Konečně k nám zavítalo jaro, tedy pokud to opět nebude rovnou léto, a s ním spousta barev. Jaro je moje neoblíbenější roční období. Když se začínají zelenat listy, které mají na jaře krásnou, šťavnatě zelenou barvu. Když se objevují první květy na stromech a vzápětí zaplaví celý strom. Bílé květy na třešních, narůžovělé na jabloních, jiné čistě bílé na hrušních, do toho záplava žlutých pampelišek v zelené trávě, prostě pastva pro oči a radost pro duši. Další roční období, které mám ráda, je podzim. Pro někoho možná nepochopitelné, ale opět ve mně vzbuzuje nadšení záplava barev, na podzim ovšem v jiných tónech. Když jsem to tu tak rozepsala, tak zjišťuji, že oblíbenost těchto dvou ročních období nejspíše vychází právě z jejich barevnosti. Barevnost, která se objevila všude kolem nás, mě inspirovala k vytvoření čtyř prostírek. Základem je bílá látka, vzor vznikl volným quiltováním a každý je jiný a lemování je z mých ručně barvených látek. Nejdříve jsem chtěla decentně přiřadit lemování ve stejné barvě, jako je prošití, pak jsem ale naznala, že je to nuda. Tak jsem barvy trochu pomíchala a hned je prostírání i svět veselejší. Nebudu tvrdit, že to bylo prošité raz dva, protože bych lhala. Byla to zdlouhavá práce, hlavně když jsem si vymýšlela čím dál plnější vzory. A určitě si všimnete, že i když je každý vzor jiný, v každém je společný prvek. Hezký večer Jana
Last week I had the best time at the Cabin Fever 2 retreat. It's the perfect event for me: A four-day bring-your-own-projects focus with little make-and-take demos each day in a stunningly beautiful luxury mountain cabin with no cell reception and hardly any wifi. . . Lots of work gets accomplished, I'm telling you! How could we not love sewing it up at a location like this?? (stock photo from their rental site here:) I don't have many photos, as I was MADLY SEWING on something that you won't see for some time. But the first thing I did was zip together the blocks for my "Boomerang" quilt. The pattern is by Emily of Crazy Old Ladies, and as she's one of the retreat organizers, she was on hand to help hold it up for the photo. Awesomeness :D The blocks had been made a good year ago, so I was excited to have the perfect excuse to pull them out even though this project was not on the current priority list. It didn't take too long to finish up, and then I hit the project that has true urgency right now. During the two and a half retreat days that I dedicated to Top Secret, I nibbled away on my adorable cookie, made this pocketed mug mat to keep my mug on, [There was a lot of fun swag, as well, from sponsors - coupons, I won a notions pouch and charm packs, and that orange baggy has the other two make-and-takes that I look forward to finishing during TV time: a new approach for a paper-pieced pin cushion, and a golf-tee based bobbin/thread connector.] This other charm pack from swag was off playing with the Kona color card when I was snapping shots: and this adorable clutch that Shannon prepped (SHOWER CURTAIN GROMMET for an inexpensive yet super cute closure!!! genius!): and marveled at the creativity of folks who brought some fantastic gifts they'd made for everyone. I mean, check out this pin cushion below that Cheryl made for everyone! The weight of the wood frame base is wonderful when you want to move between your machine and a sofa for detailed pinning work. And this thread catcher! Too clever!!! Seriously. (I need to find out who made these so I can credit her.) They use a mini embroidery hoop inside the top rim and a circle of wood(?) at the base, and stand up like this with NO interfacing - - Until you want to pack things up, they twist and nestle into themselves so they take up hardly any space at all in your notions shoebox! April even made these fun night masks for her roommies!: Sometimes when I was up to do some pressing, I went "dumpster diving" in the trash cans near me to pull out scraps folks didn't want. I intend to start working on an Omigosh type quilt in a few months, so anything you can cut a square inch out of works. Patti was so amused at that concept, that she sent me box after she got home - I was expecting jumbled scraps, but it was full of charm and crumb packs she won't use! What fun! :D And after I finished all the work on Top Secret that I could do there, I snuck in some time on the last half day to start my Leaded Glass project. I only managed this much: The pieces for this had been laid out at home before I left, and my two older daughters helped shift things around until we thought it worked nicely. The gathering up involved some meticulous organization, so instead of shelving this when I got home, it went straight to the work area. I've just finished putting it together today, so my work area is once again free for Top Secret and my cover projects. Isn't this pretty? It's a Tracey Jacobsen design that I tweaked just a smidge. I may or may not take the outer edges back off. I kind of liked it without the white border and lobes. Or maybe I'll border it in dark blue like the pool table's color. . . As the name suggests, this mini quilt is all about squares. A very simple and quick step-by-step tutorial on how to sew your very own mini with tiny squares of your most favourite fabrics. This pattern does not require high level sewing skills and is suitable even for a beginner. Being a very symmetrical person, I really like the perfect match of all the squares