An antique German bear dating from the early part of last century. He is quite bald & he has glass eyes & inset ears. His pads are felt. His joints are all working (limbs & head). There are some areas of wear & surface dustiness to the fabric. There is still a growler in his tummy & he is a firmly stuffed bear, filled with wood-wool. He has tons of character. 49.5 cm or 19 1/2" long. Selling as a decorative item for adults. NOT suitable for babies or small children.

This is a handsome artist bear named Mac No. 1, the first of his kind, by well-known Michigan artist Janet Reeves. He stands 17" and has butterscotch mohair fur, glass eyes and a black embroidered nose. He has fully jointed legs and head. He's a growler bear, with a bellows in his tummy that makes a growling sound when you lay him down. He's smartly dressed in a removable burgundy and tan tweed coat with wooden barrel buttons and toggles. His matching tam hat with a tassel on top sits jauntily over one ear. An added plus are the tiny glasses, which were added by his first family. Mac has his original artist signed tag, stating "Bears from the big woods of Michigan. For the adult collector, not for children." Janet Reeves first created her Hug-A-Bear line in the 1980's. Ms. Reeves passed in September 2021, making this limited edition bear that much more collectible. He's in excellent, like-new condition. He was probably proudly displayed and admired from afar. He comes from a smoke free home and has no offensive odors. This is a used, vintage item. Please look closely at all photos as they are part of the description. I'm happy to answer any questions. Teddy Bear Growler (Traditional Millboard – 3 sizes) Give your teddy bear a voice by inserting a traditional millboard teddy bear growler that, when tipped, makes a noise. These growlers are made from millboard (a traditional, strong, solid, cardboard type material) and are available in three sizes (the larger the growler the deeper the voice). These traditional style growlers were originally made to represent the sound of a bear cub! . Small – diameter 42mm and height 50mm (makes a shorter, high growl) (approximately 1 3/4" x 2") . Medium – diameter 49mm and height 52mm (makes a longer, high growl) (approximately 2" x 2") . Large – diameter 60mm and height 60mm (makes a slightly longer, deeper growl) (approximately 2 1/3" x 2 1/2") Growlers can be inserted into a teddy bear’s tummy to give him or her a traditional growl when tipped. You can insert a growler into an existing teddy bear to give him ‘a voice’, replace a non-working grower in a vintage teddy bear or add it into a new teddy bear that you are creating. Sit the growler in the middle of your bear’s stuffing in it’s tummy so that the growler is sitting upright with the holes facing towards the bear’s head. Make sure it is well padded all around (so that it isn’t obvious from the outside of the bear) and ladder stitch your bear’s tummy closed.
