In 2001, Senator Orrin Hatch (Utah) introduced a resolution to Congress that designated October as Family History Month. I have been blessed with the opportunity to mentor a student teacher this semester which is giving me some time to really look at the Utah core and make sure that I am teaching what I should. I am embarrassed to admit that I have missed the boat on explicitly teaching any Utah symbols. I always mentioned them when we talked about US symbols, but that isn't good enough. I quickly discovered there isn't a lot of ready made materials so specific for our state (I even begged info from our 4th grade teachers!). So, I spent a good part of my "free" time working on putting together something that I thought I would share. I created a smart notebook file that looks at the symbols on the Utah state flag. Then to go along with that file I created a "coloring" book for the kids to create a book of their own state symbols. I still have some tweaking to do on the smart notebook file, but I am willing to share it just send me an email and I will send it on. You're looking east on 3300 South under the railroad bridge west of I-15. Look at that old-style railroad bridge! That bridge was replaced in 1971 (a few months after this photo was taken). This photo is from one of 145 boxes I've been perusing at the State Archives in downtown. These photos come from the Utah Department of Transportation, and were taken mostly by Cal Briggs or Gerald E. Peterson. The photos are sorted by year (with the exception of the first several boxes), and span from 1965 to 1997. Most are black-and-white negatives, though one can find prints here and there, as well as color slides. I have to hand it to the staff over there—without them, none of these photos would be on Flickr and they'd be sitting in some box for ages. My sincerest thanks goes out to them.
