by Charles Lachman (Author) The white-knuckled saga of a maverick captain, nine courageous sailors, and a US Navy task force who achieved the impossible on June 4, 1944--capturing Nazi submarine U-505, its crew, technology, encryption codes, and an Enigma cipher machine. Two days before D-Day--the course of World War II was forever changed. The hunters of the Atlantic Ocean had become the hunted, and US antisubmarine Task Group 22.3 seized a Nazi U-boat, its crew, and all its secrets. Led by a nine-man boarding party and Captain Daniel Gallery, "Operation Nemo" was the first seizure of an enemy warship in battle since the War of 1812, a victory that shortened the duration of the war. But at any moment, the mission could have ended in disaster. Charles Lachman tells this thrilling cat-and-mouse game through the eyes of the men on both sides of Operation Nemo--German U-boaters and American heroes like Lieutenant Albert David ("Mustang"), who led the boarding party that took control of U-505 and became the only sailor to be awarded the Medal of Honor in the Battle of the Atlantic. Three thousand American sailors participated in this extraordinary adventure; nine ordinary American men channeling extraordinary skill and bravery finished the job; and then--like everyone involved--breathed not a word of it until the war was over. In Berlin, the German Kriegsmarine assumed that U-505 had been blown to bits by depth charges, with all hands lost at sea. They were unaware that the U-boat, its Enigma machine, and its Nazi coded messages were now in American hands. They were also unaware that the 59 German sailors captured on the high seas were imprisoned in a POW camp in Ruston, Louisiana, until their release in 1946. A deeply researched, fast-paced World War II narrative for the ages, Charles Lachman's Codename Nemo traces every step of this historic pursuit on the deadly seas. This is the story of how an army of artists headed off to war and bluffed their way to victory.
Gleichschaltung was the process of making Germany into a “normalized” and “coordinated” Nazi state. The Nazi ethos entered every facet of German life, from the simple act of garbage disposal to the everyday tasks of printing and the graphic arts. As shown by this 1939 Graphics Yearbook, which was not published by a Party organization, the Nazi ethos was introduced in matter-of-fact ways. Just look at the examples of printing the regalia of the SS and SA juxtaposed with advert

Draw ing on an unprecedented range and variety of original research, Hitler's Empire sheds new light on how the Nazis designed, maintained, and lost their European dominion?and offers a chilling vision of what the world would have become had they won the war. Mark Mazower forces us to set aside timeworn opinions of the Third Reich, and instead shows how the party drew inspiration for its imperial expansion from America and Great Britain. Yet the Nazis? lack of political sophistication left them unequal to the task of ruling what their armies had conquered, despite a shocking level of cooperation from the overwhelmed countries. A work as authoritative as it is unique, Hitler's Empire is a surprising?and controversial? new appraisal of the Third Reich's rise and ultimate fall.

Overview: Students will view both secondary sources about Nazi propaganda and primary sources of Nazi propaganda and evaluate the advantages they had using different mediums (print, video, photo, newspaper, radio and music) and analyze the purpose and motives behind each medium. Keep in mind for this assignment, you will need access to the internet and audio. At least 12 student computers preferred. Students will rotate through six different stations, using the "Decoding Propaganda Worksheet" to guide their analysis of five different outlets for propaganda (books/newspapers, music, posters, movies, children's books) and the final station will walk them through analyzing different Nazi propaganda (Reason TV - United States Holocaust Museum video). You may or may not choose the "Recipe for a Holocaust" activating strategy the day before you plan to do the stations. The PPT is available as a bonus! Students will complete a short "Stop n' Think" to apply their knowledge of propaganda to today. As an extended thinking activity, students will complete the "Creating Propaganda" activity. This has been done for my formal observation and all my admin loved it! I hope you love it too. It took me a total of three (50 minute) class periods to complete all these tasks, then another half a class to discuss and go over it.

