In honor of our magical friend, the dragonfly, we created these simple, sweet little crafts. Here's what you will need ~ twigs ~ beads for the eyes ~ maple keys ~ glue gun ~ glitter (if that appeals to you) I highly recommend Martha Stewart's gem stone glitter ~ it is the queen of glitter, with superb sparkle! First we collect twigs that caught our eye and held that "dragonfly quality" ; ) We had maple keys stored from the fall so we pulled them out and began... So simple ~ kids choose their sticks, maple keys, glitter and bead (eye) colors ~ I then glue gunned on the wings and beads... The girls took the glue and either edged the wings, gooped it on or painted it on...then shook on that sparkle! What started out as a quick craft soon became a world of creating entire families of dragonflies ~ complete with names and personalities. I love how children throw themselves completely into creation and imagination. These rainbow dragonflies were ready to take flight in the garden... This project was done in the earlier part of a VERY hot day. We then headed to the beach for a cool off... this fine glitter sparking unexpectedly off our skin the rest of our beach long day! Thinking we may make a mobile out of these magical creatures or perhaps save them for my envisioned christmas tree this year ~ a tree sparkling with and abundant, natural, handmade decorations. I must dedicate this post to my sister Emily who loves dragonflies and adopted her own one afternoon when we were young, naming it "sporfy". The adoration must run in the family. I love watching them at our favorite beach, as they elegantly swoop and glide, filling our space with magic. Luna recently had one land on her finger and in quiet excitement, she sat in awe for over twenty minutes watching this delicate creature perched on her. Such delicate grace... In the sparkle our our majestic friend ~ Shanti ~

Collect branches, or just one branch, from outside and use tempera paints for a collaborative art experience for kids.
I guess you could call me a tree hugger. I do love trees enough to hug them. My appreciation of trees started when I was a little girl. My mother is a painter, and she loved to paint trees. I saw the beauty of them through her eyes. Timber cutting and tree farms are common
One of my favourite projects!! It takes forever to complete but a great project for the last couple of months of school. It forces the kids to concentrate and really take their time. I posted all the detailed steps previously HERE. I teach this to my mixed grade class of grades 4 - 6. It's definitely super tricky for many of the grade 4's, especially the boys who struggle more with knotting and fine motor skills. So spend some time teaching how to tie knots. I found the lesson in this book: Kid Style Nature Crafts: 50 Terrific Things to Make With Nature's Materials. I bought this book about 20 years ago! The toughest part of this project is finding an appropriate branch. It needs to be sturdy and have a good fork in it. No floppy or overly flexibly branches! We have a wooded park near my school so I take my classes there and we go hunting for branches on the ground (dried, not fresh branches are the best). I also encourage kids to bring them from home. It takes a long time to fine the perfect branch so don't leave this until the last minute! You can paint colourful stripes on your twig first, with acrylics, for a pop of extra colour. Choose a neutral colour for the warp thread and tie it securely to one end and wrap it around the entire fork and tie it off. Then start with one colour of yarn, tie it on and add the needle. Go over under over under. When you reach the end, go back the other direction. Use a fork to tap down the yarn so you get a nice tight weave. Switch colours as needed. We weave these using plastic needles- they're perfect for this. I buy the Roylco brand "plastic lacing needles". I store my yarn according to colours in plastic bags. Some finished twigs:
