Have you ever wondered how to draw 3-dimensional letters that look like solid structures? Well then your answer is to use the laws of perspective. We will show you, in an easy way, how to draw 3d letters with one point perspective. Find out how to draw these neat letters now.
I've been teaching perspective just about the same for the past ten years and sadly, I've been teaching it the way it was taught to me. Which isn't always a bad thing. Except for when it's boring and not relevant. This year, I'm trying a new perspective lesson with my 4th graders. They are going to draw a box from worm's eye view. So I had them start with some homework. They had to promise me that they would put a toy that is a rectangular prism or cube on the floor and lay on their belly and look at it. They were supposed to rotate the object so that a corner, not a flat side was the closest thing to their face. Most were very excited to brainstorm a list of things that could potentially fall into this category. I gave myself some homework as well, and set up a few photos at home to display on the board during the next class. For some reason they really love knowing that I have a daughter just about their age. They think it's funny that I borrow her toys and things for our lessons. So I knew this would be a crowd pleaser. Today we started following the steps to creating the box using two point perspective. I reminded them that they were working like an animator from the film "Toy Story" and they were drawing not what Andy would see, but the little green army men. I had them imagine what they could see. Could they see the top of the jenga blocks? (NO!) Could they see out the window? (NO!) Could they see the outlet (YES) the carpet? (YES). The jury is still out, but I felt like more of them were with me, and had a clear picture in their minds of where we were going. So, ah....homework for the win? ** Update ** Lesson plan with two demo videos now available.
Every year in my first year classes (12 year olds) I touch on the principles of perspective, at least in its one point form. We do a little art history, take a look at Masaccio and Mantegna. We mak…

I have had several emails about how to do the One point perspective paintings from this post, http://www.elementaryartfun.blogspot.com/search/label/One%20Point%20Perspective so I have written the steps for this drawing. I would suggest, the bigger paper, the better. Before you begin, be sure to show students many images to get them excited and print a variety of photos to inspire creativity! 1. Begin with the horizon line in the middle (please excuse my very crooked lines!!! pencil did not photograph well, so I had to redraw some lines with my computer mouse) 2. Draw a dot in the middle (vanishing point) and make an “X” from corner to corner (or close enough) passing through the dot 3.draw the sidewalks first from the vanishing point 4. Draw the trees starting on the bottom on the “X” all the way to the vanishing point, descending towards the middle. Tell them to draw organic shaped trees, not round Que-tip lollypop trees! Make sure the trees are straight and parallel to the side of the paper. Watch students for this before they spend 20 minutes drawing 8 beautiful but very leaning trees and have to erase all of them! 5. This is the lingo I use to teach the buildings, We all say, “One, straight out, two diagonal down, three, straight down to the ground, four straight down again, and five, bring it in along the side!” 6. When I show them the windows we start with the side with the door facing the street. The lines on the tops and bottoms of the windows ABOVE the horizon line are parallel to the top part of the “X”…….below that, when you PASS the Horizon line, the lines on the tops and bottoms of the windows are parallel to the BOTTOM part of the “X” which is now the sidewalk. The top of the door is also parallel to the sidewalk. below: RED parallel to RED and BLUE parallel to BLUE The windows on the OTHER side of the house are normal right angle squares or rectangles. 7. Now erase the “X” and the parts of the horizon line that overlap the trees and buildings 8. finish windows and add details. Some students made it into a river instead of a road. Now that the basic foundation is drawn, the possibilities for creativity are ENDLESS!! Cars, trucks, planes, restaurants, people, bridges, parades, parks, pedestrians, lights, etc, etc
You need: white drawing sheet A4 size ruler compasses markers In this lesson one point perspective is combined with an optical illusion. Place the paper horizontally. Draw a small dot on the right side of the sheet, about half way. Take a ruler and draw five lines from the dot to the left side of the sheet.Draw five lines from the dot to the top of the paper and five lines to the bottom. Use a compass to draw increasing circles around the dot until the sheet is full. Draw your name in blockletters between the lines; use the width of three blocks. Make the letters threedimensional by drawing shadows on the left sides and undersides. Colour the front of the letters. Colour the shadows with a darker colour. Colour the blocks alternately with two colours, like a checker board. You may also use one colour and leave the resting blocks white. Outline the letters with a fine marker to be sure letters will really pop out of the sheet.
