mix I included dried cranberries, peanuts, almonds, cashews, chocolate chips, and m&m's. He (and his nut loving daughter) polished it off in one day. I also made this uh-mazing dessert. The crust is a combination of granola bars, brown sugar, and butter. That alone was so so delicious. The middle consists of cream cheese, heavy cream, and strawberries. I got the recipe from this website and modified just slightly. It says to keep the dessert frozen but it was so frozen we didn't enjoy it so we popped it in the fridge and it was much better. Ingredients 1 box Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bars (Oats 'n Honey), there will be 12 individual bars total 1/3 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup flour 6 TB melted butter 2 egg whites 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup heavy whipping cream lemon juice 4 ounces cream cheese 2 cups chopped strawberries Directions 1. Put the Nature Valley granola bars in a food processor and process until you achieve a course crumb. 2. In a large bowl, add the crumbs, brown sugar, flour and melted butter and mix together. 3. Spread into an 8x8 pan that has been covered with parchment paper. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Let cool. Then divide in half and set aside. 4. In a mixing bowl, combine eggs whites and sugar and mix on high. Add the heavy cream and continue mixing for another five minutes. 5. Continue to add lemon juice (more or less depending on your liking) and softened cream cheese. Mix on low speed until incorporated. 6. Fold the fresh strawberries into the cream mixture. 7. In a buttered glass cake pan, press half of the crumb crust mixture on the bottom. Top with strawberry mix and then add the remaining crumbs to the top. 8. Cover and freeze until hard. Then we put in the fridge or keep it in the fridge if you want more of a frozen dessert. Have fun making your tummy happy! Another Valentine/winter activity we did was pink snow! We were all snowed in with piles twice as big as Solis so we brought the snow inside. An excuse to wear her cute snow boots and pink ruffle swimsuit? I'm dying of cuteness. Happy Valentine's Day from Solis! XOXO

Here's a fun craft I will be doing with my evening Storytime kid's in a couple weeks. It's great for Valentine's Day and it uses some old puzzle pieces I saved years ago. With a little prep work this craft can be done in a short amount of time. What you will need: Popsicle sticks (12 each) Puzzle pieces Cardstock cut into hearts (about 3" big) Ribbon Paint Hot glue gun School glue Ribbon Permanent marker I made the popsicle frame ahead of time using hot glue. This is also a good time to add a piece of ribbon to the back of the frame for hanging. Hint: Glue the puzzle pieces onto the heart and paint them before gluing to the frame. My first attempt above was glued to the frame before I painted it. It was a disaster. Use school glue to attach the puzzle pieces on the heart and then paint them. Once the painted heart is dry (I will be reading a story during this time) use the glue to attach it to the front of the frame. With a permanent marker write: "Love You To Pieces". I'm going to let the kids write it out on their own-it will look so much better than mine! Enjoy!
Have you seen that commercial from Allstate? The one with the male (supposedly) French model she met on the Internet? My seven year old has been walking around the house saying “bonjour” thanks to this little marketing spot. To springboard off his new found interest in foreign languages, I made him a series of four heart-shaped puzzles. Each heart contains three pieces: the shape of a country, that country’s flag, and the way you say “I love you” in the language spoken there. Download a free 2-page PDF of these puzzles here. I printed the puzzles on cardstock, spray glued them to craft foam and cut them out. Then I jumbled them all together so my son had to really work to put them together. He referred to his Reader’s Digest Children’s Atlas (which has each country’s flag in the back) for help. While this wasn’t an extensive foreign language lesson, it was fun to exchange I love yous with my son in a language other than English!

A fun, easy Valentine craft for you and the kids! Have you seen a "Victorian puzzle purse" before? View all of the photos above to see how it opens from a 2.75 square to an 8" page. My version is perfect to use as a unique Valentine's Day card. Or it can be party favor that will start a conversation. Makes a great last minute valentine when all you have is a color printer and regular computer paper at home. If you don't have a printer, take the files to a print shop (like Staples, Office Max, Office Depot) or ask to use your friend's printer. ( Give yourself time to practice the folding before doing your final cards. I give your links to watch how-to fold videos to make things easier) Simply print the puzzle out using your inkjet printer, then follow my directions for EASY origami folding, assembly, and decoration. Even kids can do it. HERE IS HOW IT WORKS: The recipient opens it, then follows the numbers in order to read the poem that is scattered on the front and back of the page. This particular puzzle has a love poem on it. The message inside says: "Love is in the air on Valentine's Day. Have yourself a happy one." WHAT IS INCLUDED: You will receive two versions of this two sided puzzle. One has the splattered background shown in the photos here. It looks like an antique. The other version has no background. Use this version if you have a lot of puzzles to print and need to save ink. Or use it if you want to use a cream or bright white paper for a more contemporary look. How-to PDF included. Also included are various matching gift tags (not shown) plus the cupid and heart images to attach to the optional bow. There are also mini envelopes that fit into this puzzle purse so you can insert a tiny treasure, such as a teabag or small flat candy. Here is the listing... https://www.etsy.com/listing/176476744/instant-download-bird-and-heart-mini?ref=shop_home_active_6 SIZE: Open size: 8" square, Folded size: 2.5" square The digital files are 8.5" x 11" and print out to standard size computer paper. Customers who used an A4 printer were able to print their files out fine, but the size was different from the American size. DESIGN INSPIRATION: I referred to real antique puzzle purses for my inspiration. Most of them were done in the Penn. German fraktur style. The whimsical design I created here was made using charming antique woodcut images from circa 16th century... a couple holding a heart, cupid, birds, butterflies, a horse, flowers. CUSTOMER REVIEW: OMG! This puzzle purse is amazing! Luv, luv, luv the graphics! Took a bit to figure out how to fold but now that I know how it's fabulous ;-D Many thanx for the Youtube directions! ---Linda on Feb 9, 2021 BUYER NOTES: Give yourself some practice time using scrap computer paper before doing your final cards. Digitals are not returnable, but I will help you with your questions, of course. See my policies before purchase. Printing tips there, too. For PERSONAL USE ONLY.
