A new study has revealed yet another way that human-induced climate change is affecting the planet. Decades of weather balloon and satellite data has shown that the Earth’s troposphere is expanding, even after natural variations are accounted for.

Acrylic painting on 16 by 20 inch canvas. Printed images are pasted on the painting in some areas. It is coated with matte gel to keep it from getting stained by food, drinks, etc. Made by John Pierson in 2020. Earth’s atmosphere has five layers: troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. In the troposphere are eight clouds. In the stratosphere are three clouds. In the mesosphere are three meteors. In the thermosphere are two auroras. Air density and gravity decrease as one goes higher in the atmosphere. Most clouds are in the troposphere. A few clouds are in the stratosphere and the mesosphere. The mesosphere is the coldest layer of the atmosphere. Most meteors burn up in the mesosphere. Outer space begins at the boundary between the mesosphere and the thermosphere. The thermosphere and the exosphere are in outer space and are black during the day and have low gravity. The thermosphere is the warmest layer of the atmosphere and contains electromagnetic energy that causes auroras. The exosphere is the highest layer of the atmosphere. The exosphere ends at a distance from Earth that is about halfway to the Moon. Earth’s interior has six layers: ocean, crust, upper mantle, lower mantle, outer core, and inner core. Temperature rises and pressure rises, the closer one gets to the inner core, which is the center of Earth. The ocean is the coldest layer and the inner core is the hottest layer. The crust is made of solid rock. The crust is gray. The upper mantle is made of mostly solid rock and molten, liquid rock called magma. If we saw the upper mantle it might look red. The lower mantle is made of solid rock. If we saw the lower mantle it might look orange. The rock in the upper mantle and the lower mantle is so hot and under so much pressure that it has an orange-red glow. The outer core is made of hot, liquid iron and nickel. If we saw the outer core it might look orange-yellow. The inner core is made of solid iron. The high pressure at the inner core keeps the iron solid. The inner core is as hot as the Sun. If we saw the inner core it might look white, and it might be as bright as the Sun. Earth’s magnetic field is created by the rotation of Earth and by the flow of liquid iron in the outer core. The flow of liquid iron creates powerful electric currents which produce the magnetic field. There are convection currents in the upper mantle and the lower mantle that transport heat from the outer core to the crust. Sometimes the currents bring magma to Earth’s surface and cause volcanic eruptions. On Earth’s surface there is an island with a volcano on it in the middle with the ocean on both sides. The volcano is erupting with red lava and gray ash coming out the top. Below the volcano is a column of red magma and a convection current. Brown soil is at the top of the crust on land. Green vegetation is above the soil. The painting comes with a printed diagram that shows where the layers are and printed text that describes the layers.

Custom Shop strat with handspun underwrapped pickups, *Ash* body (not Alder as the autogen'd specs below wrongly say), quartersawn Maple neck, Rosewood fingerboard with clay position markers. Heavy relic. It looks, sounds, and plays fantastic, one of the nicest strats I've ever played but a bit too much strat for this old dog. This guitar is essentially new, only played gently once, comes with beautiful case, all case candy and paperwork and has not yet been registered with Fender so the buyer can register it as the original owner.
Introduce or review the layers of the Earth's atmosphere with this set of foldout activity templates (16-page PDF to download and print at home or school). Designed to help students recall the 5 atmosphere layers from the troposphere to the exosphere, this hands-on resource is a great worksheet alternative. Use the finished foldouts in an interactive science notebook for students to reference. The templates There are 5 template options to choose from. -Template 1: Students color the template, match the layer names to the pictures, glue, cut, and fold. -Template 2: Students color the template, arrange 5 layers in order, glue, cut, and fold. -Template 3: Students color the template, match the layers to the pictures, arrange everything in order, glue, cut and fold. Option to use layer names or names with short descriptions. -Template 4: Students color the template, write the name (or short description) of each layer next to the pictures, cut, glue, and fold. -Template 5: Students color the template, write a description of each layer in the white space, cut, glue, and fold. This template works best used alongside a textbook or other information source for pupils to reference. What students need: -Printed templates and labels -Colored pencils -Scissors -Glue -Pen (for templates 4 and 5) Why use this activity? -Hands-on alternative to a worksheet -Template options to allow for differentiation (see above) -Use as a review, introduction, or assessment -Low-prep Is this resource editable? This PDF resource is not editable. US and UK versions of the file are included.
A sort activity using the five layers (troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere) and of the atmosphere. Students must cut out the boxes and then place them in the right categories. This is a good way to build background knowledge or check for understanding of this topic.
Photographer Paul Smith said he thinks this may be the 1st documented capture of a red sprite over Oklahoma. They're large-scale electrical discharges - high above thunderstorm clouds - flickering in the night.