The last known Nazi collaborator living in the United States -- a 95-year-old former camp guard who played an "indispensable role" in the murders of thousands of Jews -- was deported to Germany from his New York City home early Tuesday morning, completing what the U.S. ambassador to Germany called a "difficult task."
The works, four of which are believed to have come from Cornelius Gurlitt's Munich collection (pictured), may also have been looted by the Nazi.
by Helen Studley (Author) "Possibly the most important task a survivor of the Nazi horrors can face is also the hardest: To write a memoir that causes later generations not to look away but to know and feel the truth of what happened to one person. Helen Studley has done all that. Her memoir is transfixing." - Peter Hellman, Author I read The Winter's Journey of My Youth with great personal and professional interest. I found it to be a gripping, yet ultimately uplifting and inspiring account of survival by an adolescent girl caught in the maelstrom of the Holocaust. The narrative about the ordeals of hiding in Berlin and then, after having been denounced, the unimaginable horrors encountered in Auschwitz and other camps demonstrates once again the strength of the human spirit against all odds. Randolph L. Braham Distinguished Professor/Emeritus The Graduate Center/ CUNY The Rosenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies Helen Studley's journey takes her and her father from their home in a small rural town in German to a rooming house in Berlin occupied by some remarkable people. Not being able to leave Germany, she and her father were forced to work in an ammunition factory which, for a while, protected them from the ever increasing deportation of Jews to concentration camps. Thanks to the offer of a devout Christian couple, she and her father went into hiding. While all of this was difficult for a teenager to cope with, nothing compared to the eight months she spent at various concentration camps after she was caught. Studley's book does not dwell on the horrors of the camps; rather, she hints at those horrors through selective flashbacks and a finely-nuanced, "less is more" kind of storytelling. Though there is much tragedy in the book, her voice echoes the insight, clarity, and humor that helped her survive. Number of Pages: 120 Dimensions: 0.25 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN Illustrated: Yes
A beautiful yet terrifying poster displaying a rain of bombs dropped from above. The poster was made during World War II in Denmark as the country was occupied by Nazi-Germany. In the darkest days of the occupation the "Air Defense Association" was established. The association worked together with scouts and Danish Women's Emergency Management Agency (DKB). They build protective shelters in case of bomb attacks, made emergency and evacuation plans. The scouts were also to function as ordinances and DKB as a social service with responsibility for cooking, nursing and similar tasks. This poster promotes "Air Defense Day" in order to recruit members to the association. This poster was created by the Danish illustrator Arne Ungermann (1902-1981) who is one of the greatest poster artists from Denmark. Ungermann made several iconic posters many of which is very valuable today. ------------------------------------ Artist: Arne Ungermann (signed in print) Print: Lithography Dimensions: 24.4 x 39.3 in (62 x 100 cm) Condition: Very good condition - Very light signs of handling and a few small brown spots in the center (looks like ageing or misprint) - please see pictures. Photo Source: peacelovelearning.blogspot.com As a teacher, you're bound to hear {what feels like} a million questions a day. So why not get proactive - providing ways for students to get the information they're seeking on their own {as much as possible}? Younger students can be preoccupied with time - "When are we going to lunch?", "What time is gym", "Is it time to go home yet?", etc. While the original design by Donna of Peace, Love and Learning is not a bulletin board, you could easily make it into one!! Telling Time Bulletin Board or Wall Display Donna's secret to the board - foam clocks purchased at Target. But if you can't find them {or would prefer a more do-it-yourself approach}, simply... Trace and cut large circles from foam sheets in assorted colors. Use a foam marker to script numerals around the outside edge of the foam circle or purchase number stickers to prevent smudging. Measure and cut clock hands from the foam scraps, using a single paper punch to place a hole at the end of each hand. Punch a hole in the center of each foam clock - first lacing a brass brad through the hour and minute hand cutouts, then threading the rest of the brad through the hole in the center of the clock and securing it in the back. Designate a clock for each daily event - lunch, recess, home, and "specials' like art, gym class, music, etc. - setting the clock hands to display the correct time for each and creating labels. Attach these to the wall {below the classroom clock} or to the bulletin board. If the classroom clock isn't in the vicinity of the chosen bulletin board, consider purchasing an inexpensive clock to hang on the board as well. Supplies for this bulletin board...
