Romania's trovants are geological oddballs that sound like something from sci-fi.
The growing stones of Romania.
Trovants, found only in a small town in Romania, are stones that actually seem to move and grow. But are they alive?
Costesti, a small Romanian village, has some interesting and incredible stones known as trovants, which are believed to have life in them and trovants is a geological term in Romania which means cemented sand. Trovante, is not a part of any science fiction but geological phenomenon, consisting of spherical shapes of cemented sand which probably existed due to some powerful seismic activity. It is believed that the earthquake which took place around 6 million years back could have led to the creation of the first trovants. The most amazing discovery of these mysterious stones is that they grow as if they are alive after coming into contact with water from a heavy rainfall and these stones tend to grow from 6-8 millimeters to 6 -10 millimeters in size. They are compared to the famous rocks in Death Valley, California, where most of these stones even move on their own without any assistance of any kind and when they are cut, they reveal ellipsoidal and spherical rings which are similar to tree trunks. Another unique aspect of these stones is that though they vary in size, from a few millimeters to around 10 millimeters they are very much similar. Many presume that these trovants consist of stone core with an outer shell of sand and after a heavy rain, smaller stones form over the larger ones giving its name of `growing stones’, while others call them living stones which reproduce. Some believe that the trovants increase in size due to its high content of numerous mineral salts that are present under the shell and when the surface tends to gets wet, the presence of the chemicals begin to start spreading, thereby putting pressure on the sand that makes the stone to grow. However, despite great efforts being done, scientists have failed to come up with a valid logical explanation or a well documented research or experiment conducted on why these stones are having extensions similar to those of roots. These trovants behave like some unknown inorganic form of life which is amazing and mysterious though local residents did have an idea and were aware of these stones unusual properties for over 100 years but did not pay much attention to them and used these stones as building material as well as for tombstones. Presently this unique discovery remains to be a popular tourist attraction in Romania and Trovants Museum National Reserve which was inaugurated in the year 2004 is now protected by UNESCO.

These extraordinary formations have puzzled observers since the 18th century, with various theories suggesting they were dinosaur eggs, plant fossils, or even extraterrestrial pods. However, scientists have classified trovants as concretions, mounds of mineral matter embedded within rock layers. ### A Living Stone? One of the most intriguing aspects of trovants is their ability to secrete cement. After a heavy rain shower, these rocks absorb minerals from the water, triggering a pressure reaction that causes them to grow in size. Some locals even believe that trovants are living creatures due to this phenomenon. While the growth is not visible to the naked eye, researchers estimate a deposition rate of approximately 1.5 to 2 inches every 1,000 years. ### Exploring Trovants Museum National Reserve Trovants Museum National Reserve offers visitors a chance to witness these extraordinary geological formations up close.
Starting out as pebbles and growing at about two inches per millennium, the Trovant stones are unique mineral structures that mimic plant and mammal life.

Trovants couldn’t believe they are real. The mysterious living stones of Romania grow, when it rains and move from one place to another without any support. The Stones of Costesti (a small village) in Romania known as Trovants. These are type of sandstone concretion that secrete cement and can at times appear to grow as if alive. These Trovants are amazing geological phenomena consisting of stone core with an outer shell of sand. The local people have different thought and claims; these are growing stones after heavy rain, Trovants tend to appear with smooth and edgeless shapes, cylindrical, nodular, and spherical. They’ve strong believed that these are type of sandstone concretion that secrete cement and can appear to grow at times, as if they are alive. These are majestic growing rocks seems identical look to sliding rocks of Death Valley. Trovants stones have puzzled experts ever since their discovery. No one can say with definite how these stones grow, and move. The perfect spherical shaped Trovants which sometimes can be found are believed to be because of great magnitudes and durations of the paleoearthquakes. Trovants are Amazing Geological Phenomena When Mysterious Living Stones Move and Grow? Trovants is a synonym of German term “Sandsteinkonkretionen”, which means Cemented Sand. In fact these are mesmerizing living stones when cut had spherical and ellipsoidal rings alike to the ones of tree trunk. There are numerous theories on Trovants stones, as scientists are baffled by the phenomenon and some explaining the origin and strange behavior of Trovants. There were few studies about origin of these growing stones of Romania, and there are several hypotheses, some of them even fantastical. Trovants were improperly considered as “sandstone concretions”. It was found that there was no mineralogical difference between these pseudoconcretions and the surrounding sands, with no different nucleus inside them, and their cement is every so often carbonate-type. Scientists have observed odd rings which resemble those of the trees. And just like it is with the trees, the stone rings reveal the age of Trovants. That’s why many believe Trovants are an inorganic form of life. The Trovants of Romania signify diagenetic textures shiny paleodynamic conditions and correspond to precise compactions of the sandy sediments holding locally solutions accumulated in the sand. Therefore, during important seismic shocks and under the influence of the internal cohesion forces tended to spherical forms. Also, the gravitation force, seismic shocks, solution cohesion forces and the adhesion strength between the sand grains and the liquid are believed to be involved in this process. The hypothesis on the seismic origin of the Trovants is very well sustained by several laboratory experiments. According to the International Geological Congress conducted in Oslo 2008, “Trovanti” were improperly considered as “sandstone concretions”. There are various Trovants in Romania which are even diversely shaped. As far as the growth of these “living stones” is concerned, certain stones may gradually get slightly larger as the result of absorbing water, in this case, the accumulations and deposits of minerals cemented by waters rich in calcium carbonate seems to be the reason. Moreover, there was a sedimentation basin in this area some six million years ago, and the Trovants were not identical and complex aggregates of two ore more Trovants can every so often be found. Trovants stone are unusually tough to break or smash. Generally, no one touches them, so they have the chance to grow from little pebbles to enormous megaliths. There is a museum in Romania, in which the fascinating stones are on display and sold as souvenirs. Even you can plant a Trovants in your garden and wait for it to grow. The biggest Trovants grow to more than 10 meters in height. The growth of Trovants stones in Romania is believed to happen when a chemical reaction sets in between the layers of deposits and the mineral carbonates in the presence of rain water. Hence, due to interesting ‘living rocks’ that seem to grow, the site became a good tourist attraction for Romania. To protect these unusual geological creations, the “Muzeul Trovantilor” or Trovants Museum Natural Reserve is now protected by UNESCO. Furthermore “Living stones” can also be found in Russia. A huge round stones periodically pop up from the ground and start to grow in the fields of Andreevka. So, if you ever go to Romania then you must have a stop at Costesti and explore the fascinating mysterious formations that continue to amaze both Scientists and tourists alike.

Trovants are another one of nature's wonders. All they need is rain and moisture to come to life and grow and multiply. How does it work?
CER: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning Activity CER is an educational process used to help students make a claim, collect evidence, and use scientific reasoning to support their claim. CER helps students to collect their thoughts and explain how their evidence is connected to their reasoning. This activity is a great way for students to practice the CER process. Trovants are a special type of concretion referred to as “living stones” that can be found in Romania, Russia, Kazakhstan, and the Czech Republic. The stones are called “living” because they exhibit some characteristics of life. The life-like characteristics of Trovants make them a great subject for CER. Students learn about their traits and then claim whether or not they think the Trovants are living. Trovants make for a lively class discussion.