and the stitches in this pattern and the ease with which you can connect all the squares together. OK, let's get started! Things you need: Pretty fabric scraps Linen for the front A piece of batting Fabric for the back Quilting threads Sewing accessories Cutting Instructions: 9 squares - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" pretty cottons 6 rectangles - 2 1/2" x 1 1/4" linen 4 long strips - 7 3/4" x 1 1/4" linen 2 long strips - 9" x 1 1/4" linen 1 square - 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" piece of batting (not pictured) 1 square - 9" x 9" piece of backing fabric (not pictured) Assembly Step 1: Starch the pieces of cotton and linen before cutting. It will make it easier to cut the pieces of the right size and sew them together. Cut all the fabrics according to the instructions. Please note that in the photo below I have two extra square pieces of linen (in the bottom right corner) for a small label that I am going to write a tutorial for some time later. Step 2: Arrange the 9 squares of pretty cottons and the 6 rectangular pieces of linen in three rows. Once you are happy with the layout of your mini, start sewing the pieces together. Step 3: Sew together the squares and rectangles in the first top row (#1). Press seams with a hot iron towards the cotton fabric. Repeat for the rows #2 and #3. Step 4: Sew the four long strips starting at the top of the first row. Once you sew the strips to the top and the bottom of the first row, place markings for the next row to match the vertical seams of the top and middle rows. Pin the pieces together and stitch. Repeat the same steps for the bottom row. Step 5: Press the seams open with a hot iron and trim the excess fabric along the sides. Step 6: Sew the two long strips on the right and left sides. Press the seams open. The finished top should be 9" x 9". Step 7: Place a piece of batting on the table, top it with the backing fabric facing the right side up and then top it with the front panel facing the right side down. Pin together. Mark an opening (about 2.5") for turning the mini the right side out on the right side. Stitch all the way around remembering to backstitch at the beginning and the end of the seam. Note: You might want to use just a touch of fabric glue between the batting piece and the back fabric to keep in place. Step 8: Trim the corners and carefully turn the quilt the right side out making sure to gently push the corners out. Step 9: Using a slip stitch and a very fine needle, sew the opening closed. Step 10: Now is the fun part. Choose the quilting thread you like for your mini. Mark the lines all around the quilt and between the squares right in the middle of each linen strip. Hand quilt it and you are done! Oh I love when I get to tell you about something that's been in the works for a long time. Keeping secrets from you is hard, ya know. Last summer, the good folks at American Patchwork & Quilting magazine chose me to be one of the contributors in their newest special edition quilt magazine featuring nothing but mini quilts! I've hardly been able to wait to get my copy and see all the quilt projects in this jam packed issue. The wait is over!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really like scarves. I especially like the light airy scarves of sheer fabrics. I have outside duty for about 45 minutes during our noon break and the wind can be brutal. So when our winter turns freezing cold, I'll take a nice heavy scarf with enough length and width to cover my head and my shoulders. While I have never found scarves for this price, I do have a nice collection. That doesn't mean that I've stopped looking, though. So with good humor, I thought I'd curate a pretty grouping of scarves to inspire a pretty grouping of quilts. Quilts Happy Quilting,
Finally! We have a patriotic runner! (edit: pattern now available in my shop here) Every year in late June I get a hankering to sew with red, white and blue, but it never seems to happen for one reason or the other. This year I made up my mind it was going to happen. With a specific charm pack in mind I sat down one evening in June and started playing in EQ. In a couple days I had a design. So excited! Ready to start cutting and stitching. Then along comes my husband (I think I need to ban him from pinterest; I have enough inspiration : ) - "Hey, honey, look at this quilt. It's kinda cool. Could you make something like this?" Really?!?! Can I make something like that?!?! Is that a challenge? Of course, I can! Back to playing (aka designing) with the perfect fabric in mind. Victoria by 3 Sisters for Moda This fabric line is perfect for patriotic projects that you don't want to scream red, white and blue. The dainty prints are the cutest and perfect for so many different projects. This runner was out for the 4th and will be out for a few more weeks. I am so glad that inspiration struck my husband this time. One of the reasons I love to make and quilt is to give to others and he is my favorite person to gift. He really likes my version of his inspiration piece and that just makes me smile! Straight-line quilting for the win, but for this runner I mixed up by quilting different directions alternating blocks. Still loving straight line quilting. Usually I do solids for bindings to keep costs down, but I for my last few quilts I have branched out. Loving this red check...and that blue dot!!
